1 During the Summer term, VIU organizes and hosts a rich series of summer workshops in cooperation with the member institutions, in order to face specific themes related to present global challenges. The intensive international program of this Summer 2016 will focus on: the challenges that society faces today due to ageing population; environmental management, in particular the symptoms of global warming and the acceleration of sea level rise, and Resource and Environmental Economics; preservation of cultural heritage: on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of its creation, the Ghetto of Venice is proposed as theme for learning historical visualization and representation techniques as lived experience of the city, or as historical setting for Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice to reflect on the multiple representations of capitalism in literature, history, and the arts*. This year s edition is enhanced with an additional intensive workshops of research and education on the future of capitalism and responsible investing, and a summer schools on Anci ent and Modern Oriental Languages. 1 / 8

Responsible Capitalism: Strategy, Governance and Finance Applications closed on April 3, 2016 June 5-9, 2016 The growing gap between rich and poor, the social and environmental side effects of production and a regulatory vacuum around multinational production networks have forced new critical debate on our economic system. Responsible investing refers to how the choice of financial investments take into consideration environmental, social and governance factors (ESG), and the integration of these factors in traditional financial portfolio analysis and engagement activity. The program is designed to promote research and education on the future of capitalism and how these new practices will be effective in influencing corporate behaviour in more responsible ways. The school is organized by Venice International University with the participation of professors from Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, Columbia University, IESE Business School and University of Lausanne. 3 Summer Institute on Ageing Applications closed on May 6, 2016 June 6-10, 2016 The VIU Summer Institute on Ageing offers to international participants a set of activities to deepen the understanding of the ageing process from a theoretical and practical point of views, ranging from some basic notions of the medical and epidemiological literature, to an extensive treatment of economics (pensions and retirement, ageing in society and intergenerational relationships) and social sciences (role of family networks). The multidisciplinary approach gives applicants the opportunity to develop transversal competences both in the health and the economic dimension of ageing. The Summer School is co-organized by Venice International University, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, Université de Lausanne, Università degli Studi di Padova. 4 Visualizing Venice: Mapping and Modeling the Venice Ghetto Applications closed on March 31, 2016 June 8-20, 2016 The Digital Visualization Workshop, now on its 5th edition, teaches a range of digital skills in digital mapping, 3D modeling from ground plans and photos, mobile application development, and time based media authorship to enable participants to engage historical questions and dynamic process in urban and rural environments, with emerging digital tools. This year s course brings together PhD or post doctoral participants in the Interpretive Humanities in order to create new opportunities to research and share information about the built past, and in particular to engage with the Ghetto of Venice, on the 500th anniversary of its creation as case study for training with a variety of technologies and applications. Thanks to the generosity of The Getty Foundation, scholarships will be awarded to all the selected students in order to fully support the tuition fees. In organization with: The Wired! 5 Field Experiments in Environmental and Resource Economics with the European Association of Environmental and Resources Economists (EAERE) and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) Applications closed on February 1, 2016 June 26-July 2, 2016 The European Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics has as broader objective to provide advanced training for young international researchers on European issues of environmental and resource economics. The 2016 EAERE Summer School aims at discussing the most relevant research about field experimentation, with direct relevance of environmental economics, focusing on resources and valuation, cooperation, energy and water conservation, development and growth, as well as climate change. This School is organized in partnership with the project COBHAM "The role of consumer behaviour and heterogeneity in the integrated assessment of energy and climate policies", a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. 6 Environmental Management in a Changing World: Coping with Sea Level Rise Applications are now closed July 11-23, 2016 The Nicholas School of the Environment (Duke University) and Venice International University offer the third edition of a Summer Program: the workshop proposed provides, through a broad social, economic and environmental perspective, training in key topics about the impact of sea level rise on coastal areas and cities, and about adaptation and mitigation strategies. Participants will learn, in class and in the lab, the use of operational tools for coastal zone monitoring and management, and will participate in field campaigns aimed at exploring the most up-to-date techniques for coastal defense and protection. The Venice Lagoon will be used as a "laboratory", the ideal setup to study the intertwined dynamics of human and natural systems. 7 August 4-13, 2016 The intensive program offered by the Summer School in oriental languages (ÜLO) intends to train students from different nationalities in ancient and modern oriental languages, such as Akkadian, Classical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, Aramaic, classical Arabic, modern Arabic, old Persian, Persian, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, classical Ethiopian, Syriac, Old Church Slavonic. Students in BA, MA, PhD will have the opportunity to develop cross learning methods in language and communication proficiency as well as competencies in translation studies.
