The mission of Men Against Destruction Defending Against Drugs and Social Disorder MAD DADS is to bring about positive change, to seek out, encourage, motivate, and guide committed men and women in the struggle to save children, communities, and ourselves from the social ills that presently plague our neighborhoods. MAD DADS employs strategies to engage parents in the intervention and prevention of community problems, to attract, challenge and prepare them to be vocal, visible, and vigilant in restoring safe communities & healthy families.
MAD DADS operates four primary programs in high crime and low-income areas of North and South Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and St. Paul: Our Street Outreach Program works to prevent crime and violence in the community. Trained staff and volunteers reach out every day by riding buses, visiting schools and recreation centers, visiting hospitals in times of crisis, maintaining a public street presence to promote community safety and encourage individuals to sign up for support groups and take positive steps toward a better life. Through the Center for Fathering and Family Empowerment Program, in partnership with Urban Ventures, we work with incarcerated men, those leaving prison, their families and others in the community to help young men and fathers develop life skills, pursue their education, maintain sobriety from drugs and alcohol, obtain jobs, be positively involved in their children s lives, and not re-offend. Our Get Real Youth Program offers youth opportunities to interact positively with adult male role models, guiding youth toward meaningful, healthy alternatives to a life of poverty, crime and incarceration. Prevention, intervention and support efforts for youth involve working with the whole family. Through Community Building Programs, MAD DADS provides safety, security and a calming presence, promotes peaceful conflict resolution and offers alternatives to criminal and violent lifestyles for those in attendance. We offer grief and trauma support at vigils and funerals, and are present at civic activities, parades and other events. We partner with many agencies and organizations on these events, including working with health clinics to promote community health and wellness.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Terrell Mayes, who died two years ago in his home in north Minneapolis, would have turned 5 years old Monday. Mayes and his family were eating dinner, when they heard shots fired. VJ Smith of Mad Dads says, sadly, the family knew what to do. You know, at 3 years old, you look at a baby going up the stairs with a plate of spaghetti and baby knows, along with the rest of the family, to get in a safe place, Smith said. That kid is just running up the steps and that bullet goes through the stairway and kills their baby right there on that spot. Minneapolis Police have identified two groups involved, but they can t find the shooter. There s some individuals that are known to have some conflict, and why we can t find the name of that individual, he said. He said there is a $60,000 reward on the line and still no information. Any time that you can put out $60,000 on information on who killed a baby and you get nothing nothing that can lead to the conviction of an individual it s really sad, he said. People really want these criminals off the street.
Our Get Real Youth Program offers youth opportunities to interact positively with adult male role models, guiding youth toward meaningful, healthy alternatives to a life of poverty, crime and incarceration. Prevention, intervention and support efforts for youth involve working with the whole family. Michael Jefferson Michael Jefferson grew up on the North Side of Minneapolis in a pretty bad neighborhood. He grew up in the 80 s with the beginning of the crack epidemic and the rise of hip-hop in the urban community. Raised in a single-parent household, Michael was very close to his mother. However, at a very young age (somewhere around kindergarten) Michael began to act out. He was kicked off of the school bus for fighting with other students. He was sternly disciplined by his mother when he got home in a way that might not be deemed acceptable by today s parenting standards. Michael was also known in his neighborhood to associate with a specific group of likeminded individuals (gangs) that went around acting up on a regular basis. In fact, during high school, he was taken to County Home School for roughly 3 months before being sent to Red Wing for an additional 4 months. He later went to prison twice, the last time for 6 years. After his release and while working with his probation officer in 2013, Michael met members of the MADDADS Outreach Team. Michael was immediately interested in working with MADDADS and started volunteering by cleaning the office. After volunteering for a full year, he was finally employed at MADDADS and now is an Outreach Team Supervisor for our MNsure Program after only 15 months. Michael also mentors youth who are in some of the same situations he used to be in. He works with our GET REAL YOUTH MENTORSHIP programs to intervene and deter youth from crime and violence. He is a leader amongst staff and in his community. He exclaims that his life would be drastically different if he did not encounter the Minneapolis MADDADS. He says that the way he looks at and responds to situations has changed dramatically. He has made a conscious decision to avoid going back to prison and to turn his life around. Michael has run into some obstacles with past associates and trying not to fall into old habits. He still has friends that are making poor decisions. He has expressed frustration in trying to convince some of his former associates to do better. He says that sometimes it seems to do him more harm than it does them good. He says that he just doesn t know where he would be if it wasn t for MADDADS because he wouldn t have the support network around him to encourage him to continue changing for the better. People at MADDADS don t see it that way. They see a strong, determined man that sacrifices himself to help others, including family, friends and coworkers, be better by encouraging them to make better decisions and by leading by example.
Men Against Destruction-Defending Against Drugs and Social Disorder (MAD DADS, Inc.) has been dedicated to addressing the problems of drugs, gangs and violence, restoring our communities and deterring youth from a life of violence and destruction since Operating in high crime and low-income areas of North and South Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and St. Paul, the Minneapolis Chapter of MAD DADS works to keep our communities safe and strong. MAD DADS works bring about positive change, to seek out, encourage, motivate, and guide committed men and women in the struggle to save children, communities, and ourselves from the social ills that presently plague our neighborhoods. Through four primary programs Street Outreach, Fathering and Men s Empowerment, Get Real Youth and Community Building MAD DADS employs strategies to engage parents in the intervention and prevention of community problems, and to attract, challenge and prepare them to be vocal, visible, and vigilant in restoring safe communities and healthy families. MAD DADS succeeds where other neighborhood crime prevention programs have failed because we provide realistic, tangible hope through effective programming. We work to reduce neighborhood gang activity and crime; provide positive role models and mentors for youth; promote African American male leadership, responsibility, and self-sufficiency; support vulnerable seniors; increase neighborhood safety; and educate, nurture and guide our children to make positive decisions, stay in school and grow into successful community leaders.
