3 Instructions for New Zealand Lapbook. Look through this guide to collect the materials you need for your lapbook. It is easy. You need a manila folder, printer, glue, scissors and coloured pencils. You will also need an atlas and some travel brochures for New Zealand to use on the last activity. At times you will see there are two options to cut out; choose the one you want. You will find a small amount of information on each section. For more information you can try this website. Layout Instructions Lapbooking sections can be done in any order. Follow the visual guide to help you work out the layout. If you want to change the layout that s fine too. It s your lapbook. Make the most of it! FOLD YOUR LAPBOOK Fold manila folder into a lapbook shape as demonstrated on layout instructions below. Then follow the instructions for each section. 5 The New Zealand Flag The New Zealand Flag is the symbol of the government and people of New Zealand. The royal blue background depicts the sea and sky. The stars represent the Southern Cross which indicates New Zealand s position in the South Pacific Ocean. The Union Flag honours New Zealand s historical foundations and the fact that New Zealand was once a British colony and dominion. How is the New Zealand flag similar to the Australian flag? How is it different? Which flag was adopted first the Australian Flag or the New Zealand Flag? These images can be used for the cover page. You decide which image you would like to use. The first two images are the New Zealand Flag. The bottom image is the Australian flag.

6 The Union Jack & The New Zealand Flag Did you know the Union Jack is a powerful Christian symbol? If you didn t you will soon find out as you research the Union Jack. The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom and it is also a part of the New Zealand flag which was adopted by New Zealand 1869 and became New Zealand s national flag in It signifies New Zealand s British origins. It is made up of three crosses. The red cross of St George dates from the time of Crusades and the decoration of the tunics covering the chain mail of the crusaders. St George was a Roman soldier and Christian martyr. There are many stories told about him, perhaps the most famous is when he saved a princess from being eaten by a dragon. When the King tried to reward St George he would not accept any payment he just asked the king to take good care of the church and give to the poor. It was in the year 1415 AD that St George became the Patron Saint of England after Henry V miraculously won the battle of Agincourt in France with his English soldiers. The blue cross of St Andrew Saint Andrew was one of the 12 apostles. Tradition tells us that after Christ s death Andrew spread the gospel in Greece and Asia Minor. He was crucified on a diagonal cross by the Romans in Southern Greece. A monk took St Andrews bones to Scotland to get them far away from Greece. A chapel was built to house the holy relics and this chapel turned into a cathedral called St Andrews. This site became a holy pilgrimage for the Scots. The white cross of St Patrick An apostle to Ireland who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. Patrick was from a Roman family but he was born in Britain in 387AD. At sixteen he was kidnapped and became a slave in Ireland. While a slave he came to trust in Christ as his Saviour. One day he had a dream of a ship ready to sail and if he went to it he could escape. He followed the dream. After returning home he continued in his faith and eventually returned as a missionary to Ireland. Although he had many trials in Ireland, he managed to win favour with the kings and people. He spread the word of God across the countryside converting almost the entire population of the island. Cut and colour the Union Jack image. You can add information about the crosses under each flap.

8 Anthem Copywork New Zealand is unique in that it has two national anthems and one can be sung in Maori and English. Choose one stanza from one of the New Zealand national anthems. There are two places to put the anthems in your lapbook.

12 The Southern Cross (Crux) The constellation of the Southern Cross is an important navigational feature of the Southern Hemisphere. It signifies where New Zealand is found geographically and has been associated with New Zealand from very early days. Both the Australian & New Zealand flags display the Southern Cross (as does Papua New Guinea and Samoa). Crux is Latin for cross. Cut around outline and fold in points. 13 New Zealand Coat of Arms This version of the New Zealand Coat of Arms has been used since Can you identify the symbols used in the Coat of Arms? On the shield; the four stars represent the Southern Cross, the ships represent New Zealand s sea trade, the fleece represents the farming industry, the crossed hammers represent the mining industry and the wheat sheaf represents agricultural industry. A Maori Chieftain holding a taiaha (a Maori war weapon) is on one side of the shield and a European woman holding the New Zealand Flag is on the other. The Crown represents that Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of New Zealand and Silver ferns are at the base of the shield. Colour in the Coat of Arms.

14 New Zealand s Neighbours New Zealand closest neighbour is Australia (Norfolk Island). Other countries close by are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. Using a map locate these South Pacific nations and mark them on the map below then paste this picture in to your lapbook.

