5 ELICOS, English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students Our ELICOS courses (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) are thorough courses enabling students to quickly reach their English goals, whether for International communication, studying in formal programs in Australia or to get the English language skills to help get a job. Whatever your goal, one of the following courses is sure to suit your needs: General English for Elementary to Upper Intermediate+ IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Preparation Intermediate+ ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency Rating) Preparation Intermediate+ EAP (English for Academic Purposes) Upper Intermediate EAP Nursing (English for Academic Purposes Nursing 10 weeks) Each program runs for 12 weeks but you can study for any length of time from two 52 weeks or more! You can study 20 hours face-to-face with your class teacher in ELICOS and then join the many student activities offered on campus. Study tours combines study, fun and cultural experiences to offer study-leisure group tours in Brisbane. Your language skills and knowledge of Australian culture will develop through our group study tours. Study tours can be tailored to your requirements including scientific, technical or special interest tours. Holiday study tours combine English language classes, leisure and cultural activities while technical study tours combine English language classes and/or short programs, leisure and cultural activities. Please note: These are sample activities and class times only. Teachers may change some sessions according to the needs and interests of the students. 6 English Language Programs General English Elementary to Upper Intermediate (Intensive) Course No CRICOS No Duration Intake FFS M 2-48 weeks any Monday Entry requirements: Entry to each level will be determined by the learner s English language proficiency as measured by interview and placement test or recent IELTS/TOEFL or other scores. Students under 18 years of age are required to provide details of guardianship in Australia. Description: This series of programs provides English language activities that will enhance the learner s ability to meet personal, educational and vocational goals. There are four levels, each lasting 12 weeks. Students can start class on any Monday throughout the academic year. It is recommended students start at the beginning of a program to obtain maximum benefit from that program. The offering of Advanced Level is subject to the number of students. Further options: Students seeking direct entry to SBIT s formal programs should transfer after passing upper intermediate level in the English for Academic Purposes program (EAP), IELTS or ISLPR Preparation Programs. Students may need to take an official IELTS or ISLPR exam. I can guarantee to international students that SBIT is a great place to study, where you can meet great people and acquire knowledge about English. Their highly qualified teachers have encouraged me to learn how to speak, read and write English effectively in a practical and engaging way. Yoonjeong Kim (Jane) General English IELTS English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Course No CRICOS No Duration FFS M 12 weeks Entry requirements: IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 515, ISLPR 2 or successful completion of General English Upper Intermediate high or satisfactory results in a Southbank Institute of Technology ELICOS placement test. Description: This is a 12 week program designed to provide students with the study skills necessary for entry into a formal program requiring an equivalent entry level of IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 530 or ISLPR 2+. Further options: Satisfactory completion of this program will give students direct entry to most of the formal programs at SBIT provided that students meet academic and other entry requirements. Certain programs such as Diploma of Interpreting, Diploma of Nursing, Diploma of Paramedical Sciences and Diploma of Dental Technology have English entry requirements higher than ISLPR 2+, IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 530. Southbank Institute of Technology is accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme.

7 English for Academic Purposes - Nursing Course No CRICOS No Duration FFS M 10 weeks ISLPR Preparation Program Course No CRICOS No Duration FFS K 4-6 weeks English Language Programs Description: This course is specifically designed for students who are going to enrol into the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Division 2HLT51667) at Southbank Institute of Technology. There is a focus on the English language knowledge and skills required for success at a tertiary level in the specific field of nursing and health care. Further options: Satisfactory completion of this course will give students direct entry to the Diploma of Nursing at SBIT provided that students meet academic and other entry requirements. Entry requirements: English Proficiency: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 530, ISLPR 3 for Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) HLT This course provides entry into the Diploma of Nursing. English Language Assessment International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) Test Course No Cost Duration Intake FFS012 $300 all skills 15 minutes to two weekly $180 one skill hours depending on the number of skills being tested Career opportunities: A score of ISLPR 2 in each skill will give students entry to the Certificate III in EET program or English for Academic Purposes program at Southbank Institute of Technology. A score of ISLPR 2+ in each skill will give students entry to most of SBIT s formal programs provided that students meet academic and other entry requirements. Certain courses such as Diploma of Nursing, Diploma of Paramedical Sciences, Diploma of Dental Technology and Diploma of Civil Engineering have English entry requirements higher than IELTS 5.5, ISLPR 2.+, TOEFL 530. Description: This course assesses English language proficiency by the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR). This test may be completed by both international students and migrants. Further options: further study. Career opportunities: Entry into formal studies. Entry requirements: ISLPR 2 or IELTS 5.0 or successful completion of SBIT General English Intermediate low level or satisfactory result in an ELICOS placement test. Description: This course prepares students for the internationally recognised International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) examination. A formal ISLPR examination will be taken in the final week of the course. Further options: further study. IELTS Preparation Program Course No CRICOS No Duration Intake FFS G 2-52 weeks any Monday Description: This program will prepare students for the International English Language Testing System examination (IELTS). Further options: Students with IELTS 5.5 (official test taken externally) or successful completion of 12 weeks of IELTS Prep will gain direct entry to Certificate and Diploma level courses at (except Diploma of Dental Technology, Civil Engineering, Nursing and Paramedical Science). Students may gain direct entry