Preparing to See the Show Things to talk about before coming to Serenbe Playhouse The Wizard of Oz is both enchanting and spectacular, but occasionally some younger children may be overwhelmed or even frightened. As well as reading the story on the next page, here are some suggestions of the kind of questions you might want to work through with your students. Questions About Expectations Questions for Your Trip to Serenbe Have you seen a live show at a theatre before? Have you been to the movies or watched a show on TV? Have you seen a play in school, or church? In some ways it s the same: Real people who are friendly and nice, are telling a story. They are dressed up, pretending to be the characters in that story. Sometimes they use costumes, wigs, or makeup to make them look like the character from the story. In this show we use large puppets to represent some characters, the puppets are controlled by people and are not real. In the theatre there are other things to help the actors, such as special lights and sound effects that come through speakers. And it s all happening live, in front of you, at the exact moment you are seeing it. Think about how the actors are getting ready. While you are travelling to the theatre, they are putting on their make-up and getting into costume. They are getting the puppets in place and making sure they work properly. What do you think the actors will need to do to become their characters? Have you ever worn a Halloween costume? What type of costume did you wear? Did you know the actors in the show wear costumes just like you did at Halloween? Some of them will need to change their hair. How might they do that? Some of them might need to change the shape of their faces. How will they do that? Some of them will use puppets, what is a puppet? What are some things you can do to help you feel brave, if you start to get scared? In order to help make the characters in Oz as non frightening as possible, please use the Character Descriptions on Page 6. We have included a photo of the characters in costume as well as the actor s head shot to show the difference. 2 Serenbe Playhouse Academy
Why not read this aloud at story time, in preparation before, or as a reminder after, seeing the show? This would be a good time to discuss potential scary characters such as the Wicked Witch and the Wizard of Oz. Synopsis of Oz About the Show It also doubles as a synopsis for secondary students to utilize as a reading resource. You may also utilize this synopsis as a basis for the Retelling A Story Lesson Plan on Page 12. Many years ago, in a place called Kansas, there lived a little girl whose name was Dorothy. She didn t have a Mom and Dad, so she lived with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on their farm. She had a dog named Toto and her friends were the people who worked on the farm. Dorothy was bored with her life doing chores on the farm. She felt like Kansas was gray and dull and she wished to go to a place full of adventure, excitement, and color. Our show begins in the Land of Oz after a large tornado has picked up Dorothy s house along with her dog Toto. Dorothy finds herself confused in the land of Oz not sure where she is. Dorothy is greeted by two Munchkins, Elfra, Boq as well as the Good Witch of the North. Dorothy discovers that the tornado has dropped her house on top of the Wicked Witch of the East. Elfra and Boq celebrate that the Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and now Munchkinland will no longer have to be afraid of the Witch. Dorothy tries to explain that she did not mean to kill the Witch, that it was an accident. The Good Witch of the North gives Dorothy the Witch of the East s silver slippers, which have now turned ruby red, as if by magic. She tells Dorothy that she hopes the magical slippers will be helpful to her on her journey. Dorothy is grateful but still is worried about getting home to Kansas, the Good Witch explains that the only way to get home would be to ask the Wizard of Oz at the Emerald City. The Munchkins tell Dorothy if she wants to meet the Wizard she should follow the Yellow Brick Road. So Dorothy is off on a grand adventure! Along the way she met a scarecrow, who climbed down off his pole and decided to come with her. He was sad because he had no brain, just a head full of straw, and he was hoping the Wizard would be able to give him a brain, so they set off together. A little further on they came upon a man made of tin. The poor Tin Man was all rusted up and couldn t move, so they gave him some oil from his oil can. He was sad because he didn t have a heart; he hoped that the Wizard would be able to give him one. He joined Dorothy and the Scarecrow and off they went to see the Wizard. But by now, the forest was getting darker and spookier and all of a sudden a lion appeared. She tried to fight the Scarecrow and the Tin Man and even had a go at Toto, but Dorothy stood right up to her and hits her on the nose. The Lion burst into tears. It turned out that she was a very cowardly lion indeed and she had no courage at all. They all agreed that she should come along to see the Wizard and ask him for some courage. On the journey the friends come across a field of magic red poppies. Even though the four friends and Toto could see The Emerald City in the distance, the hazy smell of the poppies was making The Wonderful Wizard of OZ - Educator s Guide 3
