1 Davis School District Environmental Maintenance Services Roofing /Flooring Apprenticeship Requirements: Apprenticeship Program period begins when employee is hired into an approved apprentice position within the Environmental Maintenance Services Department of the Davis School District. Exceptions include: On the job training and education for apprentices hired from outside the school district can be approved by the internal committee upon receipt of verification from previous employer(s). The internal committee will notify employee of decision regarding time approved. On the job training credit earned as a laborer must be specific to trade being considered for Journeyman status and cannot exceed 12 months. Complete no less than four years as a successful apprentice, gain experience and knowledge in areas 1 through 11 under Required On the Job Training. Complete required total hours of Approved Classroom Training and Seminars. Become familiar with District Code of Ethics and Classified Agreement. Upon completion apply to department committee for review of credentials. Submit form outlining length of time worked, and duties performed. Submit letters of reference from supervisors, confirming specific experience and time worked. Receive notification by committee of acceptance of application. Complete oral/written exam. Description of Duties: Repairs emergency roof leaks. Performs preventative maintenance on roofs throughout the District. Replaces damaged sections of roofs. Installs roofing on new buildings and additions built by Small Capital Outlay. Repairs and maintains rain gutters and downspouts. Waterproofs floors and foundations. Repairs floor tile and rubber base throughout the District. Installs rubber base in new portable units. Installs snow guard on new portable units. Performs small asbestos removal projects. Installs new wood and metal roof curbs and roof jacks. Installs new vinyl floor tile and entry matting. Assists in installation of epoxy flooring. Weighs snow on roofs during winter months and assists with snow removal. Performs sheet metal work. Supervises part time employees as assigned by the assistant foreman. Assists other departments in emergency situations.

2 Required On The Job Training: Yearly Hours Required/4 Yrs 1. Perform walk over and quick inspection of roofs Make repairs such as splitting that occurs in old patches and other worn areas. Cover areas where gravel has blown back. Repair flashing broken or in need of paint. Check skylight domes for cracks. Check coolers for leaks. Clean debris from around roof drains and remaining roof area. Determine which areas need work performed. Perform necessary preventative maintenance. Use tools and materials on jobsites in accordance with safety practices: Chipping bar, brooms, shovels, trowels, torches, plastic cement, cotton fabric, rolls of torch, down material. 2. Respond to emergency roof leaks as quickly as possible. Determine where water is coming from under the deck. Locate problem area on top of the roof membrane. Prepare area and install proper material to stop the leak. Complete work as practical under any/all weather conditions. 3. Perform major roof repair including build up roofs, single ply, metal roofs, shingled, and torch down roofs. Determined need for repair by past history of problem areas. Measure area to certain dimension and clear of all gravel and debris down to felt. Fit material to be torched down to felts. Cover all bad areas. Complete process during most favorable weather conditions. Safely use chipping bar, brooms, shovels, wheelbarrow, utility knife, trowels, tape measure, torch, rolls of torch down material, plastic cement and cotton fabric. 4. Prepare for and perform foundation and cement floor waterproofing projects. Clean all debris and dirt from foundation down to footing in order to reach a clean surface to adhere water proofing material to. Apply waterproofing material and felt in number of layers as required by job. Install protective board over area to prepare for back filling. Safely use tools and materials as required to complete work such as: brushes, brooms, rollers, trowels, utility knife, tape measure, shovels, scraping tools, chalk line, level, plastic cement, cotton fabric, tar paper, Celetex. 2

3 Required On the Job Training: (Cont d) Yearly Hours Required/4 Yrs 5. Evaluate and schedule re-roofing of portable units Based on past history of problem roof. Remove metal and all trim. Clear plywood deck of all debris and renail. Dry in deck with ice and water shield and tar paper. Install drip metal. Lay out and screw down metal roofing material. Screw down trim and metal cap with foam strips in place. Safely use tools and materials such as: metal deck and trim, ice and water shield, plywood, tar paper, chalk line, nails, screws, sticky tape, foam strips, hammers, screw guns, tape measures, and skil saw. 6. Perform installation of new shingles. Replace damaged and/or missing shingles. Dry in roof deck with tarpaper or ice and water shield. Cut and install drip metal around perimeter. Start and gage shingles to proper measurements. Cut around vent pipes or mechanical equipment coming through the roof and seal properly. Cut and install ridge cap. Safely perform duties using shingle nails, simplex nails, drip edge, ice and water shield, tar paper, various types of shingles, hatchet, utility knife, tape measure, plastic cement, roof jacks, trowels, drills, skil saw. 7. Install new wooden/metal roof curbs and roof jacks Safely use all required tools and materials. Prepare roof for installation of coolers, vents, skylights and other rooftop penetrations. 8. Install new vinyl flooring. Checks for floor moisture content. Preps floor by filling in all cracks and lines with proper floor patches. Measure floor and chalk the lines to find starting point. Glue up floor using proper adhesives. Install floor tile, making the needed cuts around permanent objects. Perform these duties safely using trowel, scraper, utility knife, level, tile cutter, hand torch, tape measure, straight edge, square, floor tile, adhesive, and floor patch. 3

4 Required On the Job Training: (Cont d) Yearly Hours Required/4 Yrs 9. Repair and replace loose and broken floor tiles. Remove all loose and broken floor tile. Determine cause of problem. Make needed repairs on sub floor. Install same floor tile back into place or the best match available. Safely use required tools; trowel, scraper, chalk line, level, utility knife, tile cutter, hand torch, tape measure, straight edge, floor tile, adhesives and floor patch. 10. Remove and install entrance matting. Remove old entrance matting, clean surface, patch with proper floor patch material. Measure and mark out surface to best fit the material. Glue up surface and material with proper adhesive. Install material and cut around all objects to create best fit. Safely perform duties using required tools and materials; utility knife, tape measure, straight edge, chalk line, paint brush, floor scrapers, tear off shovels, broom, entrance matting, reducer strips, contact cement, floor patch. 11. Install, repair and replace stair tread and floor tile Remove old stair treads or floor tile nosings. Clean steps of old adhesives and repair broken or chipped surfaces with proper material. Measure and cut each stair tread and riser to fit the step. Glue up each step starting at the bottom, one at a time. Install the tread and riser, working to the top of the steps. Add reinforcing epoxy nosing compound on the tread for added strength. Safely use required materials and tools; hammer, scrapers, chalk line, utility knife, putty knives, brushes, trowels, stair tread, adhesives, risers, epoxy nosing compound, bondo and silicone caulk. Total
