1 Following is an excerpt from a letter that I wrote to someone about the history and use of drums. I thought it could be helpful for others who are looking for information about drums and music. As I mention at the end of this letter I would highly recommend the videos by Brian Newman and Ivor Meyers on Music. The Ivor Meyers video can be watched on audioverse.org. Click this link: I wanted to talk to you about drums. I love music and I have also worked in Media Production for several years and I have learned quite a bit about music. I just wanted to share with you briefly some of the things I have learned about music and drums in particular and how music affects human beings. I have especially looked into drums because they are a controversial issue. First I'll share a little of what I have found out about drums and then some about my personal experience with music. Most of the drum beats and rythms that we have in America originated with the voodoo priests in Africa. When the slaves were brought to Haiti they brought their religions with them and it became mixed with the Catholic religion and the result was named Voodoo. After the slave revolt in Haiti the slaves brought their music and their voodoo practices to New Orleans, Lousianna. They were only allowed to practice their voodoo rituals in one spot in New Orleans, called Congo Square. The drums play the central part in the voodoo religion. The drums are used to bring the spirits of the gods into the people. You can read about all this in the encyclopedias and other places on the Internet. Basically it is through the rythm and beat of the drums that the people become demon pocessed. This is known as 1 / 5

2 the "crossroads" by the voodoo worshippers. The drums beat in very complex rythms until just the right rythm is found that will bring the god into the person. Then the person becomes pocessed by the spirit of the god. Many times these rituals are accompanied by terrible sexual practices. There are different drum rythms that are named after different gods. There is the Mambo, the Samba, the Congo, etc. Each of these drum beats are named after the demon that is induced by the drum rythm. The voodoo drummers can hypnotize people and put people into trances by using different drum rythms. The deep rythmical sound of the drums particularily arouses the sexual parts of people's brains. And the scary thing is that music bypasses to a great extent the reasoning part of our brains and goes straight to our emotional center. In other words, music can control us whether we like it or not. This information is easy to find with a little bit of research. Look in the encyclopedias and other places like that about the voodoo religion and the history of the various styles of music. From New Orleans the voodoo music took on many varied forms and spread all across America. Almost all our modern music has it's roots in the voodoo music that came out of New Orleans. The drum rythms in modern music are just varied forms of the voodoo drum rythms from New Orleans. I have an audio recording of an interview with a modern music group who have personally studied under voodoo drum masters in order to learn their drum techniques. Their music was very popular a few years ago. And of course the drums have now found their way into the Christian Churches of America as well. The drum beats are very much the same, although they may be quieter. That's one of the reasons I am very uncomfortable with drums in music, whether it is recorded or live. 3 mention something that happened to my counsin. His parents didn't want him to listen to rock music, but he got ahold of one CD and there was one song he really liked and he would listen to it over and over. One night his parents heard noises in his room. They came in and found my cousin in his closet about to hang himself. They took him and laid him on the couch. He was in a trance! He couldn't talk and his body was rigid and he couldn't move. Finally, after awhile he was able to motion for a pen and paper and he wrote down all that had happened, how he had been listening to this song over and over and how this had happened to him. Music is powerful and the devil knows how to use it! The modern music puts people into trances just like the voodoo music did! I'm sorry, this is getting long. I was just going to write something short. I'll only say a little bit more. As I mentioned before I have worked in Media Production for several years now, and in studying how to use music in videos I have come to learn a lot about the power of music. Music is the language of emotion. A movie producer can control the feelings of his audience by the kind of music he puts with a movie. (By the way, I don't make movies like Hollywood and I am very careful what kind of music I use.) A movie producer can make hundreds of people feel sad, angry, spooked, sexually aroused, etc. just by using different kinds of background music in his movie. Music truly does control people! We see this in the Bible too. What did Nebucadnezzar do when he wanted to get everyone to bow down and worship his great image? He played music! What will be used to get people to worship the image to the beast at the end? Music? Music is powerful! And we as Christians are greatly ignorant of it. Satan is wiley and he is stealing our young people by using music! And he starts in the church! The music in the church is a quieter version of the music in the world (with different words), and our young people are getting a taste for the music of the world by hearing the music in church. I know a girl who used to listen to worldly music before she became a Christian and she said that living in the islands and hearing the drums in the music at church started to arouse the old desire for worldly music again. 4 whenever they start playing music like that in church. If it does that to one person I'm sure it has the same effect on others. Well, there is so much more. I have quotes from music stars, scientific studies about the effect of drums on people, quotes from books and encyclopedias, and so much more. But I don't want to make this any longer. I also have two really good videos about music if you would like to see them. One is by Bryan Newman who used to be in the music industry, and the other is by Ivor Myers, who used to be a rap artist. They are very well researched and show the way satan is using music to control people and especially how he is using it to capture young people. The drum rythms of the world have come into the church and if we think they won't have any effect on us because the words are different we are wrong. The words of a song have very little to do with the emotions that are created by the rythm and beat of the music. A movie producer doesn't need background music with words. Words would just get in the way! The music itself is what creates the emotions. And drums don't need to be loud to arouse the sexual parts of our brains. Some of the most sexually oriented music in our world today, like R&B, does not have loud drums in it. Drums have an effect even when they are played softly. So I wanted to talk to you about this and see if you, or whoever is in charge, might want to consider not having the drums in the worship service at church, including the music from the computer or CDs.
