1 SECTION 1365 PRE-ENGINEERED METAL BUILDINGS PART GENERAL 1.01 SCOPE OF WORK: A. WORK INCLUDED: The Contractor shall furnish all necessary labor, materials, equipment and services to furnish and erect pre-engineered metal buildings as indicated on the drawings and described herein. Work under this Section includes but is not necessarily limited to the following: 1. Pre-engineered structural framework (rigid frames and portal frames). 2. Wall framing and girts. 3. Roof framing and purlins. 4. Exterior roof panels. 5. Exterior metal wall panels. 6. Gutters and downspouts at pre-engineered metal building. 7. Standard accessories and trim for pre-engineered metal buildings including eave trim, ridge trim, door trim, corner trim etc. 8. Insulation for pre-engineered metal buildings. 9. Prefabricated pipe flashings around mechanical pipes and flues. 10. ¾ Thermal spacing blocks at roof purlins. B. RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE: 1. Concrete Slabs and Foundations - Section Reinforcing Steel - Section Caulking - Section APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS: A. CODES: All work specified under this Section shall comply with the following codes: 1. North Carolina State Building Code. 2. Local codes. 3. "Code of Welding in Building Construction", AWS D1.1 - Revised 1-76, of the American Welding Society (AWS). B. OSHA: All work specified under this Section shall comply with applicable requirements of the William-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act
2 C. STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS: All work specified under this Section shall conform to the requirements of the following standard specifications: 1.03 QUALIFICATIONS: 1. "Specification for Structural Steel Buildings" of the American Institute of Steel Construction, New York, N.Y. (referred to herein as AISC) dated June 1, "Specifications for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members", of AISI, latest edition. 3. "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts" as approved by the Research Council on Structural Connections of the Engineering Foundation, November 13, 1985 and endorsed by the AISC. 4. All pre-engineered metal building components shall be fabricated and erected in accordance with the manufacturer's standard specifications except where more stringent requirements are set forth in these specifications. 5. FM Global Data Sheet 1-31 Metal Roof Systems. 6. FM Global Standing/Lap Seam Roof Coverings Construction Standards for I-60 wind loads. A. QUALIFICATIONS OF WORKMEN: 1.04 SUBMITTALS: 1. All workmen and their supervisors engaged in the fabrication and erection of pre-engineered metal building shall be employees of a current member of the Metal Building Manufacturer's Association or a factory authorized erector. 2. As a manufactured product, the design, detailing, fabrication and erection of pre-engineered metal buildings shall be performed by or under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer who is a permanent full-time employee of the manufacturer of the pre-engineered metal buildings. 3. Pre-engineered metal building shall be erected by the manufacturer or by a factory authorized and licensed erection subcontractor. A. SHOP DRAWINGS: The manufacturer shall prepare complete shop and erection drawings for pre-engineered metal buildings. Shop drawings shall indicate size, weight or gauge, spacing and elevation of all members; type and location of all shop and field connections; and type, size, extent and sequence of all welding. Welding symbols shall be those adopted by the American Welding Society. Any field welds shall be indicated and fully described on shop drawings. Shop drawings shall include all information needed for the erection of the component parts of the structure. Shop drawings shall be
3 submitted to the Engineer for review and approval in accordance with Section The Engineer's review of shop drawings will be for compliance with general design requirements and arrangement of members. The Engineer's review and approval of shop drawings will not relieve the manufacturer of his responsibility for the design and strength of pre-engineered metal building components and their connections, correctness of dimensions shown on shop drawings and general fit-up of parts to be erected. Shop drawings shall include adequately dimensioned anchor bolt setting plans. Shop drawings shall be accompanied by complete design calculations with design loads and design criteria. Shop drawings and design calculations shall be signed and sealed by a Registered Professional Engineer permanently employed by the manufacturer. B. COLOR CHARTS: