Therapy Members Involved: Leader: Gráinne Foster Music Therapist Assistance: intern Speech and Language Therapist Students 1-4 Speech and Language Therapy Students Overall Programme Aim: To improve the effectiveness of the participants functional communication by offering a supported and varied environment for people to practise communication strategies. Session Aims: To facilitate nonverbal communication through the medium of music. Materials Required: An assortment of tuned and untuned percussion instruments, including ones that can be used with only one hand. Audio recording equipment. Notepad and pens, other communication aids (ipads), communication books. Environmental Adjustments: Make sure that there are no external distractions in the room. Make sure that anyone with a unilateral weakness is sitting comfortably, with their affected limbs appropriately supported.

2 Therapy team members to monitor their own speech, paying particular attention to speech rate, using appropriate language and sentence length, and taking appropriate pauses to ensure they have been understood by the group before continuing. Activities: Setting up (5 minutes) Assist the clients in entering the room and make sure that they feel comfortable. Introduction (5 minutes) Music Therapist to give a quick talk to the group to talk a little bit about music therapy, and to outline what the session will contain, give the clients an opportunity to ask any questions. Warm up call and response rhythm improvisation (10 minutes) Everyone chooses an instrument, one person makes a sound/rhythm, and everyone responds in whatever way they want. SLT students are to sit in between the clients and facilitate/model the desired activity. Activity 1 12 bar blues pass the instrument (15 minutes) Everyone takes an instrument. The music therapist begins to perform a 12 bar blues and encourages everyone else with their instrument to play along and join in. When the music stops everyone passes their instrument to the LEFT side. Once the music therapist has noted that all the musical instruments have been successfully passed to the person on the left hand side, she will recommence with the 12 bar blues. The music will continue until everyone is reunited with their original instrument. Activity 2 12 bar blues Improvisation (15 minutes) Everyone chooses an instrument that they are drawn to based on their experience from activity 1. They then take this instrument back to their seat. The music therapist begins to play a different 12 bar blues riff and someone volunteers to play their solo first. After their solo they gesture in whatever way feels appropriate for them to try to encourage the next person to start their solo. Activity 3 song singing (15 minutes) The music therapist to introduce the activity of singing some well known songs. Clients are free to join in if they wish. Warm down - reflective improvisation (10 minutes)

3 Clients are to select an instrument of their choosing that they might have had a particularly enjoyable connection with. The music therapist to begin a free improvisation and the clients and students to join in as/when they feel like they want to. Musicians are encouraged to use their senses to feel the mood of the music and to use this opportunity to reflect on how the music in the session might have changed how they interact with others through music. Listening back to performances, reflection and questionnaire (15 minutes) Clients are encouraged to express any thoughts or feelings about the music therapy session, and to take time to fill in the questionnaire, with the support of the therapy team. Outcome To give clients the opportunity to participate in a music therapy activity as a means to expose them other forms of expressive communication. Outcome Measure At the end of the session clients will be provided with a questionnaire asking for feedback on how they felt the music therapy session went.
