3 Want to give a restoration a more dramatic or characterized look? Think tint. Need to block out darkness from the back of the mouth or mask tetracycline stains? Choose an opaquer. While it sounds easy, using these types of materials is anything but. Overuse of tints and/or opaquers can make a restoration look worse than not using them at all. The proper combination of restorative materials can eliminate the need for these materials in all but a small percentage of cases. Tints Intense colors that typically are used to impart character to a restoration. For example, a brown tint can be used to mimic craze lines in enamel while blue and/or gray tints can simulate incisal translucency. On the other hand, translucent composites can be placed in a scalloped form in the incisal area to simulate natural translucency instead of resorting to blue and gray tints, which can turn out to be too intense and appear artificial. Opaquers Dentin-shaded resins with enhanced opacity for blocking out shine-through in through-and-through restorations or masking dark teeth during placement of direct veneers. However, a relatively opaque hybrid composite can block shine-through quite well without the intensity of an opaquer. This eliminates the possibility that the opaquer itself will shine through the overlying composite. USE Apply with brushes, keeping the layer as thin as possible. Always cover them with a layer of microfill or hybrid they neither last nor look good on the external surface of a restoration. It is much more natural to build color within just as creative ceramists have been doing with porcelain for many years. It is also possible to modify the color of composites or resin cements with either of these product categories by mixing them with the composite or resin cement. This use, however, is only necessary in very few instances. Since these materials are not used frequently, we feel it is prudent to buy one complete kit that includes both tints and opaquers and learn to use it. When a manufacturer markets a separate tint and opaquer kit, we have combined the two products under one ranking. Opaquers Vita shades (A1/B1/LO, A2/A2., A3, A3., A4/A, B2, B3/B4, C1/D2, C2/C3, C4, and D3/D4), plus White and Pink. The Vita shades match the Vita shade guide very closely except for A1, which is somewhat darker than its Vita shade tab. The white is a true white, while the pink is a light pink and very opaque. It would be good for blocking out the blue-gray stains of tetracycline. Opaquers are particularly effective in covering up stains or exposed metal during repairs of ceramometal crowns (more chroma than Creative Color), while the tints have high chroma, so less material is needed for the desired effect. The white is a true white. LEAST FLOW Packaging All 11 bottles are lined up in single file in a cardboard box, with the caps faced down and stabilized by polyurethane. This upside down storage means dispensing should be easy, but bottles still need to be squeezed hard to express the material. We prefer syringes for easier dispensing and inventory control; it is impossible to know how much material is left in a bottle. The labels are color-coded to make selection fast and easy; the expiration dates are imprinted on the moisture-resistant labels as well as on a label on the box. The shade is merely printing in a white area on the label, which is moistureresistant and includes the expiration date that is also on the outside of the hard plastic case. There is also a syringe of clear resin to mix with any of the colors to tone down the intensity. In addition, there is a product called Glass, which is a lightly filled clear resin that can presumably be used as a glaze. Tetrapaque 4 Enamel Off white. Dentin Medium beige. Labels on push-type syringes are not moisture-resistant and don t contain the expiration date. Although the color-coded band near the finger rest helps differentiate the shades, there is no difference between Cerinate and TetraPaque syringes. 9 REALITY Creative Color has a wide range of Vita opaquers combined with its realistic tints, syringe delivery, and an excellent technique manual. The tints tend to be very subtle it s difficult to go overboard with this product (honey yellow is a particular favorite of many evaluators), but the dark brown is not dark enough if you want to stain posterior grooves. The opaquers have medium opacity, which is good when you are just trying to block out shine-through, but they are not intense enough to mask metal when repairing a ceramometal crown. The pink opaque is more opaque than the others, but the pink hue is quite muted. It s probably your best bet in neutralizing the blue-gray discoloration of tetracycline. Kolor+ Plus has a good selection of very effective natural tints (brown is very opaque much more so than other shades and works well when staining posterior grooves) and very opaque opaquers (probably the best for masking metals and very dark teeth, although there is not much difference between A1 and A3). They are easy to use and create very natural effects. However, the tints are quite intense use them sparingly. We don t, however, like the bottles. Shade Modification Kit is a versatile kit with the most common shades you will probably need with the tints, which have an acceptable level of translucency/opacity. The opaquers have an opacity similar to Creative Color, which means they are not overly intense but probably won t be able to cover very dark areas or exposed metal in a thin layer. They have a nice consistency and apply easily. Shade Modification II by Cerinate is merely a rebadged Rembrandt kit with a new name, but the contents are exactly the same. It is one of the original tint/opaquing kits and remains a good product when it is used correctly. All components come in tuberculinlike syringes for easy dispensing. However, there is still a dual-cure catalyst for Tetrapaque, although we re not sure when this would be needed. The shades vary quite significantly in opacity, so your applications will have to be modified depending on the shade you are using. Most of the shades are nonrunny.
