Stack them in circular rows 3. Use tools to Slip and Score each row together ADVANCED: Try to make the vase go wide then narrow again.

4 COIL VASE VOCABULARY Coil Method= Making a clay project by rolling long thin snake like coils and stacking them. Weld = to smooth out after attaching to make it look like ONE piece of clay

11 TABLE THREE: TEXTURE SLABS What: Practice rolling slabs and making textures. At the end of the session, wedge your project back into a tight ball of clay. OR If this is your 1-keep project, put your period and initials on the bottom and put in Ready to Fire Cupboard. How: 1. Use the rolling pins or slab roller to make a slab 2. Use texture tools to add texture to the slab. 3. Try out different designs and different amounts of pressure. 4. Build something with the Slabs if you have time.

18 TABLE FOUR PINCH POT HEAD What: Use the Clay Pinch Pot method along with scoring to make a Head sculpture. At the end of the session, wedge your project back into a tight ball of clay. OR If this is your 1-keep project, put your period and initials on the bottom and put in Ready to Fire Cupboard. How: Create a pinch pot then use slip and score to add pieces to the pot to create a monster, animal or person s head.

22 VOCABULARY Wedge ~ to knead the clay by pounding or pushing on it repeatedly to remove air bubbles. Slip ~ a clay glue to attach clay made from water and clay.

24 TABLE FIVE: GLAZED ORNAMENTS What: explore glazes to create an ornament. How: 1. Choose a BISQUE fired shape. 2. Write your name on the back. 3. Paint with a combination of colors on the FRONT ONLY. At the end of the session, write your name and period on the back of the ornament and put in the ready to fire box

25 GLAZE PAINTING TIPS Use lighter colors first Put 2-3 layers of each color Let colors dry between layers Do NOT paint on the back or bottom of clay projects Use dark color to outline, draw designs or words over the top of lighter colors. MIX all paints well before using Wash brushes completely between different colors.

26 VOCABULARY Bisque ware ~ clay after it has been FIRED once in the KILN Glaze ware ~ clay after it has been painted with pottery glazes and fired a second time

27 GLAZE VOCABULARY Kiln: the machine that dries out the clay with HIGH heat, up to 2000 degrees Glaze = a liquid glass painted onto bisque ware that changes with high heat to create a shiny, colored finish
