Talk with academic advisors, faculty and staff while learning more about UF's PaCE program. This chat is for newly admitted PaCE students and family members. Academic Advisors will be available to answer questions in college specific chat rooms. Main Lobby pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): My name is Mandi Santos and I'm a pre-health advisor. I'll be happy to address anypre-health specific questions you have here! pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): Mandi will be in the Pre-Health room :) pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): Welcome to today's chat! pacechatmoderator(journalism&comm_judy): Good afternoon, everyone! I'm Judy Hunter and I'll be glad to answer questions you may have about our degree programs: Advertising, Journalism, Public Relations, and Telecommunication. I'll be in the Journalism and Communications chatroom. pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): There are several of us in the various rooms ready to answer your questions. I'll be in the CLAS room as well as in the main lobby to answer non college-specific academic questions. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Hello, everyone! My name is Leigh Smadbeck and I will be in the Business Administration chatroom. pacechatmoderator(cals_herschel): Join CALS_Herschel from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in our chat room with your questions. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): Good afternoon everyone, my name is Kris Klann and I'm Assoc. Dir. in New Student & Family Programs. We've got 6 chatrooms set up today (Agriculture & Life Sciences, Health & Human Performance, Business, Journalism, Liberal Arts & Sciences and Pre Health) where you can ask individual questions. Or you can ask general questions here in the lobby. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): Does anyone have any general questions to get us started? svlachapelle@aol.com: My daughter wants to major in Dietetics and minor in French. How will that work within the framework of the PaCe program? pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): Good afternoon, everyone! I'm Owen Beatty and I'll be glad to answer questions you may have about our degree programs: Health Education, Sport Management and Tourism, Event and Recreation Management. I'll be in the Health and Human Performance Chatroom. pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): If you pop over to the Agricultural and Life Sciences room, Herschel can talk to you about Dietetics... lcooper21: Thanks Kris Thank you for your time I m a Mom, Gator Alum with one son who is currently a Gator (Jr. in JM College) and one who was just admitted into PACE. We are such a hot mess of indecision on this! (My son Alexander is out of the country on a mission trip so that s why I m chatting.) My first question and MAJOR concern is support for PACE students overall is there a brick and mortar office with a `real human (ha!) where he can go to for advising? milleratyler: What are my options for on campus/off campus housing? pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): A french minor is a viable option, and we can talk to your daughter about that at her advising appointment. Minors are usually credit hours, so factoring that in once on campus is likely the best route. - what major is your son considering? I venture to say that all of our advising offices would be happy to meet with him face to face Lobby

if you have questions about the Dietetics program feel free to join me in the Agriculture chat room lcooper21: Thanks Meredith, he's considering Business (prefers Finance) I've just typed a similar question to send to Leigh. As a freshman, would his advisor be in the School of Business or a 'general' academic advisor? pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): first congratulations on having such a big gator family! I'm a Gator alum as well and I know how exciting it can be to get that admissions letter. pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): In PaCE, he'd be with Leigh from the beginning svlachapelle@aol.com: I'm not sure how to move over there. pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): There should be a button to Add more chatrooms toward the top and you can select which ones you want as far as getting advising in person, absolutely students are welcome to visit with their advisor in person. Later this Spring and into the Summer we'll have an online orientation, as well as some extended advising programs that students will complete to begin planning their first semester of classes. If Alexander comes to campus, he can take advantage of in person advising, and the location will depend on what he selects as his major. is there menu bar at the top "add more chat rooms"? for PaCE students completing the UF Online portion of their degree, they cannot live on campus, but can take advantage of UF's Office of Off Campus Life (offcampus.ufl.edu) to learn more about the off campus housing options within Gainesville. Once PaCE students are ready to transition to on campus portion of their degree, they can apply for On Campus Housing if the wish. lcooper21: Thanks Kris - it was great of course, but certainly bittersweet. He's dreamed of the UF on-campus experience and especially going to school for a year with his big brother. Not sure if the PACE-style program sets him up for success though, not sure he is an online learner vs. and interactive classroom learner. His other choice is FSU so obviously I'm in agony ;) svlachapelle@aol.com: No, there is no menu bar. There is a bar that says LOBBY. lcooper21: svlachapelle@aol.com on my computer it's a down arrow at top of this box milleratyler: how many students have currently accepted the pace program? - we don't have an admissions rep with us today to handle that question but the interest has been very high! I completely understand. I would encourage him (or you and him) to check out the UF Online YouTube channel ( to get some more in depth information about the set up of the classes. svlachapelle@aol.com: no down arrow either. - maybe Herschel can help you in the main lobby if you can't access his chat room. We don't want you to not get answers! if it doesn't work out today please feel free to me directly at hdjohnson@ufl.edu so we can provide timely information to assist with your questions. I can also answer questions here to eliminate potential frustration. MichelleSE: Is this the first year the Pace program is offered? pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): Yes it is. This is the inaugural year! Lobby

