Lesson 1.1 Personality Profiles By Carone Fitness Nurture vs. Nature We all have different personalities. Part of our personality is determined by genetics (what we are born with), and part of our personality is developed by how we are raised and the physical and social conditions around us. Evaluating what kind of personality you have can be very helpful in understanding your likes and dislikes, and why you do the things you do. Evaluating the personalities of others can also help us understand their needs and actions. 1

Personality Tests There are many different systems available for personality profiling or helping us define our personalities. These profiles list key traits that help you evaluate what kind of personality you have. Two of the most common personality tests that we will be discussing in this lesson are the Color Code and Myers- Briggs. Color Code In 1987 Dr. Taylor Hartman wrote a best-selling book titled, The Color Code: A New Way to See Yourself, Your Relationships, and Life. This book introduced a personality theory stating that most personalities fit into one of four profiles based on one s motivations in life. Each of these profiles relates directly to a color: red, yellow, white, and blue. 2

Personality Tests Although you may have traits of each of the color profiles, chances are you are more dominant in one or two colors. Keep in mind that just as we all have positive and negative traits, so do each of these color categories. Red Red Reds are power-people! They like to be in charge. They are self-motivated and like to get things done. They are generally good decisionmakers and very assertive. Reds can sometimes be a little bossy. 3

Yellow Yellow Yellows are party people! They enjoy being social and doing things just for fun. They are generally happy, outgoing, enthusiastic, and spontaneous. Yellows sometimes have difficulty getting their heads out of the clouds. Blue Blue Blues are good friends! They enjoy connecting with people on a personal level. They are sincere and can be trusted in a friendship. To blues, the quality of friends is more important than the quantity of friends. Blues tend to be perfectionists and will sometimes do anything just to be accepted. 4

White White Whites are peacemakers! They avoid conflict at all costs. They are very accepting of others, good listeners, kind, and flexible. Because whites avoid conflict, they sometimes aren t assertive enough to say what they really want. Myers-Briggs The Myers-Briggs Personality Theory was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers. According to Myers, Whatever the circumstances of your life, the understanding of type can make your perceptions clearer, your judgments sounder, and your life closer to your heart's desire." ( 5

Color Code This personality theory is based on eight different characteristics, or four pairs. Although, again, each person may have traits of each of these characteristics, they are more likely to be stronger in one of the characteristics of each pair than the other. Extraversion - Introversion Sensing - Intuition Thinking - Feeling Judging - Perceiving Take a look at the following descriptions and think about which characteristic from each pair best represents your personality. Extraversion-Introversion Extraversion Introversion (E or I) This pair of characteristics refers to where one gets his/her energy. Extraverts are very outgoing. They gain energy from the people around them. An introvert is someone who focuses inward. This person gains energy from internal thought and reflection. Would you consider yourself more of an Extravert or Introvert (E or I)? 6

Sensing-Intuition Sensing Intuition (S or N) This pair of characteristics refers to how information is perceived. Sensing means that knowledge is deduced by witnessing it directly from the outside world using one s senses. Intuition means that knowledge is deduced by internal reasoning and logic. Would you consider yourself Sensing or Intuition? (S or N) Thinking-Feeling Thinking Feeling (T or F) This pair of characteristics refers to how someone processes information. Thinking means a person mainly relies on logic to guide his/her decisions. Feeling means that a person mainly uses feelings and emotions to make decisions. Would you consider yourself Thinking or Feeling? (T or F) 7

Judging-Perceiving Judging-Perceiving (J or P) This pair of characteristics refers to how information is used. Judging means that one plans things out carefully and then follows through on those plans. This person is very organized. Perceiving people are more spontaneous. They are flexible in their plans or often change plans or seek alternatives. Would you consider yourself Judging or Perceiving? (J or P) Awareness Being aware of personality types can help you to understand your own needs, motivations, and actions, as well as those of others. With this understanding it becomes easier to communicate and create compromises. For instance, if you are a P and your mom is a J, she may want you to do your jobs immediately after school as planned. However, you may want to wait and see what your friends are doing. 8

Awareness By knowing your mom s personality, it is easier for you to understand that she expects things to be done as planned. Knowing this can help you compromise with her to make other plans for instance, doing your jobs at a different time, but still committing to a time to get them done. Conclusion In addition, understanding your personality type can help you: Understand how you are similar to and unique from friends and family members Better understand the viewpoints of people with different personalities Reach a compromise among people with different viewpoints Decide what types of extracurricular activities you want to participate in Decide what types of careers might suit you best 9
