2 Please describe the types of assistance that your organization has provided to those affected by Hurricane Sandy. On what date did your organization begin work relating to Hurricane Sandy? Is your organization still conducting Hurricane Sandy related work? On what date did your organization complete work relating to Hurricane Sandy? If not yet completed, please indicate when the work is expected to conclude. Is your organization providing immediate or long-term relief? DESCRIPTION OF EFFORTS Superstorm Sandy had a particularly severe effect on low-income populations and the neighborhoods in which they live. Part of NYCCAHÆs response to this situation was to place staff from our Benefits Access department at host non-profit organizations in three of the communities most affected: Red Hook, Brooklyn; Coney Island, Brooklyn; and Rockaway Beach, Queens. The primary purpose of their work is to connect people with vital nutrition benefits for which they are eligible, primary among these being SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as food stamps. In addition, we coordinated 1,000 volunteers to work with feeding agencies affected by the storm. WeÆve established a foothold in these three communities but the demand for assistance in determining potential eligibility for SNAP and with the application process continues. We continue to provide outreach to people who are still recovering from Sandy, and to assist them in accessing not only SNAP, but other crucial nutrition assistance programs such as WIC, school / summer meals, and senior meals. These public benefits are a way for people to meet their basic needs as they rebuild their homes, and seek to return to employment - or support them during times of underemployment - and self-sufficiency. Yes 10/1/2015 Yes Phone Number x 218 Website nyccah.org Address jwengler@nyccah.org Special Instructions Please contact Director of Benefits Access, Jim Wengler.
