2 EdgeWare UI (User Interface) The EdgeWare OS contains an easy to use utility client that finds EdgeWare servers on the network and allows web-based management through secure access (HTTPS). Journaling System EdgeWare OS gives users the choice of 3 journaling systems that are optimized for customer applications and provide data reliability and redundancy. This feature includes ext3, reiserfs, jfs, and xfs. Windows Directory This feature conveniently allows administrators to use information about users, systems, and other resources stored in Active Directories, Windows NT 4.0 Legacy domain, and Windows Storage Server Access Control List The Access Control List (ACL) allows administrators to restrict user rights and access policies through the network. The ACL feature is convenient for file share administration and remote network management. LDAP Client EdgeWare OS allows user and group authentication to an LDAP server for all network services and even the web-based administration. This allows EdgeWare servers to coexist in an existing LDAP management scheme. NIS NIS provides ease of management to information stored on other EdgeWare OS servers that are configured using NIS. NIS is a UNIX network naming administration system that allows users at any hosts to access files or applications on any host with a single user identification and password.

3 LDAP Server EdgeWare OS uses Simple Object Access Control (SOAP) to leverage standard management formats (XML) and protocols (HTTPS) to configure multiple servers. Network Gateway Access With remote management, EdgeWare OS can manage multiple NAS. This provides accessibility to manage large terabyte volumes of data stored in Enterprise networks. DHCP DHCP is one of many standard protocols supported by EdgeWare OS. With DHCP, administrators can expedite the process of providing IP address to devices connected to the local network. NIC Support EdgeWare OS has the capacity to support two or more network cards to access separate subnetworks. Standard support for Fibre Optic and Copper Media network interface cards (NIC) is also provided. Share File Level Permissions Secured Administration Access (SAS) is offered through multiple administration features that include: share level and file level permissions, NT and 2000 ACLs, SSL, HTTPS, SSH, local server user, Windows 2000 and 2003 Active Directory Services (ADS). NIC Binding With NIC binding, the bandwidth of two NIC cards can be aggregated and converted into one, increasing the data transfer capacity and speed. (800)

4 IP Failover With IP failover, two servers can share the same virtual IP address. If one server malfunctions, then the other server picks up the network activity. Backup Software EdgeWare OS includes its own utility backup management and supports Multiple backup clients that include: ComputerAssociates Brightstor ARCserve, Bakbone, and CommVault s Galaxy. Asynchronous Mirroring (Replication) Asynchronous Mirroring (replication) allows any system to be a repository for another system, backing up its data according to specified schedule. Edgeware OS synchronizes only the changed data reducing the network bandwidth requirements. The replication can occur within an encrypted TCP or UDP tunnel making it possible to replicate over the internet safely. Synchronous Mirroring With synchronous mirroring, EdgeWare OS allows block device replication of logical volumes (consider RAID1 over the network). With this configuration, data written to one volume is replicated in real-time onto another volume. This allows network failover between two systems, where two volumes are mirrored, to provide some of the best redundancy possible. Snapshot The EdgeWare OS snapshot feature, gives users the ability to capture data from a point-in-time and has the functionality to aggregate multiple snapshots sequentially which can be used for backup or data retrieval purposes.

Logical Volume Groups (LVM) The Logical Volume Manager (LVM) feature allows administrators to export volumes from iscsi or FibreChannel connectivity. Then, the exported volumes are collected and distributed as one logical volume group. Logical volume management for block storage allocation is also offered. Logical Volume Expansion Expansion of the logical volume is allowed without restarting any applications, recreating the volume, or backing up the existing data. EdgeWare OS policy engine allows volume limit settings to automatically trigger a volume expansion if space is available. Management Levels EdgeWare OS allows administrators to set predefined management levels to users. With this feature, administrators can assign users ACL management and set fire-ground ACLs for that group. Unlike other storage operating systems that offer pre-configured management levels, EdgeWare OS gives administrators the liberty to configure management levels to their preference. Disk Quotas The user disk useage feature can be monitored by allocating users specified storage quotas. EdgeWare OS supports user disk space quotas for Windows, UNIX, Linux and Macintosh. In addition, it also administers group disk space quotas for UNIX/Linux. (800)

