1 Doctor of Philosophy Program in Linguistics 1. Academic program Doctor of Philosophy Program in Linguistics 2. Degree offered Doctor of Philosophy (Linguistics) Ph.D. (Linguistics) 3. Objectives 1. To produce graduates with knowledge and competence in performing analysis, and conducting research in linguistics at an advanced level. 2. To produce graduates capable of developing and applying concepts in linguistics to further research and professional careers. 3. To help develop expertise in theoretical and applied linguistics among linguistic scholars. 4. Admission criteria 4.1 Applicants must hold a master s degree in language-related areas, e.g. linguistics, applied linguistics, Thai, English, language and literature, from a local or overseas university accredited by the Council for University Affairs of Thailand. Their grade point average obtained from their completed master s degree must not be lower than Applicants must provide proof of English proficiency from one of the recognized English language examinations: TOEFL ( 550 pbt, or 80 ibt), IELTS ( 6), or TU-GET ( 550), or equivalents. 4.3 Applicants must also produce evidence that their qualifications meet the requirements as prescribed in Item 8 of the Thammasat University Regulations for Graduate Programs (1998). 5. Application screening Applicants are assessed for admission on the following criteria: 1. A dissertation research proposal 2. An interview 6. Academic system 6.1 There are 2 regular semesters per year, lasting 16 weeks each. The summer semester lasts 8 weeks. 6.2 Languages of instruction are Thai and English. 6.3 The program is research-oriented. Assessment includes the completion of coursework, a comprehensive examination, a qualifying examination, and a dissertation. 6.4 Students are eligible to take the comprehensive examination provided they have completed at least 12 credits of required courses and maintained a G.P.A. of no less than The students are given only 3 attempts to pass this examination, otherwise they will be dismissed. 6.5 Students are eligible to take the qualifying examination provided they have completed at least 15 credits for required courses and maintained a G.P.A. of no less than The examination assesses the students knowledge of the areas related to their proposed dissertation topics. They must take this examination within 6 academic terms after their registration as a student. The students are given only 3 attempts to pass this examination, otherwise they will be dismissed.

2 6.6 Foreign language requirement Students must pass at least one of the foreign language tests, English or any other languages, approved by the department before registering for the dissertation defense. 6.7 Dissertation writing Students are eligible to register for the dissertation provided they have fulfilled the following requirements: 1. Having successfully passed the comprehensive and the qualifying examinations. 2. Having successfully completed at least 15 credits of required courses, and maintained a G.P.A. of no less than Having successfully passed the dissertation proposal defense 1 year after they had passed the comprehensive and the qualifying examinations Students can choose to write the dissertation in Thai or in English. The defense is conducted orally, and open to the interested public. 6.8 Term of study and course registration Students must take no more than 5 years or 10 academic terms to finish their study, starting from the registration date as students. In each semester, students must take at least 6 credits, and no more than 12 credits for the courses. For the summer session, the maximum number of credits they can take is Assessment and degree completion Assessment 1. There are 9 levels incorporated into the grading system from A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D to F. 2. Credits for a course will only be recognized with the grade of S (satisfactory), or B and higher. 3. The comprehensive, the qualifying, and the foreign language examinations will all use the same grading system of P (pass) and N (non-pass). 4. The dissertation will be assessed and graded as S (satisfactory), or U (unsatisfactory) 5. The required foundation course, LG 690 will be assessed and graded as P (pass) or N (non-pass) Degree completion Degree completion is based on the following conditions: 1. Having successfully completed all the courses as prescribed, and all the conditions set by the Faculty. 2. Having obtained a GPA of no less than Having passed the comprehensive examination (P). 4. Having passed the qualifying examination (P). 5. Having passed the foreign language examination (P). 6. Having passed the dissertation defense (S). 7. Having published some parts or a full version of the dissertation in a nationally or internationally recognized journal. 7. 3 7.3.2 Required courses are LG. 801, LG. 802, LG. 803, LG. 804, LG. 805, LG Elective courses are LG. 816, LG. 817, LG. 838, LG Dissertation: LG Course descriptions 8.1 Required foundation course LG. 690 Research Methods in Language Studies A study of the research methods in social and behavioral sciences with emphasis on linguistic research, including developing skills in choosing a research topic, designs for both qualitative and quantitative research, and using statistics for language analysis. The course focuses on primary or secondary data collection, research report writing, and referencing and practice of writing a mini thesis. 8.2 Required courses LG. 801 Topics in Phonetics and Phonology A study of phonetics principles as well as those of linear and non-linear approaches in phonological theories. Discuss the application of phonetics and phonology in research work, language teaching, communication and other related disciplines. LG. 802 Topics in Morphology and Syntax An advanced study of the principles and theories of morphology and syntax. Data analysis and discussion are based on the student s topics of interest, applicable to research, language teaching, communication, and other related disciplines. LG. 803 Topics in Semantics and Pragmatics A study of the principles and theories of semantics and pragmatics. Data analysis and discussion are based on the student s topics of interest, applicable to research, language teaching, communication, and other related disciplines. LG. 804 Topics in Discourse A study of the principles and theories of discourse for linguistic and applied linguistic analysis and research, applicable to research, language teaching, communication, and other related disciplines. LG. 805 Topics in Comparative and Historical Linguistics A study of the principles of historical linguistics, including the nature of language change, reconstruction of protolanguage and inner changes, glottochronology, lexicostatistics, and classification of language and language families. Concepts and techniques of comparative Tai linguistics, as well as language contact and grammaticalization in the Tai language family are also investigated. LG. 811 Topics in Applying Linguistics A study of the relationship between linguistics and the related fields to illustrate how to apply knowledge of linguistics in studying other areas of education and in using such knowledge in professional careers. Students are expected to have an ability to apply relevant concepts to their topics of interest. 8.3 Elective courses LG. 816 Advanced Directed Studies I A seminar course aimed at investigating advanced topics in linguistics and applied linguistics. Students are expected to create a new body of knowledge by discussing

4 chosen topics drawn from recent research in the field(s). LG. 817 Advanced Directed Studies II A continuous seminar course following the completion of LG LG. 838 Advanced Directed Studies in Applying Linguistics I A seminar course that examines Thai society from the perspective of applied linguistics. Proposed areas of enquiry will be put into practice, analyzed and critically evaluated. Students are also trained to assess the outcome of these procedures.
