Keefer This is an economical drill book of French verbs of about 125 pages. Then you have an answer key and index of common French verbs from French to English and English to French. It includes all conjugations for every tense. This is not a comprehensive workbook for mastery. Rather, it is a refresher on French verbs. It's a drill book for teachers and students of French who want more practice and review. It would need to be longer to be more comprehensive. It has clear organization and opportunities for translation. As a supplementary text, think you would find it useful. I am using it during the summer to keep my French verb skills current. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love this book - but 4th edition exactly same as 3rd By Our Family I have used the 2nd edition of this book as a French instructor for years and have loved it. Earlier this year, I upgraded first to the 3rd edition, and then to the 4th edition (please see my notes on the differences below, as they may well be helpful). My goal in using these books, with my own children as well as in my teaching, is essentially to review what has already been presented. I have found these books to do a good job at summarizing each tense, the regular and irregular verbs (and their patterns and regularities) and the exercises are very helpful with repetition, practice, and review. I highly recommend it for these purposes. I am not sure that it's a good book for a true beginner with no real background in either French or another foreign language. But it is possible to learn to use French verbs and their tenses using this book to some degree, especially if you just need to learn a couple tenses, say the subjunctive or the passe simple, if you already have a background of some kind in French or other languages. The 3rd edition is a fabulous improvement on the 2nd edition; the type is easier to read, the explanations generally clearer, and the index very helpful. One formatting complaint would be that there is no spacing or other division between the tenses of the irregular verbs and I went thru the book with a ruler and a pen to draw horizontal divisions between them so the lines didn't simply run together. It took me about 10 minutes to do this and made it much much better and easier to use. There are a few things (only a very few) I thought better in the 2nd, but nothing significant or worth mention here. Frankly, most of the text and exercises were the same, including the couple of mistakes I had already noted in the 2nd edition (mostly the use of the spelling change verb commencer twice before it is introduced formally as a spelling change verb; and of course, the questions asked required the use of the spelling change...) The 4th edition is exactly the same as the 3rd - I can't find a single difference between the two, and I looked very carefully, except for the copyright page which tells where to go to find online exercises, which can be accessed at no additional charge by going to the mhprofessional site directly, searching for this title, and launching the exercises... which are not that helpful (multiple choice) and limited. So much for that "bonus". I'm honestly very disappointed in the 4th edition (given that it's not really another edition - just a reprint at higher cost to make it "look" newer.). 7 My recommendation is to buy a "new" (discounted) version of the 3rd edition and have fun solidifying your knowledge of and ability to use verbs in French. The 2nd edition is by no means a waste of your money if you can get it cheaply (or even free) but the 3rd is definitely an improvement. 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A fairly good drill book By Corran Horn As a book for verb drills, this book is alright. It has a nice glossary in the back, and it has complete conjugations of many irregular verbs. It's set up so that it deals with all of the tenses first in their regular forms, and then later there are exercises for irregular verbs, which quiz you on all tenses/moods at once. Personally, I think it would be better for the book to have longer sections about each tense/mood, which deal with irregular and regular verbs at the same time. In other words, I would rather practice one tense at a time, rather than, as the second section is set up, practice irregular verbs one at a time in all of their different tenses/moods. Most classes (high school or college) are set up so that you deal with one tense at a time (regular and irregular at the same time) as you eventually learn all of the tenses, and unfortunately this book isn't set up that way. That's my personal preference, and, perhaps, once I have learned all of the tenses, this book will be more useful for me. I would really recommend this book instead, for it presents the verbs by their tense, and it provides lessons about prepositions and useful verb expressions (ex. faire la cuisine, avoir de la chance) as an added bonus.