I'm wondering if most of the classes with in the first 2 years are basic classes or if there will be some specific to the Dietetics major. How will classes work that require a lab? MichelleSE: for the health sciences major approximately how long will it take for students to transition to campus? because i discovered that there are tracking courses. so how do those work? - Owen is in the Health and Human Performance room and is ready to answer that for you! the first two years are primarily general educational and foundation Science courses with the specific Dietetics (DIE) course beginning junior year. MichelleSE: for PaCE students are they allowed to rush sororities? i ed panhellinic themselves but they never got back to me. lcooper21: Thank you Kris - Leigh is being very helpful in the Business 'room'. Have a great day! aimzsinc: Hello. I am coming to campus on March 20. Is it possible to speak with someone in CLAS regarding the history major for the PaCE program? here is a link to the sample academic plan for you to reviewhttps://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/agriculture/majors/dietetics.aspx...once again based on credit hours already completed and needed before meeting the 60 hour mark we will work individually to set the student up with a successful academic path. - if you'll us at CLASPaCE@advising.ufl.edu with the date/time frame you'd like to meet, we'll get you set up with an in-person appointment. lab courses may be taken as a transient student at a local university/state college as appropriate if not available online. This will be another option that advisers work individually with students to find the best pathway aimzsinc: Thank you. I will have approximately 33 credit hours when I graduate high school. Is it advisable to take classes during summer term at my local college (St. Petersburg College)? I would like to be able to transition after two semesters and be ready for on-campus enrollment in fall of it may be advisable to do that. It is definitely possible. We'd like to talk to you in detail about what you'd like to take so that your productivity is maximized. This is something we can discuss more next week when we get to meet you in person. svlachapelle@aol.com: so if my daughter is living in Gainesville and her online class requires a lab, will she be able to participate in the lab at UF? aimzsinc: Great! In reading previous posts where should I look in the catalog to be more prepared to discuss possible classes pertinent to the history major? look here: pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): The catalog (with new gen ed requirements) will be up on on May 1st and it will give you all the info on the history major. pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): The current catalog has similar requirements but the gen eds are different - the class will have a lab structured within it. She will not be able to join in a different, on-campus lab section. aimzsinc: Perfect. I just sent in my admissions deposit and signed contract. How long before I will be "in the system" and when will I be able to sign up for UF online orientation? Lobby

not in the traditional sense. If UF online offers the appropriate course w/lab she would take it as part of UF online. However, many students will benefit from taking the core science courses (Chemistry, Biology) at Santa Fe College as a transient student until the 60 hours are met and she can transition to UF main campus. This options will not prevent long term goals and with careful planning with advising can be a smooth transition. once we know what her starting point is and potential credits she may already have we can establish a plan to appropriately track through the Dietetics program using all available options. a transient student is one who has UF as their home institution but is approved to take courses at another state institution where they can attend in class/on campus to meet appropriate requirements that are not offered online through UF online as part of the PaCE structure. Biology I with lab for example would be a good transient option. svlachapelle@aol.com: Ok, thank you. That's helpful. You are welcome. Do you all feel comfortable with PaCE as you receive more information or still have a lot of questions? aimzsinc: Herschel, only my question regarding how I will notified regarding orientation and where to find information about orientation. One more question, I see on the calendar that registration starts as early for March 23rd. Is that the case for on PaCE classes once orientation is completed? svlachapelle@aol.com: My main concern is that she'll miss out on the class interaction with the online courses. Taking some classes at another college may help with this. PaCE students will complete Links, an online orientation program. Links will be available beginning in mid April. PaCE students will work with their advisors to register for classes after they have complete orientation. March registration is for current/returning students. that is a valid concern. Santa Fe does have quality instruction to provide a foundation for UF and the smaller class size may assist with the transition to the college classroom. aimzsinc: Thanks! I will definitely to set up a time to meet next Friday. Will I receive communication from an online advisor once my signed contract and deposit is received about the next steps to start the process? MichelleSE: can i ask a tuition question here? - after you complete the orientation, you'll be directed to the next advising steps. - go ahead, but we may have to refer you to the financial affairs office :) you can definitely ask and we will try our best to answer it MichelleSE: We are currently out-of-state but plan on moving down to Florida in June. How does that effect tuition? that is a reclassification question. I'm going to refer you to the UF Online OneStop. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): There phone number is or at ufonlineonestop@mail.ufl.edu pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): their* Lobby

