2 Dear event organiser, Key It gives us great pleasure to provide details of our 2016 programme for education. If you have visited us before you will recognise some of the events which have become firm favourites with schools and education groups. In addition, we have numerous opportunities for combining a heritage train journey linked with well-established activities offered by our partner organisations, Bewdley Museum, Shropshire Council, Worcestershire County Museum, West Midlands Safari Park and Arley Arboretum. Education Team Prices & Booking Conditions The fully inclusive cost of each event is shown adjacent to the relevant description. For certain events a minimum of 20 paying pupils applies. Please see individual price panels for details. One adult travels free for every 10 (or part of 10) paying pupils. Any adults above this free allocation are charged at the child rate for the event. Provisional bookings may be made up to 12 months in advance. This is particularly useful for our most popular events where there may be limited capacity. A deposit is payable when the provisional booking is confirmed. An invoice for the balance due will follow shortly after the visit. What to look out for during 2016 August Country Park Fantastic Fares special deal In partnership with the Country Park the SVR are continuing with a special deal for half term breaks and during August. WWI Trench at The Engine House Visit our WWI trench which was built during 2014 to commemorate the start of WWI. It will be in place for the 2016 season. The exhibit is located outdoors and can be accessed via the Visitor Centre at Highley. New activities at Arley Arboretum Our partnership with Arley Aboretum sees a host of new outdoor activities for all ages in Orienteering, forest school, sensory garden, maze and activity trails are just some of the facilities at this 200 year old aboretum. New WWII Home Front event with Bewdley Museum This new event, in conjunction with Bewdley Museum, takes an in-depth look at life on the home front during World War II. Following a short train journey where the children discover what it was like to be an evacuee, they will learn the about preparations for war and visit a genuine Second World War air raid shelter. Turn to page 7 for more information. 3

3 Take the Train Whilst we organise a range of special events for schools & colleges, some prefer to organise their own day along the Severn Valley using our heritage steam trains. Why not picnic at one of our lovely wayside stations or enjoy an environmental studies walk between stations. Seats for school groups are reserved on our trains. Pre-booking is essential in order to benefit from these attractive discounted fares. Cost per pupil 2 to 15 years Single journey 6.50 Return journey 7.50 Cost per student 16 to 19 years Single journey 8.50 Return journey 9.50 Minimum 10 paying pupils The Engine House Visitor & Education Centre At The Engine House groups can experience, at close quarters, the sheer size of our steam locomotives, experience other railway vehicles and hear some of the exciting tales from the age of steam. The Engine House contains seven full-size steam locomotives and one with cab access. An audio-visual presentation and exhibition about the Severn Valley Railway is also available. The location provides an outdoor picnic area, café/restaurant, gift shop and railway themed play area which is very popular with children! Groups may pre-book a visit to The Engine House as part of a general day on the Severn Valley Railway. Cost per pupil 2 to 15 years 1.50 (excludes train fare) Cost per student 16 to 19 years 1.50 (excludes train fare) Minimum of 10 paying pupils Complimentary Pre Visit to conduct Risk Assessments Suitability: Teachers, classroom assistants and others who work with children This visit is available for two teachers, or other appropriate staff from your organisation. It is an ideal planning opportunity for teachers as well as providing time for risk assessments during your Freedom of the Line train travel including a visit to The Engine House. Once you have booked your event you may then complete the application form (online) and arrange your pre visit. Our Education Officer may be available to talk to you by prior arrangement. Must be booked at least two weeks in advance Cost per adult Free (maximum 2 persons) 1940s & World War II Experience at Kidderminster & Arley One week only 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th June & 1st July Suitability: Years 3-8 A very popular event with your day starting at Kidderminster where our volunteer costumed re-enactors explore a number of themes relating to life in wartime Britain including air raids and air raid shelters, the role of an ARP warden, the spiv, a soldier s life, home life etc. The children will also see a replica 1940s house complete with inhabitants! Then it s off by evacuation train to our station at Arley, right in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside, to experience a very different and peaceful environment free from the danger, fear and stress of bombing raids. The Severn Valley Railway s own re-enactors will accompany your group throughout this visit. Free identity cards and labels are provided for every pupil. Minimum 20 paying pupils We ll Meet Again at Highley Visitor & Education Centre May to July & September Monday to Thursday Suitability All age groups This very popular WWII event is designed for larger groups starting with a trip on the evacuation train to Highley. Pupils then explore a number of themes relating to life in wartime Britain including air raid shelters, home life, evacuee suitcases, firefighting and much more. Please call to discuss your specific requirements. There is also an opportunity to look around our visitor centre. Our qualified teachers will accompany your group throughout this visit. Free identity cards and labels are provided for every pupil. In addition Gas mask box ideas are included for teaching staff to use with their pupils before the visit. 