Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Exemplar for Internal Achievement Standard Digital Technologies Level 1 This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard Implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system An annotated exemplar is an extract of student evidence, with a commentary, to explain key aspects of the standard. These will assist teachers to make assessment judgements at the grade boundaries. New Zealand Qualification Authority To support internal assessment from 2014 NZQA 2014
Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Excellence For Excellence, the student is required to efficiently implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that students will be required to: construct and test reliable functional systems with well soldered joints, optimised track and component layout, with secure, reliable and well organised connections to any components that are mounted off the circuit board write and debug embedded software so that the programme is logical, efficient and clearly annotated. The student has efficiently implemented basic techniques to construct a functional interactive toy - a teddy bear that responds in some way to an action of a 3 year old child. The second version of the code given (1) shows evidence of testing and debugging, to help produce efficient and logical software code that is starting to be clearly annotated. For a more secure Excellence grade, the student needs to more clearly annotate the software code, and to improve the track optimisation and reliability of the system. The teacher annotations (2) show evidence of where the student could have further improved the track layout to get better optimisation and reliability. NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Merit To meet Merit, the student is required to skilfully implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that the student will have to: construct and test reliable functional systems with well soldered joints write, debug and annotate embedded software so that the programme is logical The student has skilfully implemented basic techniques to construct a functional interactive toy - a teddy bear that responds in some way to an action of a 3 year old child. The quality of the soldering is good (1). The software is logical and the code has some clear annotation added. To move this work to a low Excellence grade, the student needs to show evidence of track optimisation, and show how the components mounted off the board are reliable, with well organised connections. The program for the software would also need enhancing to meet the requirements at Excellence, as it is written at a basic level. NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Merit To meet Merit, the student is required to skilfully implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that the student will have to: construct and test reliable functional systems, with well soldered joints write, debug and annotate embedded software so that the programme is logical. There is evidence that the student has skilfully implemented basic techniques to construct a functional interactive toy - a teddy bear that responds in some way to an action of a 3 year old child. From teacher annotations, The system is reasonably reliable, with some leads to components and sensors questionable. Soldering mostly good but with one connection not good (1). The software code is annotated and appears logical, and there is evidence of testing and debugging (2). To move to a more secure Merit, the student needs to ensure that all connections are reliable, with consistent soldering (3). NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Achieved For Achieved, the student is required to implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that the student will have to: construct and test functional systems write and debug embedded software. The student has implemented basic techniques to construct an interactive toy - a teddy bear that responds in some way to an action of a 3 year old child. There is evidence of the debugging of the system in the evaluation of the software performance (1). To move this example to Merit, the student would need more evidence of the program being logical. Further evidence of the quality of the soldered joints would also need to be provided. NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Achieved For Achieved, the student is required to implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that the student will have to: construct and test functional systems write and debug embedded software. The student has implemented basic techniques to construct an interactive toy - a teddy bear that responds in some way to an action of a 3 year old child. Greater evidence of the software code (1) used in this sample, and enhancement of the soldering connections (2), would provide more robust evidence for this standard. The teacher has annotated the assessment schedule that the reliability of the product was questionable. To move to a more secure Achieved, the student would need to show more evidence of writing and debugging embedded software. NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Digital Technologies for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved For Achieved, the student is required to implement basic techniques in constructing a specified electronic and embedded system. This means that the student will have to: construct and test functional systems write and debug embedded software A sample of work is not available for this grade boundary. In order to reach an Achieved grade, the student s work would typically demonstrate evidence of the above. NZQA 2014