aimzsinc: I am definitely interested in the history as a major but would like a chance to ask questions regarding the telecommunications media major. Who should I contact and would I perhaps be able to meet with someone in that dept. next Friday? MichelleSE: Ok - Thank you so much UF Team - we will review some info and set up phone calls with Owen and Mandi. I think the biggest concerns these students have is to really feel like they are part of the UF school + involved in the whole 'Gator' spirit + experience. Judy in the Journalism chatroom can help you with your questions about Telecommunications. I'm Judy Hunter, representing the College of Journalism and Communications. We offer the degree in Telecommunication. You can me for an appointment at jhunter@jou.ufl.edu. aimzsinc: Thanks! This has been a great opportunity to have some of my questions answered about the next steps to take in the PaCE program. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): many of our incoming students have questions about how they will transition to such a large University. Our goal within Student Affairs is to help students with this transition and help them find their connection points. I am always available to talk with students (and family members) more one-on-one if it will help. My is KrisK@dso.ufl.edu and you can me your questions or we can set up a time to talk over the phone or meet in person. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): We have about 5 minutes left in our chat today. Are their any final questions we can help with? aimzsinc: There were a lot of great links and contact information in this chat. Is there a script available to refer to later? in several days we'll have them posted at aimzsinc: Thank you. pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): That concludes our chat for today. Thanks everyone for the great questions! Please join us again for our next chat on Friday at 3:00 p.m. If you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact us at newstudentinfo@dso.ufl.edu. And Go Gators! pacechatmoderator(journalism&comm_judy): Thanks, everyone! Congratulations again on your admission to UF! pacechatmoderator(clas_meredith): Thanks all!! Lobby

Talk with academic advisors, faculty and staff while learning more about UF's PaCE program. This chat is for newly admitted PaCE students and family members. Academic Advisors will be available to answer questions in college specific chat rooms. Business Administration pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Welcome to the Business Administration chatroom. My name is Leigh Smadbeck and I am an Academic Advisor & Career Coach in the Heavener School of Business. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If you have any questions about the General Studies major offered through PaCE, I would be happy to address them here. lcooper21: Hi Leigh! Thank you for your time! My main concern is support for PACE students within the program overall and within the School of Business in particular - is there a brick and mortar office with a `real human (ha!) where he can go to for advising? He has never taken classes online where will he go to for help if he has an issue/doesn t understand the work? Will he be able to participate at all in any of the on-campus study groups or tutoring? pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Yes! That would be me :) pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): The School of Business designated an Academic Advisor to work with PaCE students rather than a UF Online Advisor so we could establish the relationship before the students arrive on campus. I am happy to meet with PaCE students in person, over the phone, or through . pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): I understand the concern of online classes if it is new to your son. However, I can assure you it will feel very similar to the experience of on campus students because he will be watching the same lectures played back online. The on campus students often do not attend the optional live lectures because they will just be posted online for them to view at their convenience. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): There are plenty of resources that students can go to for assistance, including the professor, TA's, tutors, or academic advisors. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): And he will have access to on-campus study groups and tutoring. lcooper21: Okay... that reassures me abit :) could he sign up for the Business College tour with the student delegates, and then meet with you or would the tour not be good for him at this stage? He's on break when he gets back from his trip. I was thinking of coming up on Friday? pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): The Warrington Diplomats do conduct tours of the Business School on Fridays, and I would be happy to meet with you on the day you choose to come for a tour. lcooper21: okay, I'll sign him up for it and you to see if you are available. Thank you! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Here is the website to schedule a tour: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): It looks like they ask you to schedule one at least one week in advance. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If you plan to come on March 20th, the only appointment I have available that day before your tour would be 1pm. Would you like me to schedule you for that day and time? lcooper21: Dang it. I'll give it a try! My other question is about changing his major once he merges on-campus - he's thinking of Finance or Marketing. I understand that it is difficult because it is so competitive - can you tell me what that process would be, I know he has to successfully fulfill all the transfer requirements and the seven prerequisite classes... what else is used to determine whether or not he'll be able to succeed in changing his major? Business Administration