Color charts shall be submitted to the Engineer in accordance with Section 0130 for selection of panel and trim colors. C. WELDING CERTIFICATES: Certificates of qualifications of all welders, tackers and welding operators issued within the previous 12 months by an agency acceptable to the Engineer shall be furnished to the Engineer for all such personnel performing field welding on pre-engineered metal building. Submit in accordance with Section D. CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE: Certificate of compliance with project drawings and specifications shall be submitted to the Engineer in accordance with Section E. WARRANTIES: Submit written warranties required by these specifications to the Engineer in accordance with Section PRODUCT HANDLING: A. PROTECTION: 1. All necessary means shall be used to protect materials specified under this Section from damage before, during and after installation. 2. The work of other trades shall be adequately protected from damage resulting from work specified under this Section. B. STORAGE AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS: 1. The Contractor shall exercise care in unloading, storing and erecting pre-engineered building components to prevent damage to material and shop finish. All steel shall be stored a minimum of four (4) inches above ground on adequate supports. Material shall be kept free from dirt, grease and other foreign matter. Clean steel of all dirt, grease and foreign matter prior to erection
4 2. Framing material shall be stored in such a manner that water will shed off material with no pockets for accumulation. 3. Panels, insulation and trim shall be stored under watertight coverings at least four (4) inches above ground on adequate supports. C. REPLACEMENTS: 1. In the event of damage to materials or work in place, all necessary repairs and replacements shall be immediately made to the satisfaction of the Engineer at no additional cost to the Owner. 2. Damaged material shall be repaired or replaced at the option of the Engineer. 3. Any rejected material shall be immediately removed from the jobsite and replaced by new material at no additional cost to the Owner ACCEPTANCE AND TOLERANCES: A. Work failing to comply with any part of these specifications will be subject to rejection by the Engineer. B. Bent or disfigured components will not be accepted. C. Insulation with torn facing material will not be accepted at exposed locations within the finished structure CERTIFICATION: The pre-engineered metal building manufacturer shall issue a letter of certification typed on his letterhead certifying that the design, fabrication and erection of pre-engineered metal buildings comply with the approved shop drawings and these specifications. This letter shall be signed and sealed by a Registered Professional Engineer licensed in the state of North Carolina WARRANTY: A. Pre-engineered metal buildings shall be warranted in writing against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year from date of final acceptance of project. B. Wall panel finish shall be warranted in writing against the following from date of shipment as listed below: 1. Chalking in excess of ASTM D659, No. 8 rating - 5 years. 2. Fading more than 5 NBS units - 10 years. 3. Cracking, checking, blistering, peeling, flaking, chipping or lose of adhesive - 10 years. C. Roof panels shall be warranted in writing against perforation due to corrosion
5 for a period of twenty (20) years from date of shipment. The total potential liability of this warranty shall be equal to the original installed value of the roof panels. D. Pre-engineered metal building roof shall be warranted in writing for weathertightness for a period of ten years from date of shipment. The total potential liability of this warranty shall be 25 percent of the original installed value of work under this Section. PART PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS: A. ALL MATERIALS: All materials incorporated in pre-engineered metal buildings shall be as manufactured by one of the following or approved equal: 1. American Buildings Company, Eufala, AL. 2. Ceco Building Systems, Columbus, MS. 3. VP Buildings, Inc., Memphis, TN. B. PRE-ENGINEERED METAL BUILDING: Pre-engineered metal building shall be configured as follows. 1. General: Structural system shall be a rigid frame with tapered columns and a monslope roof. Structure shall be provided with all necessary bracing taking into consideration all openings on the project drawings. Both ends of the structure shall be framed with rigid frames and nonexpandable endwalls. 2. Roof Slope: Roof slope shall be as follows: 1 on Height of Structure: The building area shall have an eave height of 20 0 at low side. C. PRIMARY FRAMING STEEL: 1. Steel for mill-rolled structural sections shall conform to the requirements of ASTM specification A 36 or ASTM A 572 Grade 50 as applicable. 2. Steel for all built-up sections shall meet as applicable the physical and chemical properties of: a. ASTM A 572 Grade 50 with a minimum yield of 55,000 psi, or ASTM A 607, Grade 55, or ASTM A 570, Grade 55. b. ASTM A 572, Grade 50 or ASTM A 607, Grade 50 or ASTM A 570, Grade Steel for all endwall "C" sections shall meet the physical and
