Facts about Teosto

what is teosto? A non-profit organisation founded in 1928 by composers and music publishers to administrate and protect their rights. Represents approximately 26,000 Finnish and almost three million foreign composers, lyric writers, arrangers and music publishers. Teosto has approximately 700 ordinary members, who constitute the decision-making body. The General Meeting is held twice a year. Teosto s Board of Directors, elected by the Annual Spring Meeting, consists of six ordinary members: 1 popular music composer, 1 contemporary music composer, 1 independent music author, 1 lyric writer, 2 music publishers. teosto s customers Teosto is a link between two customer groups; music authors and publishers on the one hand and companies and communities that use music on the other. what does teosto do? Collects and distributes performing rights royalties to music authors and publishers. Promotes and protects the rights of composers, lyric writers, arrangers and music publishers. Sells and develops licensing products that serve the needs of its music using customers. Promotes diversity in, awareness of and performances of Finnish music in Finland and on the export market. teosto is efficient The royalties Teosto collects are distributed to individual authors and publishers four times a year. Teosto is one of the most cost efficient copyright organisations in Europe. Music user customers obtaining licences from Teosto include TV and radio broadcasters, organisers of concerts and other events and companies in various sectors that use music to support their business, entertain their customers or motivate their personnel. 3 teosto s mission Teosto enables successful professional music making in Finland. teosto s vision Teosto is the most active and competent solution provider in the Finnish music market. teosto s values For our customers, on behalf of music. We think creatively and resolve efficiently. We are responsible. We are enthusiastic, we succeed.

teosto represents music authors Copyright means the right of the creator of a work of art to determine how that work is used. Copyright is based on national law and international treaties. Copyright survives for 70 years after the death of the author. The author of a music work has the right to decide on the public performance, mechanical reproduction and distribution of that work. Music authors and publishers have authorised Teosto to grant permission to perform their works on their behalf. Mechanisation rights are managed by the Nordisk Copyright Bureau NCB on behalf of music authors and publishers represented by Teosto. teosto links authors and music users Teosto grants licences to use music to various companies and communities on behalf of the rightholders it represents. Teosto negotiates and agrees on the fees for music licences with its user customers or their umbrella organisations. If Teosto did not exist, music users would have to obtain a separate licence for every musical work from their respective authors.

how are the royalties distributed to the right people? Composers and lyric writers report their works to Teosto. Teosto uses this data to determine who is/are the author(s) of a particular musical work and who the royalties collected should be paid to. Teosto also conveys the data to international databases. Teosto collects information on performances of music in various ways. Information on live performances comes from event and concert organisers or the performers. TV and radio broadcasters submit detailed information of their music use to Teosto. Teosto also commissions an annual study on the use of background music in restaurants, shops, hairdressers etc. Performance royalties paid by companies, event organisers and other music users are conveyed by Teosto to the authors and publishers of the musical works performed. Finnish composers, lyric writers, arrangers and publishers are paid their royalty distributions directly. Foreign authors and publishers are paid through sister organisations of Teosto in their respective countries. Mechanical reproduction royalties of music authors represented by Teosto are collected by the Nordisk Copyright Bureau NCB. Teosto distributes the royalties collected by NCB to Finnish authors and publishers.

cultural ambassadors: a bridge between politics and everyday life In 2009, Teosto launched the Cultural ambassadors project, which is still going strong; its aim is to bring together political decisionmakers and music makers. In this project, professional music makers can get their voice heard and acquaint an MP from their region to the work and everyday life of musicians. MPs in every electoral district can be appointed a cultural ambassador if they so wish to discuss current issues in the creative sector. The cultural ambassadors thus form a link between copyright administration, politics and music makers everyday lives. finnish copyright organisations There are five other copyright organisations in Finland besides Teosto: Gramex, Kopiosto, Kuvasto, Sanasto and Tuotos. The Finnish copyright organisations have jointly set up the Copyright Information and Anti-Piracy Centre (TTVK) to publish information on copyright and to prevent piracy. Teosto promotes diversity and exports of Finnish music as a member of the Music Finland association formed by the merger of the Finnish Music Information Centre FIMIC and the Music Export Finland Association.
