4 COLON CANCER 2013 STATISTICS The number of new colon cancer cases that are projected nationally:142,820 The number of deaths projected nationally: 50,830 Percentage of people in Carroll County who are screened for colon cancer is approx. 70% which is about the same as the state average We are doing well, just need to do better!!!

6 More Facts Polyps can be taken out before they can grow into cancer Some polyps can turn into colon cancer Your risk for colon cancer increases in those with a family history of colon cancer or history of polyps
7 More interesting facts: The death rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping in both men and women for more than 20 years WHY? Polyps are being found by screening and removed before they can develop into cancers Screening is also allowing more colorectal cancers to be found earlier when the disease is easier to cure In addition, treatment for colorectal cancer has improved over the last several years There are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States
8 Symptoms There may not be symptoms in the early stages of colon cancer. When the disease has progressed there may be blood in the stool, a mass or lump in the abdomen, cramps or pain in the abdomen, change in the size of the stool(may be thinner, or constipated)
9 Screening Anyone 50 years or older Anyone under 50 who has had colorectal cancer in the past, had an adenomatous polyp, inflammatory bowel disease(ulcerative colitis or Cohn's) Has a mother, father, brother, sister, or child who had colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyp before age 60 Anyone who has a family history of genetic forms of colorectal cancer or polyps
10 Types of Screenings: Fecal occult Blood Test- checks for blood in stool---even if you cannot see the blood (yearly) Sigmoidoscopy: Doctor uses a long flexible tube with a light to look at the last third of the colon (Every 5 years) Colonoscopy (most preferred) Doctor uses a long flexible tube with a light to look at the entire colon (Every 10 years) Ask your doctor what screening is best for you
11 Prevention- Nutrition Choose predominately plant-based diets rich in a variety of fruits, legumes, and minimally processed starchy staple foods Eat 5 or more servings a day of a variety of vegetables and fruits Eat a variety of grains, legumes, roots and plantains Limit refined sugar and choose minimally processed foods Limit red meat to less than 3 ounces daily
12 More on Nutrition Limit consumption of fatty foods, particularly those of animal fats Choose modest amounts of appropriate vegetable oils Limit salted foods, especially processed foods. Use herbs and spices to season foods No more than 1, mg sodium daily for average diet recommended Limit charred foods. For meat and fish eaters, avoid burning of meat juices. Only occasionally consume direct flame, and smoked meats Limit alcohol to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men
13 Exercise/Activity Adults should engage in 2hrs of moderate intensity activity each week Children and adolescents 1 hour of moderate daily exercise or vigorous intensity exercise 3 times per week Studies suggest that 5 hours of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per week helps to prevent weight gain and obesity
14 Build Exercise into Everyday Take the stairs, avoid elevators Park at a distance when you go to the mall and other places~ (CHC garage is helping us!!) Brisk 30 minute walk at lunch time Use a stationary bike or treadmill when you watch TV Simple exercises when watching TV Go dancing with your spouse or friends Plan active vacations instead of driving trips Wear a pedometer every day and increase your number of daily steps Join an exercise class
