1 Sand Separation & Filtration Batteries with automatic backflush Mode of Operation: Raw water flows through the inlet manifold and is distributed tangentially into the 2 Sand Separator. The tangential inlet causes centrifugal forces, which in turn cause separation of the heavy sand particles from the water, throwing the sand particles toward the walls of the Sand Separator, where the particles settle down to the sand manifold. The clean water flows up through the Sand Separator outlet through 2 x 2 backflush valves into the check filter inlet and then through the filtration element to the outlet manifolds for consumer use. Backflush Mode: 1. The controller transmits a backflush pulse (per differential pressure or time). 2. The electrical pulse is transmitted to the solenoid sending a pressure pulse to the hydraulic valves: backflush & sand coollector draining valve. 3. The first backflush signal is transmitted to the sand collector s draining valve. This valve opens and then, from the collector, releases the sandy water to the drain. 4. At this stage, Filter No. 1 is backflushed with clean water supplied from the outlet manifold after being filtered by the other filters in the system and rids itself of contaminated water. Impurities flow out via the drain manifold. 5. On completion of the allotted backflushing time (about 20 seconds), the controller releases the backflush pulse via the solenoid, draining the pressure from the backflush valve. Filter No. 1 returns to the filtration stage. 6. Backflushing proceeds to Filter No. 2, and so on to all the other filters in the system, with intervals of a few seconds between each filter.

2 Mode of Operation 1. Battery Installation a. Pay careful attention that the inlet and outlet are correctly installed (see arrows on the manifold). b. Connect backflush waste line to the drain. 2. Arkal s Backflush Triggering Strategy Arkal s backflush triggering strategy is a combination of the pressure differential control mechanism with time control back-up for increased reliability of the system. The first triggering criteria to be met will activate the backflushing process. 3. Control System Installation a. Refer to the manufacturer s handbook before installing the controller. b. Ensure that the voltage of unit solenoids and controller are correct. (all solar units must have latching solenoids). c. Check if the P/D switch hydraulic HIGH and LOW pressure lines are connected to the correct ports and that the HIGH pressure line is connected to the correct port on the gauge. d. Stainless Steel units require grounding to earth. Important note: Batteries are operated on P/D. The filter must be protected by this device, at all times, other than for testing purposes. e. Set the controller to a 20 second flush and 10 second dwell. These settings may require changing to suit local watering conditions. Typically, a back-up time of 3 4 hour intervals between backflush is recommended.

3 4. Start-up Operation a. It is recommended that upon system startup the water be directly flushed out of the system through the drain, as initially there is an extremely high sand concentration. b. A command filter must be kept clean at all times. This can be done while the system is in operation. First, close the command filter valve. Pressure will be released, allowing the filter cover to be opened for maintenance. c. Check the backflush process before starting the system. Manually flush each filter element by rotating the set screw, on the solenoid, one quarter turn. Flush for 20 seconds while observing the operation. The first backflush order needs to flush the sand collector. d. When the filter load up during start-up: Close the flow downstream. Cycle flush until clean. Do not release flows downstream until the filter discs are clean. Slowly reopen flows to the downstream. If pressure differential (P) remains high: High P can be a result of loaded filter or of excessive flow rate. 1. Check the hydraulic pipe lines to make sure that they are connected to outlets on the manifold (HIGH or LOW). 2. Check flow meter for either high or low flow. e. Isolate some units in the battery by closing their isolation valves to get about 20 m 3 /h (90 gpm) per each unit in operation. f. Set the pressure differential gage to activate the backflush at about 5 meter (7 psi).

4 System Maintenance WEEKLY ALSO CHECK Operate a backflush process, making sure that all backflush stages are functioning. Immediately after the backflush process finishes, read the P on the check filters. If the P is higher than 4 meters (6 psi) then it is time to manually clean the filters.* Leakage Backflush controller Clean command Filter Solenoids Backflush valves Pressure downstream SEASONAL Open all of the filtration units to insure good cleaning of the discs (if there is any residue in the grooves of the discs, dip into acid) * Manual Cleaning of Check Filters 1. Close the inlet of water to the battery. 2. Release pressure through the pressure sand collector drain. 3. Open the filter cover, remove detachable spine and clean the discs. 4. Return the filter element and close the filter cover. 5. Repeat these instructions to clean the next filter. 6. Close sand collector drain valve. 7. Reopen the water supply to the battery. WINTERIZATION release all the water from the filtration and command systems (leave the valves open).