6 Root Control Service (RCS) EdgeWare OS offers Root Control Service (RCS) to the operating system. With RCS, the administrator can add or remove modules, restrict IP access control, create local users and groups, Windows domain user groups, NIS domain users, and LDAP users and groups. For security purposes, EdgeWare OS grants access to the UNIX shell command only through SSL/TLS Network Protocols Supported network transfer protocols include: DHCP, WINS Server, Dual Fast Ethernet Ports, Gigabit Ethernet Support, IP over Fibre Channel support, Failover, TCP/IP Offload Engine Support, FibreChannel Support, and Network Interface Card (NIC) Bonding. Multiple network file protocols are supported in windows, UNIX, and MAC environments that include: CIFS, AppleTalk, RSYNC, FTP, and HTTP. Network Support EdgeWare OS supports Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, XP, Storage Server 2003, Linux, Unix, and Apple. For security support, the following features are included: Kerberos authentication v5, CHAP Authentication (iscsi target level), and transport layer security (TLS) v1 UPS Monitoring UPS monitoring can be done by direct attachment or by serial port. An impending warning by the UPS can then lead the system to take appropriate action based on EdgeWare OS policy engine. The system can also shutdown to avoid any journaling replays or potential corruption issues to abrupt hardware power loss. UPS Network Broadcast EdgeWare OS can monitor network broadcasts of a UPS with network connectivity. By monitoring these network broadcasts, EdgeWare OS can submit alerts via its policy engine based on predetermined action(s). The system can also shutdown to avoid any journaling replays or potential corruption issues to abrupt hardware power loss.

7 Console Configuration Console tools can be configured to manage each module depending upon the administrator s access level. EdgeWare OS console tool configuration can be done via ACLs for the appropriate console access per user or group. Notification The advanced monitor system of EdgeWare OS notifies system administrators health disk status, number of drives in the server, system temperature, RAID status, and spare drives. Additionally, EdgeWare OS forecasts when a hard disk is about to fail. Log and System Function The log function consists of EdgeWare Actions and System Logs. With EdgeWare Actions, administrators can track user activity by all registered users, by a specified user, and by level of administration. It can also track module activity that include all the modules or a specified modules. EdgeWare Action also offers tracking logs by time line, which includes events for the day, between specified times, and at any given time. System logs can be viewed and configured through the user interface or by remote log setup. Logs can be assigned to multiple volumes and can be copied immediately, hourly, or in a daily. These logs provide a wealth of information to technical support for troubleshooting. Hardware RAID and IDE Support EdgeWare OS offers RAID 0, 1, 5, and 6 that is optimized to work with AMCC 3ware RAID controllers and with brand name manufacturers. In addition, EdgeWare OS supports the use of IDE drives, SATA drives, and SCSI drives plugged into the system motherboard. (800)

8 iscsi (Initiator and Target) With iscsi, EdgeWare OS has the ability to mirror data using its iscsi target and initiator protocols capabilities. The iscsi initiator talks to the iscsi target as if it were directly attached even though both the initiator and target could be in remote locations. EdgeWare OS supports multi-path initiators so that the iscsi targets located on multiple systems can accept the same data without a reduction in performance using Gigabit connectivity. EdgeWare OS also includes error level recovery 0, 1, and 2 (lpsan). Storage Virtualization The storage management features of EdgeWare OS allow the integration of multiple logical volumes that can be seen as one large volume throughout the network. This large volume can be administered from a centralized system. Security EdgeWare OS can be updated with signed Red Hat Packages (RPMs) and network updates can be turned off. Local updates can be done by an administrator through a USB disk-on-key or USB CD-ROM. System administrators can also turn off running software to remove unused components and users require authentication protocols through an encrypted channel (HTTPS). Protection against possible security compromises is provided by verifying the change and signature of the system software. The system software signature can be stored on a read-only media after download to secure it against possible attack. Overview The EdgeWare tm OS is a specialized Linux-based 64-Bit network storage operating system that is designed to manage high terabyte volumes while still providing crucial speeds for data transfers.
