Dissertation: Randomness and Legitimacy in Selecting Democratic Representatives. Abstract: Incorporating random selection into our arsenal of methods for choosing political officials would enhance performance towards norms of representative democracy. I employ historical and analytic methods to explore sortition and its relation to equality, rationality, and representation, giving chapter-length treatment to each. The final chapter offers, as illustrative possibilities for constitutional design, institutional arrangements that would deliver lottery's benefits while addressing the challenges it presents.