lcooper21: I was actually thinking of THIS Friday the 13th! (does not bode well, ha!) pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Yes, this Friday might be too short notice for the Diplomats to get back to you. And I do not have any available appointments to meet with you this Friday. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): So the process of changing majors to one that is not offered within PaCE (e.g. Finance) goes like this: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): He would need to complete the seven Universal Tracking courses with an extremely high GPA, putting him in the top 5-10% of transfer applicants. He would also need to complete his AA degree (after earning 60 credit hours). This would make him eligible to apply as an upper-division transfer student to the Finance major, but it does not guarantee his Admission. I believe there have only been about 5 spots available in recent years, and countless applications. We do not want him to accept PaCE if his ultimate intention is to obtain a degree in Finance. Instead, we would want him to think that the General Studies major is a good fit for him. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): To reiterate what I've just said but with a little more detail, here is the website for transfer admissions: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Does he have an idea of what he would choose as an Area of Specialization if he decided to accept PaCE and pursue the General Studies major? pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If he hasn't already browsed the list of options for Areas of Specialization, I would encourage him to review them here: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): The General Studies major is a great option for students who have an interest in something outside of Business (e.g. Sports Management, Tourism, Mass Communication, Pre-Law) lcooper21: (sorry, got a phone call!) Yes, thank you - we've read and printed out all that info. No, we've looked at the options and sadly doesn't see anything. He would like management/sales but I see that's only offered in agribusiness. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): I see. So his career goals currently are management/sales? pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Areas of Specialization are not the only ways to stand out to employers. I would suggest that he pursues an internship opportunity in the sales or management fields, perhaps get involved in the recently developed sales club, and maybe look into a minor in retailing. lcooper21: He likes the Marketing side of business, Brand Management (we have a friend in that business) - we attended Preview at FSU and they had an interesting professional sales major that caught his eye. lcooper21: We have a sales club?? That was a big selling point at 'the other school'... he just does NOT want to go there. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Yes, it is in the early stages of development. In fact, one of the Career and Academic Peer Mentors (CAP) Mentors that I supervise started the club because of his interest in sales. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): I am sure he would be happy to answer any questions you or your son has. His contact information can be found here: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): His name is Justin Rich under the Management and General Studies Team Business Administration

pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): You can see he's had an internship at Macy's and has interest areas in sales and recruiting. milleratyler: If I decide to try to transfer from the General Studies major to Finance will there be a resume you submit or will it solely be based on gpa? changing your major to Finance will require a completely new application process. You will be applying to UF as an upper-division transfer student after obtaining your AA degree. Please allow me to copy and paste what I've written above to another participant because I do get this question quite often: pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): He would need to complete the seven Universal Tracking courses with an extremely high GPA, putting him in the top 5-10% of transfer applicants. He would also need to complete his AA degree (after earning 60 credit hours). This would make him eligible to apply as an upper-division transfer student to the Finance major, but it does not guarantee his Admission. I will you about an appointment Leigh, you've been very helpful and I appreciate your time. I am happy to help and wish you luck! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If you have any other questions in the meantime, my is leigh.smadbeck@warrington.ufl.edu. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): To make an appointment, please call lcooper21: Will do - thanks! Go Gators :) here is the real link! milleratyler: Thank you! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): You're welcome! lcooper21: One last quick question - what is the difference between a BS and a BA in GenBus? pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): The BS (Bachelor of Science) refers to majors including Marketing, Management, Finance, etc. The BA (Bachelor of Arts) refers to the General Studies major. The difference is in the coursework completed. While the BS degrees have upper-division coursework in one of the Business specialties, the BA degree has upper-division coursework in one of the Areas of Specialization. The difference between a BA and BS does not have an effect in the workforce; it is merely determined at the academic level based on curriclum. Business Administration

pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): It is in no way a reflection of the rigor. For example, you can have an Area of Specialization in Mathematics or Pre-Med, which can be considered more rigorous than some of the Business courses. In addition, it is not that the Area of Specialization coursework replaces the upper-division business coursework done for the other majors; in fact, the General Studies majors are required to take approximately 3 additional Business Electives to round out their degree. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): The differences between all the Business majors (Finance vs. Management or Marketing vs. General Studies) is very minimal if you look at the coursework. That is why employers rank major so low on their list of things they consider in a job applicant. Internship and work experience were ranked #1 and #2 in the last study I reviewed. lcooper21: Oh.. okay, I understand that. And it's good news. But wouldn't being able to take more courses in what discipline he's interested in be preferable to an area of specialization that he's not? I'm trying to wrap my mind around the GenBus with what for him (at this point) would be a random area of specialization... Not being negative at all, just want him to be perfectly clear with what he'd be doing. lcooper21: I don't want to keep you too long, and SO appreciate your input - I think Alexander meeting with you in person would be great! