1 Lesson 02 - Plan Unit title: Lesson 02 Lesson Plan Key concepts What is the Media? Reading a piece of Media Date: Time: No. of pupils Period Key learning objectives By the end of the lesson, pupils will: know how to read a piece of Media be able to write a response to a media piece Lesson content Teacher activity and teaching points and pupil activities/tasks Time (min) Pupils enter room and take seats in silence; registration 2 STARTER: Short writing. Display (or distribute) Resource 2A. Pupils write about image in the worksheet. Let the pupils know that they will learn more about this girl later in the scheme of work. Teacher quickly revises with the pupils what a charity is, then asks: how do you know about the different charities out there? How and where do they reach us? Answer should include: posters, TV adverts, magazines, the underground, bus stops, etc... Explain that the charities (and other types of companies) reach people through Media. Display Resource 2B: What is Media? Have the pupils copy it down. Main: explain that the pupils will be working with posters; next lesson they will be analyzing several themselves, and after that they will design their own. This lesson, the teacher will show them how to read a poster. Display Resource 2C: Poster Presentation Devices. Discuss and review the media elements being targeted by this unit and have the pupils copy them down into their book

2 Lesson 02 - Plan Display and distribute Resource 2D. Working with the class, complete the analysis of the poster. Plenary: homework task; short PEE writing consolidating analysis of poster. Display Resource 2E; pupils copy down and complete at home Differentiation (Plans for: the most able pupils; the less able; pupils with SEN; EAL learners). Look at the girl s: eyes mouth hair clothes Look at the background of the picture: consider what the expression on her face might mean think about who this girl might be Answer the following questions: 1. How is she feeling right now? 2. What do you think this girl might be thinking about? 3. What could have happened to her right before this picture was taken? 4. What does she want? 5. If this was a picture in a newspaper, what might the caption beneath the image say? 3

4 Lesson 02- Resource 2B Unit title: Lesson 02 Resource 2B What is the media? Media is the plural of Medium. Media are the storage and communication tools used to store and deliver information and ideas However, we normally use the term to mean mass media, which are the forms of media used to reach a very large audience. These include: books, video games, newspapers, podcasts, film, magazines, adverts, plays and many more... Take up the Barnardo s Team Challenge with your classmates! 5 Lesson 02- Resource 2C Unit title: Lesson 01 Resource 2C Presentation Devices Text The actual words written on the poster. What does the text tell you? Do you notice any special words or language? How about writing techniques, like similes or triplets The Image The main picture or pictures in the poster. How does it make the audience feel? What is the mood of the picture? Font / Style The styles of writing and the size of the printed text in the poster. Which words are printed in bold or in CAPITAL LETTERS or underlined? Is some of the writing very fancy, or is it simple or strong? What s the biggest part of the poster? What s the smallest? Layout The placement of the images, text, and other bits that make up the poster. What takes up the main part of the poster? Is there anything shoved off to the side? What s the biggest part of the poster? What s the smallest? 5

8 Image Poster Analysis Main picture is of a man dead underwater. Catches attention immediately. Contrast with name and age. Hand seems to be reaching out for help. Colour is faded, just as his life was. Smaller picture in bottom right: charity logo. Important to identify who is behind the poster. Lesson 02 - Resource 2D pupils Layout Picture is the focal point of the poster just as Children are the focus of the charity. Name and age slightly offset from centre, just as people like Richard are. Block of text at bottom easier to read for audience on public transport, and doesn t distract from impact of the image. Text Simple text gives name and age; age is surprising because man in picture is clearly older. Lots of text at bottom. Use of triplets. Quotation marks around problem children suggest he wasn t a problem; he needed help. Last sentences give order: DO something. Ends with important information: website and phone number. Font / Style First word of each sentence is in capital letters to make it easier to read. Strikeout suggests that Richard s life ended at the age of five because people gave up on him. Final sentences aren t struck out: what s needed to give kids like Richard a chance in life. 8

9 Lesson 02- Resource 2E Unit title: Lesson 02 Resource 2E Writing about Media You can use the same PEE (Point Evidence Explain) skills you use to write about poetry or a novel when writing about media. You read a poster or an advert the same way that you read a novel or play. Example How does the Barnardo s poster use its image to get its message across to an audience? The Barnardo s poster makes effective use of its image by the placement and choice of its main photograph. In the centre of the poster we see an image of a drowned man underwater. This is effective because it immediately draws the attention of its audience. The picture also makes up most of the poster, making it the main concern for the charity. Furthermore, the man seems to be reaching out towards the reader, suggesting that the viewer could have helped him. Finally, the image of the man contrasts with the words over them: the man clearly isn t 5 years old, which helps to catch the reader s interest.
