2 OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERABLE WALL SYSTEMS MODELS: MODERNFOLD / SOUNDMASTER Safety Precautions Soundmaster Extend or close the partition using either handles or pendant pulls Raise all footbolts before moving partitions Do not move the partition rapidly or stop suddenly Do not allow pendant pulls to swing freely. After use, steady and release them Always be sure the partition s path is free of obstructions before operation Do not attempt to extend the partition if the ceiling track or its support appears broken or bent, or if the floor area beneath the partition is buckled or broken Operating Instructions Step 1: Clear Path of Obstructions Before moving the partitions, make sure the path is free of all obstructions like tables, chairs, carts and extension cords or other electrical cables. Also check for open doors, loose carpet or flooring or any fixtures such as track lighting that may interfere with movement of the partitions. Step 2: Extending the Partition with Pendant Pulls Extending Partition with Pendant Pulls Using the pendant pulls: Stand under the track, facing the lead post of the partition. Grip the pendant pulls and walk backwards, pulling the partition with the pendants. After the partition is extended, secure it for sound seal against the jamb. CAUTION: Be careful not to get your hands, clothing or anything else caught between the partition and another partition, jamb or fixed wall. 1

3 Extending Partition without Pendant Pulls Without pendant pulls: Stand under the track and using both hands, grip the handles on the partition and slowly walk backwards. Once the partition is extended, latch it manually into the jamb. If the partition is paired, pull both sides to the center and push them together. The latch will automatically engage. CAUTION: Be careful not to get your hands, clothing or anything else caught between the partition and another partition, jamb or fixed wall. Step 3: Final Closure The final closure is secured by a latch mechanism located at the grip handles. On taller partitions, a second pull-in latch mechanism is located nearer the top of the post. On taller partitions, to engage the top latch first, pull up on the pendant pulls to extend the pull-in latch hook. Then guide the pull-in latch hook into the pull-in latch strike plate. After the pull-in hook engages the strike plate, pull down on the pendant pull to draw the lead post tight into the jamb. The lower latch mechanism is engaged by applying a slight pressure on the hand grip toward the jamb or paired partition. CAUTION: Be careful not to get your hands, clothing or anything else between the partition and another partition, jamb or fixed wall. Step 4: Stacking the Partition 2

4 Stacking Partition with Pendant Pulls Using the pendant pulls: Release the hand-high grip latch by pushing the thumb button at the top of the handle. Disengage the pull-in latch at the top of the partition by lifting up on one of the pendant pulls and pushing the partition away from the jamb. Once both latches are released, separate the partition from the wall (or its paired partition), step directly under the track facing the track facing the lead post and, using both hands, slowly push the partition back. Stacking Partition without Pendant Pulls Without pendant pulls: Release the hand-high grip latch by pushing the thumb button at the top of the handle. Once the latch is disengaged, take the center hand grips and open the partition slightly. Step directly under the track facing the lead post and, using both hands, slowly push the partition back. 3

5 Step 5: Operating Footbolts Bolt Type Footbolts There are two commonly used footbolts that are available on the partitions. The first of the two is the Bolt Type Footbolt. It is used in conjunction with a strike located in the floor. To operate, extend the partition to its proper location and lower the foot bolt in the down position to lock. Friction Type Footbolts The second of the two is the Friction Type Footbolt. The friction type footbolt does not require a floor strike. As with the bolt type, extend the partition to its proper location and lower the footbolt in the down position to lock. 4

6 Step 6: Joined Partition Sections Spliced Partitions Only Spliced partitions are joined by a series of #59 latches. They are operated by using a hex wrench specially provided for that purpose. To operate a #59 latch, remove the plug button located on the side of the post and insert the hex wrench and rotate counter clockwise to disengage. All #59 latches must be disengaged before the partition can be opened. To engage the #59 latch, pull both the #59 post and its receiver post into alignment. Using the hex wrench provided, rotate the wrench clockwise until the latch is secure. NOTE: If the #59 latch fails to secure, rotate the wrench counter clockwise to its stops to reseat the latch. #59 latches must be reseated to operate properly. 5

7 CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE Clean Partitions Regular cleaning of the partition will help keep it looking new and alert you to damage. The following guidelines will help with most common cleaning situations. Heavily soiled surfaces may require professional services. As with other furniture, fabrics or carpets, any cleaning method should be tested in an inconspicuous area before general use on the partition surfaces. For vinyl, clean with a mild liquid household detergent. Rubbing alcohol will remove most ball-point pen marks. For carpet or fabric surfaces, use a stiff brush and vacuum cleaner, being careful not to fuzz the finish. Mild household detergent and water may help remove stubborn spots. Test any commercial cleaners or spot removers in an inconspicuous place. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaning solution on vinyl. Clean and Lubricate Track Your local Modernfold Distributor has the proper tools and knowledge to perform track maintenance. Track should be cleaned and inspected every 18 months. Use a cloth or rag dampened with mineral spirits to thoroughly clean the inside surfaces of the entire track layout. After cleaning apply a light coat of petroleum jelly to the entire surface on which the carriers run. Do not use spray or silicone based lubricants. After the first and third years, check the track for proper leveling and readjust as necessary. This is particularly important on long spans, as truss deflections generally show up within the first three years. Check Top Sweep Contact Surfaces Annually check all soffits and surfaces in contact with the top sweeps for wear or rough spots. Should the top sweep no longer come in contact with the soffit, your local Modernfold Distributor can properly adjust the partition to bring the sweep back into position. For proper adjustment contact your local Modernfold Distributor. Inspect Partitions The partitions should be periodically checked for damage and repaired as necessary. Every 18 months inspect and tighten all partition screws (located in molding on the end of the lead post, the top and bottom of each handle). If adjustments or repairs are required, contact your local Modernfold Distributor. 6