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Sure, that's understandable. I would think of the Area of Specialization as an opportunity for him to study something he really finds interesting that may not be related to his career goals now. He may have difficulty taking upper-division coursework in Finance if he is not a Finance major, but there are other ways to explore that interest as well. For instance, the Investment clubs on campus are extremely popular and thriving. Getting an internship in the Finance field will also expose him to topics he may not even have been able to in a course. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): And I am here until 4:30, so feel free to ask as many questions as you can think of until then. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): He can also look into doing research with a faculty member in the field of Finance. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): There are plenty of non-finance majors who ultimately decide that is the path they want to take, and also plenty of Finance majors who decide that it is not the path they pursue. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Is he planning to live in Gainesville right away if he decides to accept PaCE? lcooper21: Your advice and perspective are definitely helping settle my heart :) YES! He wants to live in G'vlle and I think that would be best for him to feel apart of UF life. So..can you say anything that will make me feel better about him living "outside" the UF experience and learning/working behind a computer? haha! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Well, for one thing, I don't think he will feel as though he is living "outside" the UF experience because the UF experience IS Gainesville. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If he is here living in an off-campus apartment, he is like the majority of UF students. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): He will not be attending classes in person, but he can watch the lectures in the library, as many students do. He can seek out tutoring, meet with his advisor (me) in person, get involved as much as he'd like, etc. lcooper21: That's true... as an Alum, I totally get that. But I believe strongly that the dorm experience is super important for a Freshman to make connections with his peers. UF has been such an incredible experience for his older brother, which makes this harder for us. Business Administration

pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): That's true that the residence hall life will be something he might miss; however, it may meet friends by joining clubs and attending events and then hang out in their residence halls, without having to lived in them! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Please excuse my typos! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): I taught a Warrington Welcome (First Year Florida) course this past Fall, and I was surprised how many of the Freshmen were not living in the residence halls by choice. lcooper21: Sure! no worries... hard to type as fast as we think in our head! Yes... he'd have the best of both worlds that way for sure - my nephew lived off campus as a Jr. and would crash at my son's dorm room all the time in between classes... And yes, that's what he's planning on doing - finding a spot in the Library as his 'classroom' on a regular basis (praying he'd have the self-discipline to do that!) pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Yes, it will be a test of his self-discipline. If he is struggling with it, as along as he is proactive about seeking out appropriate resources, I am confident he would be able to adjust quickly. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): About how many college credits is is bringing in? Any Universal Tracking course credit? pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): We have about 5 minutes left in our chat today. Are their any final questions we can help with? lcooper21: So far nine (AP Psych and USHistory) - and currently taking AP Calc, Physics and Spanish - so if he passes those as well possibly up to 17++ pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): AP Calc, AP Physics, and AP Spanish will be particularly helpful. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): We have to wrap up today, but I look forward to meeting with you and Alexander. lcooper21: Yes! And he's got all A's in them now - so pending a bad case of senioritis... And he could start this summer by taking a couple classes at either Santa Fe or USF (we live in Tampa) right? lcooper21: OKAY! Me too Leigh - have a great rest of the day! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): If you think you will be able to attend a tour on March 20th, I do suggest claiming that 1pm appointment because it might be taken quickly. lcooper21: Will do! pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Yes he could take a couple courses this summer at either of those schools. pacechatmoderator(ba_leigh): Good luck to him on his exams and we'll be in touch soon! lcooper21: Great :) pacechatmoderator(nsfp_kris): That concludes our chat for today. Thanks everyone for the great questions! Please join us again for our next chat on Friday at 3:00 p.m. If you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact us at newstudentinfo@dso.ufl.edu. And Go Gators! 