them fall asleep, all except the Tin Man and the Scarecrow. Thanks to some quick thinking by the Scarecrow and Tin Man, they make a chair with their arms and carry Dorothy and the Lion away from the magical poppies, allowing them to wake up again. When the friends arrive at The Emerald City they are met by a Guard who says they can not come in to see the Wizard. Dorothy asks politely and convinces the Guard to let them in. The Guard gives them green glasses which he says they must wear to enter the city. The four friends enter the Emerald City amazed by the beauty of the city and how everything seems to be green. The Guard tells the friends it is their lucky day because the Wizard wants to see them. The four friends go in one at a time to see the Wizard and discovers that he appears differently to each person. The Scarecrow sees the Wizard as a beautiful, mean woman. The Tin Man sees the Wizard as a big, hairy, horrible beast. The Lion sees the Wizard as a huge ball of fire. The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion are sad because the Wizard tells them that he will not help them. Dorothy gets her courage together and decides she will face the Wizard herself and ask for the things her friends need. Dorothy enters the Wizards chambers and finds that he appears as a huge head, which frightens her. He agrees to help them, but only if they help get rid of the Wicked Witch of the West. Off they go, a little daunted by their task, to find the Witch s castle in the West. Meanwhile the Wicked Witch of the West was plotting against Dorothy. She prepares her army of flying monkeys to stop Dorothy and her friends. In the darkest, scariest part of the wood, the monkeys fly down and attack the four friends. Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion are snatched up into the air and the others are scattered all around. The monkeys take Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion to the Wicked Witch s Castle. The Witch demands the ruby slippers and tries to trick Dorothy into giving them to her. The Lion tries to protect Dorothy from the Witch, but the Witch casts a spell on the Lion making her feel terrible pain. In an attempt to save the Lion, Dorothy throws a bucket of water at the Witch, not realizing water was the Witch s only weakness. The Witch screams and slowly melts away to nothing. With the Wicked Witch now gone, the Monkey King tells Dorothy that she now controls the flying monkey s and agrees to grant her three wishes. Dorothy wishes for the monkeys to take her and her friends back to Oz to tell the Wizard that the Wicked Witch is dead. The monkeys pick up Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion and take them to the Scarecrow and Tin Man. The four friends reunited, are excited they will finally get their wishes from the Wizard. The friends ask Dorothy what her home is like. She explains that Kansas is gray, flat and that she has to do chores on the farm all day long. The friends ask why she would want to go back to such a horrible place. Dorothy explains that for people who have a heart, and brain home means something special no matter how beautiful another place may be, you still yearn to be back home. She says there is not place like home. Back at the Emerald City, the Wizard is surprised to find the four friends returning so quickly. The Wizard hurries to prepare himself to appear before Dorothy. In his rush he creates a puppet that 4 Serenbe Playhouse Academy
is falling apart and not nearly as scary as before. The puppet begins falling apart and Dorothy realizes that she has been fooled. She pulls back the curtain to discover that the Wizard is just a man with a puppet. The Lion cries out, The Wizard is a bigger coward than me!. The Wizard explains to the four that he isn t actually a Wizard at all, but a puppeteer from Omaha playing make believe and creating tricks which he calls humbug. The four friends take off their green glasses and realize that the Emerald City isn t green at all, it was just the glasses making everything look green. The Wizard explains that he was flown here in his hot air balloon one day and that he used his tricks and humbugs to trick the Wicked Witches and keep them away. The friends are disappointed that the Wizard can not grant their wishes. Seeing how sad they are the Wizard says that he has a little bit of humbug left, and he thinks he can help them. He gives the Scarecrow some wheat bran and stuffs it into his hat. The Wizard tells him that he is learning something new every day and that what he needs is experience, not brains. The Wizard turns to the Lion and gives her a vial of liquid courage and tells her that no one is not afraid when they face danger, that what she really needs is confidence. The Wizard then goes to the Tin Man and gives him a heart patch to wear on his sleeve. He tells the Tin Man that with a heart he will experience pain and sadness as well as love, but it is better to have loved than to have not loved at all. Turning to Dorothy, he explains that it is time for him to leave the land of Oz and the best way for the two of them to get home is by hot air balloon. The four friends create a hot air balloon out of silk in preparation for Dorothy and the Wizard to return home. The Wizard is amazed at how much work they accomplish together in creating the balloon. While the Wizard prepares to fly away in the balloon, Toto runs off and Dorothy rushes after him. It is too late though, the wind picks the balloon up and carries the