1 1 Fall Apple Unit Lesson Plan 3 Ann Deaner Level Pre-Kindergarten Objectives: The student will: 1. count with the teacher from 0-10 as teacher holds up large counting cards 2. participate in sequencing 10 flannel board apples and the corresponding numerals that match 3. listen to the book, Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins 4. understand the terms: count on, the correct sequence, empty set, taking away, and adding on 5. practice and demonstrate the knowledge of recognizing and matching numbers 0-10, and counting on to match a set to the correct corresponding numeral by playing a computer game Kindergarten VA SOL s that are supported: Mathematics: Number and Number Sense K.1 The student, given two sets containing 10 or fewer concrete items, will identify and describe one set as having more, fewer, or the same number of members as the other set, using the concept of one-to-one correspondence. K.2 The student, given a set containing 10 or fewer concrete items, will a) Tell how many are in the set by counting the number of items orally; b) Select the corresponding numeral from a given set; and c) Write the numeral to tell how many are in the set.
2 2 Computation and Estimation K.6 The student will add and subtract whole numbers, using up to 10 concrete items. Technology Scope and Sequence Introduced in Kindergarten and Supported in Pre-Kindergarten: Students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate responsible use of technology equipment 2. Identify- keyboard, mouse, microphone, digital camera, scanner, printer, monitor, icons, and letter and number keys. Flannel board with flannel board apples and numerals Book- Ten Red Apples by Pat Huchins- Copyrighted 2000 Published by SCHOLASTIC Computer software game Millie s Math House by Edmark 4. Apple Tree Counting Box copyrighted by Lakeshore Learning Inc. Lesson Grade Level Pre-Kindergarten Management- Direct Instruction- (Whole Group) - Story Time and Game minutes List of Activities:

Students will rote count together as teacher holds up large number cards Students will help teacher sequence flannel board apples and the numerals that match (children will take turns choosing each other for this activity) 3. Students will listen to the book, Ten Red Apples 4. Teacher will read the story and take away apples from the flannel board as the story progresses. Teacher will use the terms set and less. 5. At the end of the story, teacher will add on apples from zero to ten. Teacher will discuss the terms more, less, and empty set. Management- Interactive Instruction and Independent Study Work Centers and Small Group Instruction minutes List of Activities: 1. Teacher will call two students to the computer to work on The Number Machine which is part of the program Millie s Math House. 2. Students will take turns identifying and matching numbers that are identical. They will count on and match a set of animal critters to the corresponding selected numerals they matched. Each pair of students will play the game for 8-10 minutes until all the students have played. 3. Teacher will observe and assess student understanding and will help direct the students when necessary
4 4 4. Teaching assistant will work with small groups of students (4-6) using the Apple Tree Counting Box. This activity will reinforce the skills of recognizing numerals and matching a set of concrete objects to the corresponding number Extensions: 1.
