1 Part 1 S P E A K I N G Giving gifts When do people give gifts or presents in your country? People in my country generally give presents to others on birthdays or anniversaries, not quite unlike people in other cultures. Do you ever take a gift when you visit someone in their home? [Why/Why not?] Yes. Whenever I visit my best friend, who has three little boys, I have to buy three gifts for each one of them. Otherwise, they get jealous and fight. I have pleasant worries about what to get the little angels every time I plan to visit my friend. When did you last receive a gift? [What was it?] It was my birthday 3 weeks ago. My mother got me a digital piano, which was absolutely amazing and surprising. My husband gave me flowers, a birthday card and a bottle of perfume. They were all great. Do you enjoy looking for gifts for people? [Why/Why not?] Yes, absolutely. I imagine the faces of those who get to receive my gifts and feel so happy, but it is not always very successful. Nevertheless, I love the time when I think of my friends and family, buying something for them.

2 Part 2 Describe something you did that was new or exciting. I d like to talk to you about something new I once did before. I went snorkeling 3 years ago when I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon. My husband and I stayed on one of the islands for a week and had a lot of fun things. One day we rented snorkeling gears and headed for the beach. I was quite nervous because I had never done such water sports before. I can swim, but still it was a challenge. Before going into the water, we practiced breathing through the mouths wearing the gears. Contrary to my worries, I quickly became used to the system and started to enjoy myself. We swam around and played with those little sea creatures. It was just so much fun. I even took some pictures of my husband and me under the sea. This experience is especially memorable to me since it was the first time in my life that I looked so closely at many different kinds of fish under the water, which I had only seen in picture books or animation films. And the island and the ocean are not very forgettable.

3 Part 3 Doing new things Why do you think some people like doing new things? I guess some people who feel tired of their routine duties want to try new things at times. Most people need a break from the same things they do every day, and I am not an exception. I think my brain has been so used to what it has been doing, so I sometimes stimulate it by trying something new. I believe that it is a great way of living a more exciting life. What problems can people have when they try new activities for the first time? When people try new activities that they have never experienced before, they may face fear, anxiety, or tension. I think psychological problems are the most common when trying a new thing. New activities, in the end, will allow people to learn how to overcome such feelings. Do you think it s best to do new things on your own or with other people? Why? Personally, I feel that it is a lot better to try new things with other people who can share the same interest. It is not necessary to reveal your courage and willpower right in front of other people, but it s more enjoyable to do fun activities with those who can feel what I feel. I don t think everything should be about learning or studying. I believe having a great time with good people is always great even when I feel afraid trying a new thing.

4 Learning new things What kinds of things do children learn to do when they are very young? How important are these things? Most children begin to play with toys and friends when they are little. They learn how to deal with and resolve different kinds of conflict by spending time together with other people. This is very important since such experiences lay the foundation for their social intelligence, which is essential for them to establish successful relationships with others later in their lives. Do you think children and adults learn to do new things in the same way? How is their learning style different? Yes, I do think there is a difference. Little ones, for example, don t usually follow some instructions or manuals to learn to do something new. They tend to just jump in and struggle with difficulties when they arise, and they spontaneously work things out for themselves and remember the process in the future. On the other hand, grown-ups often rely on the information they get from some reliable sources or some sort of directions when learning what they ve never done before. Adults have a tendency to avoid any kinds of failure, which may cause them stress. Some people say that it is more important to be able to learn new things now than it was in the past. Do you agree or disagree with that? Why? I absolutely agree with the idea. It is very difficult to keep up with the rapid pace of change in this world. For example, the way to use public

5 transport; buses and trains, has changed a great deal in my country. If you don t become familiar with the revised system soon, it may be very difficult for you to live a modern life. Therefore, I believe that it is vital to get used to learning and accepting something new in this modern world.
