3 In 2010, students (and their parents) spent on average nearly $800 per couple. Here is a list of expenses many expect to pay for their high school prom. Stay out of debt by keeping your expenses less than your earnings.

5 Average Monthly Expenditures Recordkeeping - a way to manage your money Expenditures - the items you spend your money on. By keeping track of your monthly expenditures, you can find out how you have spent your money and how much money you need for living expenses. Budget sheet - where you record your expenses. Average Monthly Expenditure Sum of Monthly Expenditures # of Months

6 Example 1 Sue and Bob Miller keep records of their expenditures. They want to know how much they spend each month (on the average). Here are their records for three months. What is their average monthly expenditure? A. Find the sum of monthly expenditures B. Take the sum and divide by # of months.

8 Example 1 Answer: Compute the average monthly expenditure. A. Find the sum of monthly expenditures. $1, $1, $1, = $4, B. Divide the sum by the number of months. Sum of Monthly Expenditures Number of Months $4, = $1,356.81

9 Example 2: Use the same example and find the average monthly amount spent for the electric bill.

11 Preparing A Budget Sheet If you have records of your expenditures, you can use them to prepare your budget sheet. Living varies month to month, such as food costs, utility bills, pocket money Fixed - don t vary from month to month, such as rent Annual occur once a year, such as insurance premiums, real estate taxes Total Monthly Monthly Monthly Share Monthly Living Fixed of Annual

13 Example 4 Tanisha and Jared have monthly living expenses of $875.00, monthly fixed expenses of $1, and annual expenses of $4, After calculating the Browns monthly share of annual expenses, find their total monthly expenditures. 15 Using a Budget Once you have completed a budget sheet outlining your past expenditures, you can use it to plan for future spending. expense summary - A monthly report that compares the amounts you spend to the amounts you have budgeted. emergency fund - Extra monies set aside to be used for unpredictable expenses, such as medical bills and vehicle repairs. Financial experts recommend that you have enough money in an emergency fund to cover expenses for 3 6 months. List a few surprise expenses that you might incur in a year.

16 Example 5 The Murrays electricity bill for July was budgeted for $88. They actually spent $124. How much more or less did they spend than they budgeted? $36 more
