Energynet High-Definition Power System Simulation Network Voltage and Power Quality NEW POWER TECHNOLOGIES January,
Energynet Enterprise software suite for power network management Provides high-definition grid visibility to maximize power network performance and augment smart grid initiatives. Validated power network model integrating transmission and distribution Regional scope with device-level granularity Derived with software from as-is legacy utility data Web-based application platform 2
230 kv CAISO Transmission Hobby System Energynet Simulation 115 kv Local Transmission 1,000 square miles 280,000 customers (meters) 3
Hobby System Energynet Simulation 1,000 square miles 56 substations 246 circuits 45,916 customer service transformers 4
Conclusions Energynet Power System Simulations SVP SCE Hobby System (246-feeder system) SCE Mountain System (200-feeder system) SMUD (750-feeder system) PG&E LAHFT (5-feeder system; West Bay) PG&E Regional/High-penetration PV (50-feeder system; San Joaquin Valley) Every location in every network is different (you might not be average ). Network-wide, high-definition visibility reveals conditions at each node... and how network elements interact and affect reliability and power quality. 5
Circuit-level Reliability Assessment Typical SAIDI: ~1h/yr 6
Factors Affecting Feeder Outage* Vulnerability Feeder length/size (more ways to fail) Topology (more ways to serve load under contingency conditions) Loading of adjacent circuits (opportunity to roll load under contingency conditions) Not circuit loading. Not automated switching. * (Sustained outages, not necessarily momentary outages) 7

Wholesale PV Projects Steady State Voltage Impacts 4% voltage rise at W7 and W8 projects point of interconnection in distribution feeder. No voltage change at substation or further out feeder. As-found With PV projects added Four projects: Two feeder-connected, two substationconnected; total 46,000 kw 15
Network Voltage Variability and Power Quality High or low delivery voltage pushes more events outside the curve. 16
Network Voltage Improvement Low-voltage Buses 17
Network Voltage Improvement Low-voltage Buses After Top 1000 DG Additions Optimized controls and a few ideally-placed resources can mitigate low voltage. 18

Energynet Benefits for Power Network Operators Network performance & reliability improvement EV charging load management Renewable generation integration Distributed resource & storage optimization Capital project justification 20
LAH Field Trial -- Energynet EV Charging Deep EV grid impact visibility & 29 EV grid risk reduction Minimize EV grid burden 9, 22 & & 6 Support: Toyota ITC BMW PG&E
San Joaquin Valley High-Penetration PV Feeder node granularity with regional scope. Support: CEC PG&E 22
Conclusions Distribution comprises the majority of the power delivery network and is what touches nearly every customer. System averages can be deceiving. Only seeing the whole network reveals the outliers. Every customer s situation is different. Voltage varies in the distribution system this can affect the frequency of PQ events having real customer impacts. Knowing how you are connected and what network conditions are at your location within the network is feasible. Detailed data (e.g. customer data) at just a few locations can help calibrate the simulation. Knowing how network elements (and improvements!) interact and affect reliability and power quality is feasible. 23