4 Blitz & Evacuation Workshops at Bewdley Museum May to July & September Days TBA Bewdley Town Museum and Discover History, Blitz & Evacuation Workshops take a detailed look at life during World War II. The children have the opportunity to see and handle a range of 1940s artifacts and, after a classroom session at the museum, take part in an evacuation experience by steam train between Bewdley and Highley. This visit is escorted throughout the day by a costumed interpreter. Free identity cards and labels are provided for every pupil. In addition Gas mask box ideas are included for teaching staff to use with their pupils before the visit. Minimum 20, maximum 60, paying pupils Book through Bewdley Museum on Classroom at War at Worcestershire County Museum May to September Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday The Severn Valley Railway, together with the Education Service at Worcestershire County Museum, Hartlebury, give pupils an idea of what it was like to be at school in 1940 and to be evacuated from the city or town by train into the relative safety of the countryside. The day consists of a session in the 1940s classroom at Hartlebury, where Miss Crook rules her children with firm discipline as she prepares them for wartime life and evacuation by steam train to rural Highley. A replica identity card and identification label are provided for every child. Alternatively, you may choose start your visit from Bridgnorth travelling by train to Kidderminster where your coach will pick you to take you to the museum. You will then undertake a 1940s afternoon classroom session. Cost per pupil Minimum 20 paying pupils Book through the County Museum, Hartlebury on Make Do & Mend at Highley Visitor & Education Centre May to July & September Monday & Tuesday (other days may be available) Suitability All age groups Make Do & Mend has a particular emphasis on home life. Pupils embark on an exciting wartime evacuation experience to Highley where they will get a sense of what it was like to live during WWII. Travel by heritage steam train to Highley where our teachers will explain equipment used in a wartime kitchen and parlour. There will be emphasis on make do and mend including, rug ragging, cooking methods and rationing. You will visit our replica Anderson shelter and see a variety of wartime exhibits. There is also an opportunity to look around our visitor centre. Our qualified teachers will accompany your group throughout this visit. Free identity cards and labels are provided for every pupil. Minimum 20, maximum 45 paying pupils Life on the Home Front at Bewdley Museum May to July & September Days TBA In partnership with Bewdley Museum, and with the help of costumed staff, this new event takes an in-depth look at life on the home front during World War II. After a short train journey from the town of Kidderminster to the safety of rural Bewdley, you can find out what it felt like to be an evacuee, learn about preparations for war and visit a genuine Second World War air raid shelter in the museum grounds. You will also have the chance to play with wartime games and even make your own class skipping rope to take back to school. At the end of the war, you will be collected from Bewdley by your coach, to return to school to be reunited with your parents. 5 PACKAGE SPECIFIC TO KS1 & KS2 Journeys at Highley Visitor & Education Centre May to July & September Monday Thursday Suitability: KS1 & KS2 Take your group through a modern day journey on the Severn Valley Railway accompanied by our qualified teachers. You will be met at your start station (Kidderminster or Bridgnorth) where activities will commence and then travel by heritage steam train to Highley. River & Rail Experience in association with Bewdley Museum May to July & September On arrival at Highley Visitor and Education Centre, your pupils will take a hands on look at what might be in their suitcases, engage in role play and much more. This event will provide a unique opportunity to explore the history of the ancient river crossing of Bewdley, learn about some of its finest buildings and industrial past. This has become an extremely popular event Early booking is recommended. Following an initial train journey from Bridgnorth or Kidderminster you will be welcomed by the museum staff who accompany you throughout your day. Go Wild in the Countryside at the Severn Valley Country Park May to July & September The partnership with Shropshire Council is a superb way to involve pupils in outdoor activities whatever the weather. You cannot fail to be thrilled by the choice of topics from, pond dipping to river study, grass and woodland mini beast hunts and science. The choice is yours. Sessions at the award winning Country Park are led by the enthusiastic and experienced rangers and all equipment is provided. The emphasis is very much on hands-on learning. Groups can also make use of the spacious visitor centre. Travel by heritage steam train to and from the Country Park is included. Your journey may start at Kidderminster or Bridgnorth. 6 Junior Wild Tracks in association with West Midlands Safari Park May to September Combining an exciting journey along the Severn Valley with a trip to West Midland Safari Park, this day out will appeal to everyone. Start or finish the day with a journey by heritage steam train from Kidderminster or Bridgnorth to Highley, and experience a personal guided tour through the Safari Drive-Through, have a chance to see Penguins, friendly animal encounters, Sea lion Shows, Meerkats, Lemurs and even meet some Dinosaurs! Bespoke curriculum based activities are also available. Each Wild Track booking includes a Safari Ranger (subject to availability) who will join you on your coach give you a guided tour of the Safari Drive-Through. Minimum 10 paying pupils Christmas Cracker Expresses Many schools have found this unusual event to be a great way to celebrate the festive season as an alternative to the Christmas party! 30th November, 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th & 15th December Suitability: Foundation Year 3 Nature Inspectors at Arley Arboretum NEW FOR Starting at our station at Kidderminster, travel in the company of Father Christmas and his friends for a magical steam train journey to Highley in the heart of the Shropshire countryside. Presents for the children are included in this different seasonal experience. Cost per pupil Morning train Afternoon train May to September Monday to Sunday Minimum 10 paying pupils Where else could you visit a 200-year-old arboretum that offers orienteering, a forest school, sensory garden and activity trails. To add to this, we offer bespoke school trips where you can also be a Nature Inspector, do tree and leaf recognition, pond dipping, basket weaving and wood carving. There is also a playground and maze all surrounded by 2000 acres of park, woodlands and fields. After a train journey from Kidderminster or Bridgnorth, to Arley s own train station, take a 10-minute walk to the arboretum to be met by our staff who will issue you with all the equipment and activity sheets you group will need for the day.