11 Talk with academic advisors, faculty and staff while learning more about UF's PaCE program. This chat is for newly admitted PaCE students and family members. Academic Advisors will be available to answer questions in college specific chat rooms. Health and Human Performance MichelleSE: for the health sciences major approximately how long will it take for students to transition to campus? because i discovered that there are tracking courses. so how do those work? pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): Hi Michelle, for the Health Education major, (not to be confused with "Health Sciences", two very different degrees) the amount of time to transition to campus depends on the number of credit hours you would be bringing through AP/IB, Dual Enrollment, etc. MichelleSE: what can you tell us about tracking courses? pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): All degrees at UF have "tracking" courses. These courses are required to be completed by a certain semester in order for a student to remain on track for graduation in 8-semesters. You can view tracking courses for the Health Education major here - pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): When you review the link, you will see a "recommended semester plan" and the tracking courses in bold. For example, it is expected that after semester 1, student will have 15 credit hours and a C or better in MAC1105 (or higher) and PSY2012. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): If I'm misinterpreting your question in any way, just let me know. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): PaCE students would need to have 60 hours and the tracking (bold courses in the previously sent link) courses met before transitioning to the residential program. MichelleSE: We have started to review the different course options and unsure of which path to take. Is there someone we can speak with via phone to review the best options? Amanda wants to work towards being a pediatrician or working with children in a health related profession. We understand that health professionals are not recommended to go this path but UF is somewhere she really wants to apply to. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): I'm happy to make an appointment to speak with Amanda and answer as many questions as I can. Please me at beattyo@hhp.ufl.edu and we can set an appointment. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): Generally speaking, if a student is confident they want to attend a professional graduate health program, taking online science courses with labs is not advised. MichelleSE: Thanks Owen - that would be great - we will you to set up an appointment. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): My pleasure. MichelleSE: Any thoughts about this new program approach? Do you see this as a new college experience and future? university and UF specifically are always looking for ways to increase access to higher education for students. This program was a way for UF to allow more students access to the University by using their highly ranked UF Online program. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): I do believe, with the emphasis on serving the state of Florida and increasing access, this is a very good model that will grow over time. I also think there are some real opportunities for institutions, in this case UF, to really perfect interactive, online/distance delivery methods through programs like these. These advancements improve all teaching, distance and residential. Health and Human Performance

MichelleSE: I guess the confusion is there are Majors Available Through PaCE vs UF Online. So if wanting to go into health profession through the PaCE program, then College of HHP -Health Ed + Behavior is the way to go? Then get 60 hours by the end of 2 semesters, then student can transition on campus learning? pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): HEB is "A" path to a graduate health program, but certainly not the only path. Most graduate health programs are much less concerned with the undergraduate major, and more concerned with how the student performs in the prerequisite courses, among other requirements. 13 Talk with academic advisors, faculty and staff while learning more about UF's PaCE program. This chat is for newly admitted PaCE students and family members. Academic Advisors will be available to answer questions in college specific chat rooms. Pre-Health pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): My name is Mandi Santos and I'm a pre-health advisor. I'll be happy to address any pre-health specific questions you have here! MichelleSE: for the health sciences major approximately how long will it take for students to transition to campus? because i discovered that there are tracking courses. so how do those work? pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): It looks like Owen answered your question about the major. Are there any other pre-health related questions I can help you with? pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): the health science majoris unfortunately not available for the PaCE program MichelleSE: If student plans to live off campus, can they take online PaCE courses as well as online campus the first year? pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): I am unsure exactly what you are asking, but all courses taken within PaCE are all web based courses pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): they are taken through the UF Online program and offerings available within that program pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): HEB is "A" path to a graduate health program, but certainly not the only path. Most graduate health programs are much less concerned with the undergraduate major, and more concerned with how the student performs in the prerequisite courses, among other requirements. This leads us back to the caution about taking science courses with labs online. There is a Pre-Health adviser that can also provide additional details on graduate health admissions. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): Whoops...answered in the wrong forum...sorry. pacechatmoderator(hhp_owen): Though, is does fit to some extent. I am available to answer any questionsregarding medical schoolcompetitiveness MichelleSE: Thanks Mandi - can we also send you an to set up an appointment to speak over the phone? Just want to be clear on the courses /direction Amanda can take. pacechatmoderator(prehealth_mandi): Absolutely! You can prehealth@advising.ufl.edu with general questions and we can get those questions answered.all of our advisors work with incoming first year students so if you would like to set up a phone appointment you can claspace@advising.ufl.edu with the date and time that works for you and they will get an appointment set up for you.
