1 Florence Vanstone, BSW, rsw The Caregivers Journey: Awaken your Virtues When Life Unravels (Public Stream) Patient Centered Care: Embracing the Caregiver s Journey (Professional Stream) Christine ayling, BSW, rsw The Caregivers Journey: Awaken your Virtues When Life Unravels (Public Stream) Patient Centered Care: Embracing the Caregiver s Journey (Professional Stream) BSW, RSW, an Oncology and Home Care Social Worker, and member of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and Caregiver to a husband with a terminal diagnosis. Florence s passion for social work was ignited in the early 80 s as a counselor at a Women s Resource Centre in Winnipeg. She took this knowledge and experience to Northern Manitoba as a trainer, counselor and advocate for economic and social inclusion. This social worker, wife, mother and grandmother understands the need for human connection, resiliency and perseverance intimately. Florence s husband was diagnosed with advanced terminal cancer two years ago. With this experience, she has emerged able to give voice to the parallel journey that caregivers experience which at times are invisible in patient centered care. She now works with families facing similar circumstances using a strengths-based perspective to assist families in making the most of what they have learned along the way. She is a mental health Social Worker and trained as a Virtues Project facilitator in Embracing the values of this project has changed the way Christine views herself in this world and how she works with colleagues, clients, and students. The Virtues Project initiative encourages health professionals develop the language and context for fostering the qualities to be purposeful, mindful, loving, gentle, assertive, connected, compassionate, fully human, human beings. It is about the powerful connection and relationship to those around us. Christine is a wife, sister, daughter, mother, social worker, parent advocate, and singer. As Florence says we (families) all have stuff, how we get through it is what gives us character, so embrace that journey for it has gifts as well. The Caregivers Journey (Public stream) The moment you learn a loved one is terminally ill you begin navigating parallel journey that you really have little control over. Decisions will be made and your life will change in ways you never imagined. Far from the valiant platitudes, the shadow side of caregiving can be lonely, frightening and isolating. Expectations abound and pressures mount so where do you turn? This workshop will help you awaken to the virtues within, build a culture of character and create a companionizing community. Patient Centered Care: Embracing the Caregiver s Journey (Professional Stream) In a world of patient centered care, we want to invite the caregiver as part of the team and often find their input invaluable. In this workshop participants will: Begin to embrace the powerful possibilities of the teachable moments that come as a result of engaging with the caregiver/caregivee team. Develop a sense of the power of vulnerability and its ability to build a healing connection and collaborative space with the caregiver/caregivee team. Be introduced to the art of companioning, where the balance between compassion and detachment is explored providing some initial tools. Learn to create the kind of boundaries that honour the spirit and allow for the possibility that this parallel journey still holds moments of grace and joy and growth.
