3 SMS Probe Overview Description SMS Probe helps to ensure Service Quality by measuring the availability and performance of Short Message Services from a customer s point-of-view. Approach SMS Probe simulates a customer using SMS over the air and collects userexperienced service metrics on a regular basis. These metrics are forwarded to HP SiteScope or HP Business Availability Center for SLA compliance assurance, alarm generation in case of service degradation and reporting.* Customers Mobile network operators, MVNOs, service providers and system manufacturers. * Apart from HP SiteScope, also HP Business Process Monitor (BPM) can be used as collector for BAC. 8 Measurement Overview What happens when a SM is sent from Server 1 to Server 2? Server 1 sends the SM via a GSM/UMTS network to the receiver terminal via the SMSC. It records the time stamp of transmission start and the transmission time and reports these data and a status code to the Probe Client. Server 2 receives the SM. It records the time stamp and reports these data and a status code to the Probe Client. Optional: Server 2 compares the content of the received SM with prerecorded content elements. 10 Measurement Overview Metrics The metrics calculated by SMS Probe: Value Name Type Unit Description Availability Long - Availability of the service, can be 0 or 1 RTT Double sec Round trip time of the test message (time elapsed between message delivery started and message retrieval ended) Send Time Double sec Time required for the send request to be executed. This is the time the modem takes to execute the AT command to send the message. Transfer Time Double sec Time the message is in transfer, i.e. the time between completion of sending and completion of receiving. 20 SMS Probe Use-Cases The objective of this section is to give some application examples of SMS Probe. The presentation uses different setups to illustrate the flexibility of SMS probe. The number of modems which can be connected to a single host is limited by available COM ports and system configuration. Each modem requires one managing instance of the SMS Probe server. Probe servers are connected to SiteScope system via IP VPN or Internet. SMS Probe 1 at location A sends SM to SMSC, addressed to probe at location B. This emulates a user sending a SM to another user on a different network (step 1). Short message is received by SMSC and forwarded to SMSC of operator B (step 2). SMS Probe 2 receives short message from SMSC (step 3). SMS Probe 2 reports test results to SiteScope. 28 Use-Case: SMS Query (2/2) GSM Modem is connected to SiteScope system running SMS Probe Probe is sending SM with predefined text (configurable during probe setup) to content provider service via SMSC. CP service is addressed by MSISDN (configurable). This emulates a user sending a SM to CP, requesting a certain service (e.g. information service) (1). SMSC forwards request CP service (2). CP will deliver answer including requested content. SMSC sends answer SM back to Probe (3). SMSC transforms SM into an Internet Mail in MIME format and forwards it to SMTP Server (2). 33 Other scenarios? The scenarios currently supported with BAC/BSM integration via SiteScope are depicted in major uses cases by this presentation. BAC/BSM integration via BPM allows for much more options for implementing combined scenarios including SMS, USSD, Voice and SIM SAT application services. However, ADVENAGE may provide customers with customized solutions by using SMS, USSD, Voice and SIM SAT application services in any combination.