Wizard away without Dorothy. Sad and afraid that she will never see her aunt or uncle again, the friends make a plan to get Dorothy back to Kansas. They call on the Monkey King and Dorothy uses her second wish to see Glinda the Good Witch of the South. Dorothy and her friends are greeted kindly by Glinda and the citizens of the South. Glinda says she can help Dorothy get home but first must ask for help from the Monkey King. Glinda uses her three wishes to help the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion. She asks sends the Scarecrow to be the ruler over Emerald City, since the Wizard was now gone. She asks to send the Tin Man to Munchkin Land, so he may find love. She asks to send the Lion back to her home so she can be reunited with her family. Before the Monkey King grants Glinda her wishes, he reminds Dorothy that she still has one more wish. Dorothy tells the King that she wishes for the monkeys to have their freedom. Glinda then explains that Dorothy had the opportunity to go home all along. All she had to do was tap her heels together three times. Dorothy then realizes that if she had not made the journey she would not have met her friends, and they would not have received their wishes. Glinda then explains that the magic of Oz is all around her in life, all she has to do is look for it with her heart. Back home Aunty Em is relieved to find Dorothy after being missing for so long. Aunty Em thinks that Dorothy must have imagined a place so amazing as Oz. Dorothy explains that if she will close her eyes she can see Oz all around her. They close their eyes and see the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion waving goodbye. - The End The Wonderful Wizard of OZ - Educator s Guide 5
Characters of Oz A Guide to the Characters in Oz Dorothy For younger children, seeing how a character like the Wizard or the Wicked Witch of the West is created will not spoil the story but may prevent it from being too frightening. 8 Building the Yellow Brick Road Math At Serenbe Playhouse we built a yellow brick road through the middle of Serenbe, JUST LIKE in the land of Oz! It takes a lot of yellow bricks to build a road, and we need your help. Have your student color/decorate and cut out the yellow bricks on the following page. The bricks are put into units of ones, fives, and tens. Then create math problems students will utilize to build the yellow brick road. Have students use the bricks as a visual aid, also have students write out the equation on the board. Sample Equations: Dorothy has 5 yellow bricks. The Scarecrow has 3 yellow bricks. How many bricks do they have if they put them together? The Lion had 26 yellow bricks, but the Wicked Witch stole 10 of her bricks. How many bricks does the Lion have now? The Tin man has 5 yellow bricks. The monkey king grants the Tin Man s wish and multiplies the bricks by 3. How many bricks does the Tin man have now? 8 Serenbe Playhouse Academy

Guide to Rainbows Science Rainbows are a beautiful wonder of nature. They seem to be magical in nature, but their is a scientific explanation as to how rainbows are made. First, let s talk about some of the things people believe about rainbows, from around the world. North America: Some Native American Tribes believe that the rainbow was a bridge between life and death. Norse Myths: The rainbow was considered a bridge between earth and Asgard, which was the home of the gods. Only the very brave, honest, and virtuous could cross this magical bridge. Ancient Greece: The messenger goddess, Iris, always appeared wearing rainbow colors, and later she traveled on a rainbow to bring news to the god Zeus. (Funny fact: she was later though to be responsible for putting holes in cheese!) Ireland: In Irish stories, the rainbow led to a pot of gold, buried by the Leprechauns. It was believed if you could find the end of the rainbow you could find the pot of gold. Of course, you never could, for scientific reasons we will now explain. The Science of Rainbows Light is made up of a series of colors. The colors are always in the same order. RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, and VIOLET. An easy way to remember this order is the phrase ROY G BIV Each color has a different wavelength which reflects off the back of a water droplet. We see a rainbow because the water droplets are falling through the air and we see the shining through them. The sun s white light is broken up into the colors of the rainbow by the rain drops. Did you know that each person sees a slightly different rainbow? That is because the way you see the rainbow depends on the angle you see it from. White light separates into different colors (wavelengths) on entering the raindrop, as red light is refracted by a lesser angle than blue light. On leaving the raindrop, the red rays have turned through a smaller angle than the blue rays, producing a rainbow. (Wikipedia Commons) 10 Serenbe Playhouse Academy

