1 Dear Incoming Pre AP English I Student, Statistics show that continued reading improves test scores and prepares students for the challenges of a college curriculum and the demands of a knowledge based career path. With this in mind, Bowie High School requires a summer reading assignment for all students in 9 th through 12 th grade Pre AP/AP English classes. This assignment aligns with the English I curriculum and promotes skills critical to student success on the Advanced Placement exams. The English I Pre AP teachers have selected the following summer reading choices for incoming students: 1. Mythology by Edith Hamilton (Part One, Part Three, and Part Four) and 2. One of the following selections chosen by the student: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card The Secret Life of Bees Sue Monk Kidd The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins The student should track the hero s journey as he/she reads the novel. A handout with an explanation of each step is provided as well as a blank copy to fill out. Also, in conjunction with the reading assignment, the student will view the film adaptation of his/her chosen novel during the summer. A compare/contrast essay between the novel and the film adaptation should be ready for submission on the first day of class. The scoring rubric and essay prompt are attached to this letter. Students should expect an objective assessment over Mythology during the first week of class in the fall. Use the attached study guide to assist you as you read. You should fill out the chart legibly using pencil or pen; you will be expected to turn in the completed chart the day of the exam. The study questions are optional; however, if you choose to complete the study guide questions, you may use those notes on the test. As a district, Arlington ISD embraces the life long love of reading; our goal is to instill that love in all of our students. Thank you for your continued support.
