4 Some Things to Consider First Not all types of tooth discolorations lend well to whitening. Sometimes a person may have teeth in which the enamel or dentin is malformed, turning their teeth to a gray shade. Yellow and stained teeth will have the best results with teeth whitening, while gray teeth usually do not respond well to whitening. In such cases this person may have to look for other options such as veneers or crowns, which can be discussed with a dentist. Whitening also only works on natural teeth. Restorations like crowns, veneers, inlays / onlays, fillings etc are not affected by tooth whitening. Generally, the more intensely colored foods and beverages tend to stain the most. The color in these foods and beverages comes from chromogens, which are intensely pigmented molecules that are notorious for staining dental enamel. However, this is not the only thing that determines how much a food or drink will stain your teeth. Another important factor is acidity. Acidic foods can lead to staining by eroding the dental enamel, which temporarily softens teeth and makes them more susceptible to chromogens latching on. Lastly, a type of food compound called tannins can also promote staining. Tannins are pale yellow to light brown chemicals called poly-phenols that are found in plants. They have been used for centuries for "tanning" (dyeing) leathers. Poly-phenols have health benefits for people, but unfortunately they can also stain your teeth. Some common drinks including teas and red wine contain tannins.

7 2: Ways to Reduce Teeth Staining Cu t B a c k : Cut back on the foods and drinks that stain the most. However, some of the foods listed above, such as berries, citrus fruits, and some teas can be beneficial to your health, so you don't necessarily want to cut back on those. Therefore, you will want to make sure you follow all of these tips closely when eating them. U s e a St ra w : Use a straw when drinking beverages that stain. We all need saliva to help cleanse our mouths and neutralize acids that harm tooth enamel, which increases the likelihood of discoloration. Dry mouth can be caused by certain systemic illness or could be the side effect of certain medications. A few natural ways to help reduce dry mouth include reducing caffeine intake (which lowers your saliva production). Sip on water regularly, snack on waterlogged vegetables like celery, and breath through your nose as much as possible. Breathing through your mouth dries it out. If you still have problems with dry mouth, consider trying some dry mouth products, such as B io t e n e.

Brush your teeth with this mixture using a toothbrush. Be forewarned: Baking soda is a gritty substance like sandpaper, so be careful that you have enough hydrogen peroxide mixed in with the soda because if you don t, it could scrub the enamel off your teeth. The paste should not be gritty at all, but rather it should be slightly runny. A p p le C id e r V in e g a r : Apple cider vinegar can whiten teeth if used over a period of time (usually at least a month). However, as with all acids it can remove the enamel on your teeth. After brushing with apple cider vinegar, you will need to brush again with regular toothpaste, or rinse your mouth out really well to get the acid out of your mouth.

11 4: Natural Teeth Whitening Options A c t iv a t e d C h a r c o a l: Activated charcoal can also help to whiten teeth. It may sound very strange, but this is probably the most effective and safe natural teeth whitening method. Activated charcoal is a super absorbent material that contains millions of tiny pores that bind up poisons and chemicals, and safely removes them from the body. In fact, hospitals keep this on hand for use on patients who have ingested toxins. This same absorbent quality can also pull out stains, bacteria and toxins from our mouths! Use a capsule form of activated charcoal, which can be found at a vitamin or health food store. Break open the capsule and apply the contents to a wet toothbrush. Gently brush for 3 to 5 minutes. Yes, this will make your mouth black, but rinse thoroughly after brushing and it will all come off. Do this for 3-5 days in a row, and then once a month for maintenance. A word of caution: Though activated charcoal is great for pulling out unwanted toxins from the body, it can also pull prevent your body from absorbing the things you DO want to ingest. Therefore, minimize swallowing, and brush with it several hours after eating or taking any medications (or even vitamins) to allow your body time to absorb them.

12 5: Over the Counter Whitening Products When it comes to getting whiter teeth, many people turn to over-the-counter kits to help them brighten their smile. Unfortunately, this may not always be the best option. People who use these kits improperly or too often may run into a number of dental issues. For example, using these kits too much can weaken tooth enamel & cause a throbbing sensation that can last for days. Over the counter kits, when over used or used incorrectly can damage your gums or affect your teeth with cavities or leaky restorations. Also, if not used correctly, then people will not get the results that they are looking for. However, there are some decent options out there if you are careful to follow the directions, and are not in need of a large degree of whitening. Using these products for extended periods of time are not recommended by dentists.

13 6: Professional Whitening Products If you tried everything else and you are still not satisfied with your teeth color, then it s time to consult your dentist! Many dentists can provide you with a take-home whitening kit. Though not quite as effective as an in-office treatment, they are still superior to over-the-counter kits. These kits are capable of getting your teeth many shades whiter than an over the counter product, and in less time. Another major benefits of choosing to get a professional whitening kit from your dentist is that you can come in for an exam and consult with your dentist on the best option for the result you want to achieve. Remember also that getting a cleaning before attempting to whiten your teeth will always yield a better result and allow your dentist to make sure there are no dental problems that would hinder a positive result. Also, people who choose this route are usually given detailed instructions from their dentist on how to use them correctly. This increases their chances of having better results.

14 7: In-Office Teeth Whitening In-office teeth whitening is the most effective and safest technique for whitening your teeth FAST. Using a stronger level of whitening solution allows your Dentist to give you instant results, same day! Prior to this type of whitening it is recommended that you are cavity & periodontal disease free and have recently had your teeth cleaned. The procedure begins with a short preparation to protect the lips and gums, only leaving the teeth exposed. A whitening gel is applied to your teeth which works together with a whitening light to break up stains, discoloration, and whitens the teeth. This procedure is done in 3 cycles and takes less than an hour. During that time you can watch a video or listen to music and relax while the whitening gel does its thing. Sensitivity may occur, minor tingling may occur after the procedure, but normally dissipates. This type of whitening is not recommended for patients under 15 years of age. It is recommended to consult your Dentist to see if you would be a candidate for this procedure and to have a shade assessment performed. The average cost for in-office whitening is around $500.00, and the typical result is 4 to 6 shades whiter, but results may vary.