6 chemical properties of ASTM A 570, Grade 55. D. SECONDARY FRAMING STEEL: 1. Steel used to form purlins, girts, eave struts and "C" sections shall meet the physical and chemical properties of ASTM A 570, Grade 55. E. ROOF AND WALL PANEL MATERIAL: Exterior panels shall conform to the following: 1. Panel material as specified shall be G-90 zinc-coated (galvanized) steel, conforming to the requirement of ASTM A 653, Grade 50. Minimum yield strength shall be 50,000 psi. F. ROOF PANELS: Roof panels shall be two (2) inch deep, 24 gauge standing seam, flat profile panels having a sixteen (16) inch coverage width and continuously sealed side laps and end laps. Seams between panels shall be lock seam type with a 360 degree rolled seam edge. Roof panels shall be continuous without splices to the greatest extend possible using the manufacturer s maximum lengths. G. WALL PANELS: Wall panels shall be three (3) inch deep, 24 gauge architectural shadow panels having a sixteen (16) inch coverage width and deep fluted profiles. Panels shall have 1-1/2 inch +/- deep x 6 inch wide ribs. Panels shall be sealed at base with metal closures and fastened with concealed fasteners. H. THERMAL BLOCKS: Rigid foam thermal blocks shall be cut from extruded polystyrene board and 3/4 inch thick. Insulation board shall have a UL 25 flame spread rating. I. ACCESSORIES AND TRIM: Accessories and trim shall be fabricated from 26 gauge (minimum) G90 hot dipped galvanized steel having factory applied finish. Accessories and trim shall include the following items: 1. Contour eave trim with preformed rubber weatherseals. 2. Contour gable trim. 3. Gutters and downspouts. 4. Fascia and soffit trim. 5. Preformed corner closures. 6. Preformed closures to fill panel corrugations prior to installation of eave and gable trim. 7. Door, window, and other openings subframing and trim. 8. Other trim and accessories necessary for a neat and finished structure
7 9. Prefabricated roof flashings around mechanical pipes and flues CONNECTIONS: A. SHOP CONNECTIONS: Shop connections shall be welded or bolted with high strength bolts. B. FIELD CONNECTIONS: Field connections shall be bolted with high strength bolts except where field welded connections are specifically required by the approved shop drawings. C. BOLTED CONNECTIONS: Bolted connections shall be made with high strength bolts (ASTM A325). High strength bolted connections shall be designed as bearing type connections with threads in shear plane. Hardened washers shall be installed over short slotted holes in an outer ply. Anchor bolts shall conform to ASTM A307. D. WALL PANEL CONNECTIONS TO STRUCTURAL FRAMING: Wall panel connections to structural framing shall be made with corrosion proof hexagon head screws having integral washers. Provide color caps to match panel color at all exposed fasteners. E. ROOF PANEL CONNECTIONS TO STRUCTURAL FRAMING: Roof panel connections to structural framing shall be made with standing seam clips. F. PANEL TO PANEL CONNECTIONS: Panel to panel connections shall be made with corrosion-proof self tapping screws or standing seam panel clips as required FABRICATION: A. All structural framing members shall be factory fabricated as required for proper fit without field modifications. B. Roof panels shall have a hot dipped coating of AZ-55 aluminum-zinc alloy. C. Wall panels shall have a G90 hot dipped galvanized coating. D. Trim shall be fabricated to prevent ponding water. Trim shall be free of waves, ripples and other surface irregularities FINISHES: A. STEEL STRUCTURE: All elements of steel structure shall be cleaned of all