Retelling A Story About Literary Adaptation Plot Analysis Literary adaptation is the adapting of a literary source (e.g. a novel, short story, poem) to another genre or medium, such as a film, a stage play, or even a video game. It can also involve adapting the same literary work in the same genre or medium, just for different purposes, e.g. to work with a smaller cast, in a smaller venue (or on the road), or for a different demographic group (such as adapting a story for children). The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been adapted MANY times over the years and is a great way to introduce the concepts of adaptation, story retelling, and plot analysis. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz started out as a book written by L. Frank Baum. From this book MANY versions of the Wizard of Oz were written. These versions are called adaptations. An adaptation is a story that is retold in a new way. The Wizard of Oz has been retold in many new ways over the years. Let s explore some of these variations of the original story. The Wizard of Oz Movie (1939) In this version Dorothy visits Oz in a dream, in the book Dorothy visits Oz for real. Dorothy s slippers are Ruby instead of Silver. The Wicked Witch has a much larger role in this version. In this version it is not required to wear green glasses to enter the Emerald City. The Good Witch of the North (who has no name in the book), Glinda the Good Witch of the South, and the Queen of the Field Mice are merged into one omniscient character, Glinda the Good Witch of the North. The Wiz Musical (1975) Film (1978) Dorothy is a 24 year old school teacher from Harlem. Dorothy and Toto are carried away in a magical snow storm. The land of Oz takes place in New York. The Good Witch of the North is named Miss One. The Wicked Witch of the East is named Evermean. The Wicked Witch of the West is named Evillene. The Emerald City takes place in the World Trade Center. The Flying Monkeys are a motorcycle gang. 12 Serenbe Playhouse Academy
Wicked Book (1995) Musical (2003) This is the story of what happened before Dorothy came to the land of Oz. Wicked is told from the perspective of the witches of Oz. Glinda the Good is originally named Galinda, and changes her name while in school. The Wicked Witch of the West is named Elphaba and we learn through this story that maybe she wasn t as Wicked as we think. Maybe she was just misunderstood and a victim of circumstances. A minor subplot to this story tells us how the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion become the way they are. The Wizard of Oz Musical (2011) This musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on the 1939 Movie. This version uses many songs from the original movie, plus several new songs written especially for this show. In this version the Wizard requires that Dorothy bring him the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. If she completes this task, he will grant her wishes. In the end Dorothy realizes she hit her head and it was all a dream, until a gust of wind blows open the cupboard doors revealing the ruby slippers. Oz The Great and Powerful Movie (2013) This is a prequel to the Original 1939 Movie. This version is told from the perspective of the Wizard of Oz, Oscar Diggs. The Wicked Witch of the West is named Theodora. The Wicked Witch of the East is named Evanora. In this movie we see how the Oscar Diggs becomes the Wizard of Oz. This version keeps you guessing who is actually a Wicked Witch and who is a Good Witch. It is not until the end of the movie that everyone s true intentions are revealed and good triumphs over evil. Legends of Oz: Dorothy s Return Movie (2014) This movie is loosely based on Dorothy of Oz by L. Frank Baum s great-grandson Roger Stanton Baum. This story takes place after the original Wizard of Oz. Their is trouble in the land of Oz and the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion come together to bring Dorothy back to Oz. In this version the villain is a Jester who is the brother of the Wicked Witch of the West. The Jester has captured Glinda the Good and is turning citizens of Oz into marionette puppets. Dorothy saves the land of Oz and after returning home realizes she can help save her farm and town after the damage from the tornado. Utilize YouTube to look at the film trailers and clips from these adaptations. The Wonderful Wizard of OZ - Educator s Guide 13
Retelling A Story Cont d.. About Literary Adaptation Plot Analysis Serenbe Playhouse s version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz also is an adaptation of the original book. We made small changes to fit the size of our cast, the setting, and the tone that is unique to Serenbe. In our version, Dorothy is daydreaming on her farm. Oz is in her imagination and she can travel there whenever she wants. Because Oz lives in her backyard, all the characters are made from items found on a farm. Creating Your Own Story In order to create an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, students need to understand the different parts of a story. Use the flash cards on the following page to illustrate the various parts of a story. Spend a few minutes talking about each part of the story and answer any questions students may have. Place the flash cards on a board and read the Synopsis of Oz from the beginning of this packet. As you read have students identify the different parts of the story. Write the students observations on the board under the flash card categories. You may also do this exercise with any story you are currently reading in class. Another way to utilize this lesson is to give each student a work sheet with the storytelling categories, have students create their own retelling of Oz. After they have completed the worksheet, have students share their versions with the class. If students enjoy this activity, you may want to keep the storytelling flashcards permanently in your classroom to utilize in the future.