to university provided a sufficient grade is achieved in an externally taken IELTS examination. Entry requirements: IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 515, ISLPR 2 or successful completion of General English Intermediate high level or satisfactory results in a SBIT ELICOS placement test. Pathway to university Master of Education TESOL (QUT) 2 semesters Career opportunities: Upon successful completion of the program you will be able to teach English language courses across a range of sectors overseas including: private English language and English conversation schools for adults high schools and primary schools (provided you have any specific teaching qualifications or registration required in the country you want to teach in) private lessons and small group lessons teaching and working in senior positions within overseas TESOL institutions (NB: other qualifications may be necessary in certain countries in certain TESOL contexts) Entry requirements: Successful completion of Vocational Graduate Certificate in TESOL and English Language Development (VGC TESOL); or a Bachelor Degree (any discipline), three-year diploma or other equivalent higher education qualification; and a TESOL qualification meeting NEAS guidelines for ELICOS or AMEP and at least one year s post qualification TESOL teaching experience with a range of client groups at a range of language proficiency levels; and for learners from a non-english speaking background: IELTS 6.5 (with no individual band under 6.0) or ISLPR two skills at 3+ and two skills at 3 (or equivalent) Description: TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a rapidly growing international industry with a high demand around the world for qualified English teachers. A Vocational Graduate Diploma is a high level post graduate qualification between a Bachelor Degree and a Masters Degree, with a focus on applying highly specialised teaching knowledge to develop practical techniques to use both in your own classroom and in helping to manage an English language school. Our Vocational Graduate Diploma of TESOL and English Language Development program provides you with highly specialised skills and knowledge in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages to help you to advance within the TESOL industry overseas. It gives you the practical skills to effectively develop TESOL curricula or other workplace projects, use advanced language analysis skills in preparing English language students for language assessment and conduct research into your own TESOL practice. It includes a practice unit where you teach a class of English language students. As a post graduate student studying at a high academic level, you will do a significant amount of independent study in your own time and the timetabled classes are organised to help you achieve this. Students can study from 2 weeks to 48 weeks; and can expect to progress through each level in approximately 12 weeks. 11 ELICOS pathways at Southbank Institute of Technology Language Centre General English Courses for elementary to upper intermediate From an elementary to upper-intermediate level, the General English courses at SBIT allow students to develop their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary in an integrated way through interactive classes. Students enjoy 20 hours of face to face contact time with enthusiastic and highly qualified teachers, in mixed nationality classes of students at a similar level of English language development. Progress through each level is measured with weekly tests and students can expect to move to the next level as soon as they have developed each of their skills to the appropriate standard. The maximum time to complete a full level is 12 weeks. Each student is given a reference handbook to take home. Travel and accommodation is conveniently located in the heart of the city, and easy to get to by bus, train or ferry from any Brisbane suburb. SBIT does not provide accommodation but we can show you where to look for accommodation in and around Brisbane. Airport reception and Homestay can also be arranged prior to departure.

13 Health insurance The Australian Government requires international students to be covered by health insurance. The international team can assist with health cover purchase, locating medical practices, booking appointments, making claims, and general health insurance enquiries. Social and cultural activities Students will be invited to attend various social and cultural events throughout the year. In the past students have taken bus tours around Brisbane, visited the Australian Woolshed and Australia Zoo, participated in international fairs, enjoyed student BBQs, and joined sporting teams such as volleyball and basketball. 14 How to enrol Step 1. Send your application Enrol online. Visit southbank.edu.au/international Then fax, or post the following supporting documents to : Copy of passport (and Australian Visa if available) Certified copies of educational certificate and academic records Evidence of employment history (if required) References from employers (if required) English language test results IELTS, TOEFL or ISLPR if available Portfolio of artwork or demo tape/cd (if required). Step 2. Return signed forms and meet conditions You receive your Offer of Place. will send you a conditional Offer of Place. This may be a Conditional Offer on the basis that you meet certain requirements, for example any documents stated in Step 1. Sign and return the attached Southbank Institute of Technology International Services Refund Policy and Terms and Conditions Policy Send the required documentation to show that conditions have been met (if your offer is conditional) Portfolio of artwork or demo tape (if required) If under 18 years of age, a student care arrangement must be made. Step 3. Pay the fees Before the expiry date on the Offer of Place, you should: Meet all entry conditions of your Offer of Place and pay tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as stated on your Offer of Place. For Southbank Institute of Technology s current health insurance provider check our website. When you have paid your fees you will receive your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (ecoe). American Express not accepted You will be sent: A Confirmation of Enrolment (ecoe) for International students from A receipt for your payment. Closer to your course start date, orientation information will be sent to you, or visit SBIT s International website for course start dates. 15 Step 5. Arrange your travel Contact a travel agent in your home country and arrange travel to Australia. Please remember: As a general rule, arrange your travel after your visa has been approved, not before. cannot handle your personal mail or baggage; you must send this to your own address in Australia once you have arranged your accommodation. All personal mail sent to Southbank Institute of Technology will be returned to the sender. Step 6. Arrange your accommodation does not arrange accommodation, but we can show you where to look after you arrive in Australia. Step 7. Orientation Students must attend orientation on the first day of their English class. Check your Orientation letter or online for the time and the place of your program orientation.