8 foreign matter and loose mill scale and coated with a one (1) mil coating of red oxide primer conforming to the requirements of Specification SSPC 15-68T. B. ROOF PANELS: Base metal shall be AZ55 aluminum - zinc alloy coated steel. Panels shall be coated with an epoxy primer and a Long Life exterior coat. C. WALL PANELS: Base metal shall be G90 hot dipped galvanized steel. Panels shall be coated with an epoxy primer and a Long Life exterior coat DESIGN CRITERIA: A. Pre-engineered metal building shall be designed for all loads and loading conditions set forth in the North Carolina State Building Code except where exceeded below. No reductions in live load shall be considered. B. Structures shall be designed for a uniform collateral load of five (5) pounds per square foot plus additional dead loads indicated on the drawings such as suspended piping, HVAC equipment, etc. C. Pre-engineered metal building system and components shall be FM Global approved and designed in accordance with FM Global requirements. PART EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION OF SURFACES: A. Before commencing pre-engineered metal building erection, the Contractor shall check all governing measurements and elevations of all construction upon which proper erection is dependent. Any discrepancies shall be corrected before erection is started. Discrepancies shall be brought to the attention of the Engineer in writing. B. Check all anchor bolts for proper placement and projection prior to commencing pre-engineered metal building erection. Report any discrepancies to the Engineer in writing INSTALLATION AND WORKMANSHIP: A. GENERAL: All work shall be installed and erected in strict accordance with the pre-engineered metal building manufacturer's standard details and approved shop drawings
9 B. ERECTION: 1. Erect all pre-engineered metal buildings in accordance with the requirements of applicable codes, approved shop drawings, manufacturer's specifications and standard specifications listed hereinbefore. 2. Hardened washers shall be used on all high strength bolts. 3. Orient all high strength bolts in each connection in same direction. 4. Bolt tightening of high strength bolts shall be performed using calibrated wrenches. 5. Align roof panel ribs on opposite sides of building ridge line. C. SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING: 1. Wall panels and roof panels shall not be installed on the steel frame until the frame is plumb, at proper elevation and the connections completed, tested, and finally reviewed by the Engineer. D. TOUCH-UP PAINTING: 1. After testing and inspection, all bolt heads, welds, member marks, abrasions and other areas lacking shop coat of paint shall be neatly touch-up painted with same type and color paint as used for shop coat. Any and all areas where shop paint is peeling or scaling shall be sand blasted, cleaned, and repainted with specified primer in field prior to finish painting. 2. Welds shall be cleaned of all slag with a chipping hammer and/or wire brush to a bright condition prior to touch-up painting. All rust shall be removed prior to application of touch-up paint to any area. E. FIELD ADJUSTMENTS: 1. Field correcting of fabrication by flame cutting shall not be permitted on any member in the structure without the approval of the Engineer. The use of burned holes for bolted connections will under no circumstances be accepted. Violation of this paragraph will be sufficient cause for rejection of altered members. 2. No field adjustments other than normal drifting and reaming shall be made without prior consent and approval of the Engineer
10 3.03 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL: A. FIELD TESTING: 1. An independent testing laboratory acceptable to the Engineer shall be employed by the Contractor to perform the following: a. Qualification of field high strength bolting procedures, field welding procedures and associated personnel. b. Testing of high strength bolt tension. c. Visual inspection of all field welds in accordance with Section 6, Article 605, of the AWS Code. 2. At least one bolt in each high strength bolted connection having four bolts or more shall be checked for proper bolt tension by the testing laboratory. At least one bolt in one-third of all high strength bolted connections having less than four bolts shall be checked for proper bolt tension by the testing laboratory. If test bolt tension is not proper, all bolts in that connection shall be checked for improper bolt tension. If more than five (5) percent of connections checked have improper bolt tension, all high strength bolts shall be checked for proper tension on the entire project. B. INSPECTION: 1. The Engineer shall be notified and given an opportunity to inspect the completely erected steel frame prior to installation of roof panels or wall panels. 2. The Contractor shall afford the Engineer whatever casual labor, platforms, ladders or other access as may be required for proper field review of the work. Such field review shall not relieve the Contractor of his responsibility to furnish materials and workmanship in accordance with the drawings and specifications
