5 MARKET RESEARCH Office Desks The trend in physically and visually smaller, lighter, more portable will continue in US furniture market. The need of storage for traditional books is gradually decreasing. In stead, a simple minimal single desktop surface has become more popular than desks with heavy storage. Bookcases/Storage Cabinets The traditional library bookcases have been replaced by smaller bookshelves with open spaces. Bookcases primary purpose is no longer storing books. Instead, they serve as versatile storage system for any home accessories and sometimes become a decoration at home. Light weight storage system such as modular organizer has becoming more popular for millennials. Economical Alternatives Nomadic millennials usually are not willing to spend a lot of money on furniture because of its high price and low mobility. However, they tend to look for economical alternatives which are generally more portable, versatile, but with poor aesthetics. Plastic storage boxes are the most popular. 7 FIELD RESEARCH Activities Environments Interaction Objects Users User Research: AEIOU Analysis The people I recruited for my research were college students and young professionals who move annually and live an urban lifestyle. Through the interviews, I found their needs and wants by listening and observing their home environments. Furthermore, the AEIOU analysis guides me closer to opportunities in business and product solutions.

17 HIGH LEVEL SUMMARY TARGET AUDIENCE The furniture is designed for young people who live in short-term housing situations or who move frequently due to their job, hobby, or other factors. These millennials do not want to buy bulky furniture and are looking for an efficient and innovative alternative. MARKET OPPORTUNITY In both pernament and temporary living environments, there are high quality and high price furniture that consumers may choose to purchase. In temporary living environment, some students and other consumers with lower budget usually give up on purchasing furniture and choose the cheap plastic boxes as a popular storage system. These boxes are a cheap and versatile solution for moving and living. As a result, there is a market opportunity in the gap between cheap plastic boxes and IKEA. PRODUCT POSITIONING Learning from current storage systems and the business models from IKEA, borrowing the high protability of clothes organizers and smaller storage accessories, and the efficient storage from larger furniture, I aim to integrate high mobility into efficient storage system, forming a new product category. 19 SURVEY A Google survey was conducted to get feedback on the five finalized design directions from ideation. Since every person is a housewares user, the survey was published on a social media and received nearly 50 responses. The summary of the result are shown below. 21 Discover DESIGN CHECKLIST The box has to fit inside an average-size trunk for a regular sedan car and be comfortable to hold with two hands. The dimension of the box should not be bigger than 24 X 24 X 18 and a grip or a handle is needed somewhere on the side wall of the box. Define Design The furniture design needs to be rotational molding friendly. The outside radius should be bigger than There should be a draft along the parting line. The desk set should have comfortable ergonomics. The solution should be customizable or versatile. The height of the desk should be between 28 and 32 The height of the seat should be between 16 and 22 The solution must have at least one unique feature. Both the box form and the desk form should be aesthetically pleasing and well fitted. The furniture needs to have both a primary storage and a secondary storage. Incorporate storage for smaller objects. The box should have a spacious interior for packing, as well as side walls of certain height to hold objects. The edges of the box should not a rounded too much to avoid losing too much interior space. Delivery

26 Design For Consumer and Manufacturer Nomad includes 3 pieces of hollow forms made of HDPE (High-density polyethylene), which 3 the density is approximately 0.95 g/cm. Nomad weights approximately 6 kg. It is a lot lighter than a typical wooden desk. Every surface has draft angles and is slight curved in order to be rotational molding friendly.
