3 things to do this month 1. Keep cool When it is very hot stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. Drink cold drinks often, such as water and fruit juice. Don t have tea, coffee and alcohol. Keep your house cool by closing curtains. 2. Use sunscreen Use sunscreen that is factor 15 or more. The higher the better. Water washes off sunscreen so make sure you keep putting it on. For more advice visit 3. Be careful on holiday Remember to have safe sex at home and on holiday. Condoms protect you from infections and getting pregnant (having a baby). If you need help and advice visit Page 3

Intermediate Care Team and some of the day care staff from New Romney. Home is where the help is Our Intermediate Care Teams help people to stay independent at home. They help when you leave hospital or try to stop you having to stay in hospital. Mark Forde is 59. He is getting support from the team in New Romney. He was born with Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT). This means he feels weak. Sometimes he can t feel his arms and legs. Last year Mark started feeling worse. He thought he would have to leave his job. Page 4

He saw John, a benefits officer at Romney Marsh Day Centre. John asked him if he had ever had physiotherapy. Someone from the Intermediate Care Team visited Mark at home. They talked about the things Mark finds difficult and what help he needs. Mark said it was brilliant. He finds using stairs hard so the team showed him how to use them so he doesn t fall over. Mark has also been going to the day centre for physiotherapy. He practices his exercises at home. He also knows how to get up if he does fall over. Mark Forde. Mark said: There s nothing that can be done to cure my condition but it s good to know the team are there. I feel much more confident. It s such good support. I ve said I would be happy to pay for it! Page 5

Smokin From 90 to zero! In 2012 Roy lost his job after having some operations. He was at home all day. Because he was bored he smoked a lot. Some days he would smoke 90 cigarettes. This used to cost him 50 a week. Roy met Cathy, a stop smoking advisor at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM). Page 6

She asked him if he wanted to stop smoking. Roy said ok! Smoking was starting to affect his health. He stopped smoking and saved his money. Roy used the money to buy a motorbike. Roy with his rescue dogs, Cleo and Rico. Roy says he would never have been able to stop smoking without the help from Cathy. 75% of people who smoke want to stop 4 out of 5 people in the UK don t smoke 80% of people who smoke start before they are 20 years old Source: Action on Smoking and Health Page 7

Back from the brink Laura Werlemann is 30. She is from Gravesend. One day Laura was at work when she had a brain trauma (injury). Laura was taken to an intensive care unit. What is the Community Neurological Rehab Team? The team look after adults with disabilities like: stroke brain injury multiple sclerosis Parkinson s disease. They see patients at home to help them be independent. Your GP can refer you. Her mum, Sue, said it was very difficult. Laura stayed in hospital for a year. Page 8

In October 2012 she was ready to go home. She met Lucy Allen and Dr James Chalcroft from the Community Neurological Rehab Team. Lucy helped Laura to do small things, like walking to the shop to buy a newspaper. They went together at first. Then Laura started going on her own. Laura started volunteering to get out and about. She said this has made her more confident. Laura has done so well that Lucy is helping her to try to find a job. Laura said it will be hard to find the right job but she wants to go back to work. Page 9

She has trouble remembering things but she can manage it. Lucy says one of the reasons Laura has got better is because her parents are supportive. Laura is also very strong-minded. Lucy Allen from the team. Laura writes everything in her diary to help her remember things. She is never frightened to get her diary out and write things down. Lucy s parents, Sue and David, are really pleased the team were there to help. Sue and David said Lucy has always been there. She has been great. Page 10

You made me feel special This is a quick letter to thank Sam Timson, the lymphoedema nurse I saw. I was very pleased with her treatment. She went the extra mile. It s nice to see Sam making such a good job for herself. We first met when she was a student. I thought she would do well once she qualified. Best wishes and many thanks from a very well looked after patient. Ian Gardner-Carr, Ashford Page 11
