3 Process for storage and checking of resuscitation equipment 1. Ensure the location of resuscitation equipment is clearly marked and staff know where the resuscitation equipment is stored and how to access it. a. Please use page 6 of this document as required, this page shows the international sign for a defibrillator and has space to write where equipment is stored. 2. Resuscitation equipment will need a DOCUMENTED DAILY CHECK please check sheet on page 7 & 8 3. If equipment is missing, opened or out of date please reorder the most common resuscitation equipment codes are on page 4 & 5 of this document 4. Ensure an incident report is completed if resuscitation equipment has been used on a person and ensure the equipment is replaced in a timely manner. 4 key points from the medical emergency and resuscitation policy with particular reference to resuscitation equipment (Reference No: SH CP 30) via trust intranet policies section: me=/sh_cp_30_-_medical_emergencies_and_resuscitation_policy_v2.pdf 1. The Trust will take all reasonable steps to provide the initial first aid response for medical emergencies and in all instances refer for subsequent specialist treatment and care 2. All resuscitation equipment must be maintained in a state of readiness at all times and allow speedy access. 3. The team manager of each in-patient unit will delegate a registered nurse or mental health practitioner to be responsible for checking and recording the resuscitation equipment by a member of staff who is deemed competent to do so on a daily basis and immediately following conclusion of a resuscitation event. 4. Individual staff working in a clinical area s duties and responsibilities are: Reading the policy and being familiar with the procedure for initiation of resuscitation or emergency treatment and the location of relevant equipment, including medical emergency drugs, within their working area. Accessing agreed training as required ensuring their competence is current. 6 th September 2016 Page 3 of 18

Checking the AED AED (with battery inserted) 2 Sets of sealed in date Adult defibrillator pads 1 - Check status indicator OK displayed in top right hand corner 2 Check expiry date of quick combo defibrillation pads and that they are unopened 3 Check Pads are plugged in 4 Check ECG cable and ECG electrodes are present and unopened 6 Check expiry date of ECG electrodes ONLY open quick combo pads when needed for patient care. If the packaging is opened the pads will dry out and then they will not stick to the patient s chest. 15 HeartStart MRx Guidance sheet PLEASE USE THIS GUIDANCE PACK TO ASSIST IN THE ROUTINE CHECKING OF YOUR DEVICE To perform the System Check: 1. Disconnect HeartStart MRx from the mains. 2. Switch energy select to Press 4. Press down arrow to Other then 5. Select Operational check Press 6. Acknowledge Press 7. Connect and attach Test load 6 th September 2016 Page 15 of 18
16 8. Follow on screen instructions Whilst it does it s check (this may take a minute) 9. Press charge button when prompted 10. Deliver Shock when prompted (Device will inform you that shock has been delivered via audible warning) 11. Device will prompt Did you hear it? Acknowledge yes (or no) with 12. Wait for print out (Tear off and store in folder) 13. Exit op (bottom left hand corner) Press the button below. 14. Turn dial to off position 15. Disconnect test load and store 16. Turn mains supply back on. 17. Confirm top right hand corner is displaying Black hourglass 6 th September 2016 Page 16 of 18
17 HeartStart XL Guidance sheet PLEASE USE THIS GUIDANCE PACK TO ASSIST IN THE ROUTINE CHECKING OF YOUR DEVICE Using Pads To perform the System Check using multifunction defib electrode pads: 18. Turn the HeartStart XL off. 19. Connect a 50 ohm test load (see pictures below) to the pads patient cable (instead of pads). 3. If a Data Card is routinely used, insert a Data Card into the HeartStart XL. 4. Unplug the AC power cord. 5. Insert a charged battery. (Battery needs to be in date and already in place). Pic 1. Battery compartment Pic 2. Battery eject button Pic 3. Battery 6. While pressing STRIP BUTTON (see picture below), turn the Energy Select knob to either Manual On or AED On to start the test. 7. Follow the prompts on the display to proceed with the test. If the message Service Unit appears, do not use the device, and call for service. 6 th September 2016 Page 17 of 18
18 8. Reconnect the HeartStart XL to AC power. The test takes less than a minute to complete. When it is done, a report is printed, as shown below. 6 th September 2016 Page 18 of 18
