1 1 DAY Time Capsule Have your child decorate a small to medium-size empty box. Together, write Back-to-School Time Capsule on the outside and place your child s interview, self-portrait, and First Day of School photo inside. Then put it away in a safe place. After completing the same activities next year at back-to-school time, open up the time capsule and show your child how much they ve grown and progressed! Then add that year s interview, portrait, and photo to the time capsule and bury it away until next year.

2 2 DAYS Origami Apple for Teacher It s always nice to send your child off to the first day of school with a little something for their teacher that says Let s have a great year! An origami apple is a fun twist on a traditional teacher s gift, and it makes for a special activity to do with your kid. Write a nice note on the apple leaf to personalize it for your child s new teacher Start with a square piece of paper Fold. Turn over and repeat. 7. Tuck flaps in. Fold. Turn over and repeat Make hole bigger by cutting end Add a green paper leaf. Blow in hole to inflate.

3 3 DAYS Self-Portrait Back to school is a great time to recognize how your child is changing and growing not just through your own eyes, but through their eyes as well. Sit down with your child and have them draw a back-to-school self-portrait or a picture of themselves participating in their favorite sport or other enrichment activity. It s a great way to get your child thinking about how much they ve changed over the last year and how many exciting opportunities and experiences are coming in the year ahead. Plus, you ll get a great keepsake!

4 4 Homework Station DAYS A dedicated homework station is a great way to build good homework habits early on in your child s academic career. Set up a special spot in your home with all the materials he or she needs to complete homework assignments. Be sure homework happens here every day. Placing their after-school snack at the station will encourage them to take care of assignments early in the afternoon and leave the rest of the day for play.

5 5 DAYS First-Day Fun Help your child get set for success with a celebratory First Day of School place mat! This is a great craft activity for the two of you to complete together and make a little back-to-school memory at the same time. Materials: Directions: (1) 11" x 17" blank sheet of paper 1. Have your child decorate the blank sheet of paper. (2) 12" x 18" sheets of clear contact paper glue stick crayons or markers other craft supplies like a hole punch, scissors, colored construction or tissue paper, stickers, glitter, and whatever else you have lying around the house 2. Sandwich the paper between the sheets of contact paper. 3. Enjoy a celebratory First Day of School breakfast on the big day!

6 6 DAYS Back-to-School Interview Sit down with your child and record their answers. Interview Questions: What grade are you starting? What school will you go to? What do you think your favorite subject will be? Who is your best friend? What do you like to eat for breakfast before school? What do you like to eat for lunch? What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you like to play sports? If so, what s your favorite sport to play? What is your favorite book? What are you most looking forward to this school year? Save their interview for a special activity on the final day before school starts.

7 7 DAYS Back-to-School Menu With the first day of school right around the corner, it s time to start thinking about what you need to pick up for breakfasts and lunches. Now is a great time to sit down with your child, plan out a menu, and make a shopping list for the first week of school. They ll get what they want, and you won t have to worry about picky eating at breakfast or food coming back home in their lunchbox.
