1 LESSON #6 FOUR FACULTIES Topic, class, and level How can we improve our community?, Writing/SS, 2 nd grade Essential Question(s): To what important concept, enduring understanding, or big idea in the discipline does this lesson connect? Standards: MA, Common Core, WIDA or other Standards for this lesson or unit: - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.8: Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.2: Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. - NSCG.V.D: Students should be able to explain why certain responsibilities are important to themselves and their family, community, state, and nation. Knowledge/Understandings: What should the students know and understand at the end of this lesson? - Students will understand that good citizens contribute to their community. - Students will know what it means to volunteer and be charitable in the community. - Students will be able to define volunteer and charity. Skills: What will the students be able to do when this lesson is over? - Students will be able to recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. - Students will be able to recount or describe key ideas or details from the Kid President video. - Students will be able to explain why certain responsibilities are important to themselves and their family, community, state, and nation. - Students will be able to give examples of real people in the community who are good leaders and good citizens and explain the qualities that make them admirable. Assessment. (How will you check for student achievement and understanding?) - Were students able to recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question? - Were students able to recount or describe key ideas or details from the Kid President video? - Were students able to explain why certain responsibilities are important to themselves and their family, community, state, and nation? - Were students able to give examples of real people in the community who are good leaders and good citizens and explain the qualities that make them admirable?
2 Instructional Approach (Describe activities, allotted time, and closure) Materials and/or on-line resources to be used Poster paper - Person templates Hook What question or activity might spark student curiosity and motivation? - Teacher will show the above YouTube video to the class (Kid President How to Change the World [a work in progress]). o Personality/Behavior students will immediately relate to Kid President because he talks and acts like they do - Turn and talk with your partner about Kid President s main idea in this video. - Ask students to share their ideas: What do you think Kid President is trying to tell us in this video? - Each one of us is an important person in our community because we can do things to improve our community. - Today we are going to talk about how we can make our community a better place. Activities What question/s might encourage the student to explore and discover the content? - Students and teacher will discuss the idea that anyone can change the world, regardless of their age, status, celebrity, etc. o Awareness students will be aware of the fact that they are not just kids, but humans, from a broader perspective - Boys and girls, I don t know about you, but changing the world seems like a pretty big job. But we can start small by changing our community first. o Feeling/Knowing makes the content more immediately relatable to students they are very cognizant and knowledgeable of their community - We can change our communities by being good citizens. A citizen is a person that lives in a community. A good citizen is a person in a community who works to make the community better. o Thinking/Understanding defining citizens - What are some ways that we can be good citizens in our community? - Teacher will write student-generated ideas on the board, prompting for more ideas as needed. ( Have you ever? ) As teacher writes, students will indicate if this is something that they have done, using the me too signal. o Feeling/Knowing activates memories of past experiences - Each student will receive a paper person cutout. - I want each of you to think of one way that you have contributed to our community in the past. Maybe you donated a toy to a kid who didn t have any toys. Maybe you helped your parents volunteer at a homeless shelter or a community center. Come up with one way that you have donated your time, money, or items in the past and write it on the top half of your good citizen. o Feeling/Knowing relates to students personal experiences with community service and being a good citizen
3 - Next, I want each of you to think of one way that you can contribute to the community in the future. Maybe you liked something we talked about in class today, or maybe something we talked about made you think of another way that you can contribute to the community. Write that idea on the bottom half of your good citizen. o Thinking/Understanding causes students to apply what they already know about being a good citizen to generating new ideas - When you re done with both of those, come show me. If there s extra time, turn your good citizen over and draw yourself as a good citizen. Differentiation including SEI Considerations (key vocabulary, language/content objectives, etc.) Sentence starters on the people cutouts will help ELLs/students on IEPs generate ideas Grouping: If you are grouping at some point during the lesson, why are you grouping? How are you grouping? N/A Sponge activity (to soak up extra time) Students who finish early will draw themselves as a good citizen, as described above. Homework when appropriate N/A Wrap-up - What did we learn today about how we can improve our community? Potential Pitfalls and Reflection: What difficulties can you predict (or discovered as you taught) that your students may find difficult or have misconceptions about? How will you address those confusions? Students may struggle to understand how they can have an impact on their community since they are only elementary schoolers. I think that the Kid President video will help them see that even a young person (like Kid President) can achieve great things, whether it be becoming famous on YouTube or planting a tree in your community. Hearing this idea coming from a kid instead of coming from an adult will make it more relatable and hopefully, more believable. Four Faculties Reflection
4 Reflection on Four Faculties Many students do not realize that they make significant contributions to the community in their daily lives. In this part of the lesson, I wanted to engage the students Feeling/Knowing faculty in order to help them make connections to the content and remember their personal experiences with improving their communities. In the good citizen activity, students use their Feeling/Knowing faculty to think about their personal experiences and translate them into to writing about their ability to be a good citizen. The video shown as a hook into the lesson engages the students faculty of Personality/Behavior because Kid President is just that a kid. The students will relate to him because he talks and acts just like they do while presenting important educational information. Indeed, while showing the video, the kids were very engaged, and enjoyed mimicking his actions and his words after we watched it. Additionally, in showing the video, I was trying to encourage the kids to experience their own Awareness of themselves. I wanted them to see themselves simply as people, instead of categorizing themselves as kids, young, etc. By being aware of the fact that they are just as human as anyone else, they can think about how they can change the world regardless of their age or ability. Finally, the second half of the activity engages their Thinking/Understanding faculty in asking the students to come up with a way that they can make the community even better. By asking them to take what we had talked about in the lesson and generate new ways, related to those we discussed, that they could help improve the community, students are exhibiting understanding of the concepts.
