Ex: Colorado blue spruce or Blue atlas cedar. Why? B/c they sell!

21 * Layout garden borders * Remove turf areas - Shovel, hoe, broadfork, Roundup, solarization * Amend the soil if needed * Add fertilizer if recommended * Plant your plants * Water plants * Add mulch layer (I don t like dealing w/ landscape fabric, but this is an option for weed and moisture control under the mulch layer.) 21

24 Sources of Organic Matter Manure Cow, Chicken, Hog, Etc. Leaves, Straw, & Saw Dust Green Manure Crops Plants grown to be turned under for Organic Matter. Compost Any material based on decayed organic matter. Caution: High carbon based organic sources will many times tie up the nitrogen in the soil making it unavailable for plant uptake for a short period of time.

25 A Right Way to Plant HLA-6414 (Planting Trees and Shrubs) L-440 (Tree Planting Guide) Trees and shrubs Can soak root ball before planting Score root ball if root bound Take burlap and wire off root ball Don t amend soil Add fertilizer if recommended Dig hole times width of root ball Plant level with the soil line, or an inch above ground if clay soil Backfill and pack soil in hole Water immediately Add mulch layer Annuals, perennials, vegetables Loosen roots Can amend soil with compost, potting soil, etc. Add fertilizer if recommended Plant level with soil line, unless they re tomatoes Pack in soil around plant Water immediately Add mulch layer Keep in mind mature width and height