15 The Kiwi The Kiwi bird has become known nationally and internationally as one of the emblems for New Zealand. You will find Kiwi birds on many crests and badges of New Zealand clubs and organisations. Colour in the Kiwi or draw your own The military began using it on their badges as early as In 1906 an Australian man, with a New Zealand wife, launched a boot polish called Kiwi. The polish was widely marketed in Britain and the USA during World War I. The Kiwi soon began to be internationally recognised as a symbol of New Zealand. During World War One the name "Kiwi" for New Zealand soldiers came into general use. The Kiwi (New Zealand Army) Football Team enhanced the emblem's popularity when it toured the British Isles, France and Germany in The Silver Fern The Silver Fern is a New Zealand fern species, also known as Ponga. It has dark green leaves on the upper side and shimmering silver underneath. The Silver Fern has been used with New Zealand military insignia, company logos and various sporting teams including the All Blacks rugby team. You can see Silver ferns at the base of the New Zealand Coat of Arms.

16 More Flags of New Zealand The Queens Flag The Queen's Personal Flag for New Zealand symbolises the fact that Queen Elizabeth II is The Queen of New Zealand. Adopted in 1962, it is flown only by Her Majesty when in New Zealand. The Governor Generals Flag The Governor-General's flag is flown on all occasions when the Governor-General is present, and takes precedence over the New Zealand Flag. It is flown continuously over Government House when the Governor-General is in residence, and on vehicles used by the Governor-General for official occasions. The New Zealand Red Flag New Zealand Government ships must fly the New Zealand Flag. Other New Zealand ships, other than Government ships may fly the New Zealand Flag, the New Zealand Red Ensign, or any flag authorised by either the Sovereign or the Governor-General. The New Zealand White Flag Ships and commissioned shore establishments of the Royal New Zealand Navy fly the New Zealand White Ensign. This flag has the Union Jack in the first quarter, on a white background. The Southern Cross, represented by four five-pointed red stars, appears in the fly. Royal New Zealand Air Force Flag The Royal New Zealand Air Force Ensign is hoisted daily at Air Force establishments. It is also flown on Royal New Zealand Air Force aeroplanes carrying Foreign and Commonwealth Heads of State and Heads of Government, the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Chiefs of Staff, Ambassadors, and other distinguished persons. The ensign has a light blue ground with the Union Jack in the first quarter and the Air Force roundel on the fly. New Zealand Civil Air Flag The New Zealand Civil Air Ensign may be flown on any New Zealand aircraft, licensed aerodrome, or place authorised as an aerodrome.

17 Pleasant Talk Of Places & Map Work A lovely way to learn about the geography of a country is using travel brochures. Charlotte Mason called this learning about the country through pleasant talk about places. I love this idea. She doesn't want children to be bogged down with geography facts. She wants children's geography lessons to be something that will capture their interest. She thinks that there should be lots of pictures to look at and a story that will give them a sense of adventure. An excellent place to look for pleasant talk of places is in a travel brochure. Find some New Zealand travel brochures online or at a travel shop. Read through the places that they recommend you visit. Use the back cover of the lapbook to make a collage of travel pictures from New Zealand. The brochures can also be used to make some notebooking pages. Have your child locate places on the New Zealand map and label places of significance.

19 How To Use New Zealand Geography Pages New Zealand Geography Pages is a resource to help your child create an educational keepsake of their New Zealand geography studies. With notebooking learning is not limited to a textbook or a worksheet but rather to what has captured the child s interest or to what they know. These pages are versatile and practical and can be used with many New Zealand resources. There is no right or wrong way to use these pages. The following suggestions are only a guide to aid you in getting started: Collect some New Zealand resources so that you have some information to start your research. It is not necessary to use all of the pages in the notebook but rather select and print off the pages that are of interest. Most pages are black and white. Add your own colour with art materials and pictures. Some pages have blank shapes to add pictures. Travel magazines, old history books, internet images, original illustrations are all excellent sources for pictures. At the back of the ebook you will find some blank templates. Use these for topics that we have not covered in the notebook. Many homeschooling families report that notebooking is a great encouragement for them. When they look back on previous notebooks they are proud of what they have done. I know my own children especially enjoy the admiration from family and friends. I hope you enjoy using this resource.
