1 FernUniversität in Hagen Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences Political Science I: State and Governance Contact: Module belonging: 1.5 Last modification: Instructor: Dr. Tuuli-Marja Kleiner, M.A. Consultation: by arrangement Compact course Sources of Political Participation Summary This is a survey seminar on determinants of political participation and its implications for democracy. It will basically cover mass participation (voting, volunteering, activism, etc.) but analyze participation of certain groups, too. The primary focus will be on political participation in Germany and Europe. We begin by clarifying basic ideas and different understandings of how to conduct research, especially from the empirical-analytical research perspective. Only this part will be held in German. Afterwards, we examine democratic theories about political participation and then discuss incentives and obstacles to participating. We explore variations in political participation across groups of citizens as well as differences on the local, national and international level. Throughout the course we will play close attention to empirical studies trying to answer the following main questions: What are the dominant theories and concepts regarding democratic participation? What stimulates or depresses political engagement? How much is participation biased by class, race, or gender? How are political attitudes and political behavior interconnected? Which context factors determine individual political engagement? Which parts do networks, economic, and cultural factors play in this context? 1
