NAME OF DEGREE Master of Science (Community Development) M.Sc. (Community Development) 3. OBJECTIVES 1. To generate graduates in community development field which can enable the development of human and society as well as the nation as a whole 2. To develop new body of knowledge that suits the working condition, particular those related to working systems, emphasizing learning process and network development 4. ACADEMIC SYSTEM 1. The program offers full time study, based on a dual semester system. There are two program options which the students may select according to their interesting as deemed appropriate. Plan A : Thesis Program - 30 credits course work (including 6 credits field practicum) - 12 credits thesis work - total 42 credits Plan B : Non thesis Program by taking some elective course - 39 credits course work (including 6 credit field practicum) - 3 credits mini-thesis work - total 42 credits 2. Comprehensive Examination and Thesis Requirements Comprehensive Examination and thesis requirements must be in accordance with the Academic Regulations for Master s Programs B.E. 2528/2985 and of the Standard Criteria of the Graduate Studies Courses of the Ministry of University Affairs 2.1 Comprehensive Examination Requirements Plan A : Students may take the comprehensive Examination - after completion of 30 credits, - They must earn a grade point average of 3.00 in all graduate work Plan B : Students may take the comprehensive examination after having completed all courses (42 credits) and will be allowed to take the examination in the first semester of the expected year of graduation 2.2 Thesis Registration Students may register for a thesis after passing the comprehensive examination and maintaining a grade point average (G.P.A) of not less than CURRICULUM 6.1 Total Requirements 57 Credits 6.2 Course Structure Plan A - Requirement courses = 7 (21 credits) - Selective course = 1 (3 credits) - Field practicum = 2 (6 credits) - Thesis = (12 credits)

ACADEMICD DURATION Students must complete in no less than 4 regular semesters and not more than 8 regular semesters of the dual semester system. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Requirement Courses CD611 Political Socio-Economic Analysis for Development in Thailand 3 credits Analyse the changes in Thai socio-economic and politics, global changes that affect the Thai society, problems and trends of changes leading to the local community development and society at all levels

3 CD612 Development and Community Development Theories 3 credits Study philosophy concepts on relationship between human and its surroundings, theories on community and community development, development impacts on community and society as well as sustainable development paradigms CD613 Strategies and Process of Community Development 3 credits Study development strategies, community development processes, techniques in joint actions between private, public and community sectors to analyse, plan, implement and evaluate the results on the basis of participation, empowerment and self reliance CD614 Policy and Planning in Community Development 3 credits Study policy formulation process, relations between policy and functions of various stakeholders, policy contexts, policy analysis and policy implementation. Programme and project planning and implementation is also included CD615 Community Development Management 3 credits Study concepts and principles in development management for organization development, strategy for improving organizational efficiency and coordination with other agencies CD616 Research Methodology in Development 3 credits Study quantitative and qualitative research methods, research design process, framework development, research implementation and research project management CD617 Development Seminar 3 credits Assess, synthesize and integrate theories, concepts related to community development in order to analyze the community development problems. This should lead to developing a new paradigm in development field Selective courses Students shall select one course from the following list (for Plan A) or 4 courses (for Plan B) or select one master degree level course offered by other departments and/or faculties in Thammasat University, given that it is approved by Head of Community Development Department. CD711 People Empowerment 3 credits Study steps and processes on empowerment general public and the vulnerable groups. Thus leading to development of their potentials and ability in organizing themselves to deal with the changing societal context CD712 Rights, Human Rights and Civil Society 3 credits Study theories, concepts and principles of rights in various dimensions and aspects, particularly those suited to Thai context. Right protection and acknowledgement at individual and collective levels issue will be addressed and propagating the equality and social responsibility CD713 Community Business 3 credits Study nature, characteristics and types and roles of community business in relation to promotion of quality of life. Analyse the factors hindering and supporting community business enterprises own by people, strategy of community sector to manage their business sustainably CD721 Community Dynamics 3 credits Study concepts, theories related to community components and types. Analyze the trends of community transformation, particularly on ways of life of people and interactions among them CD722 Local Self Governance 3 credits Study theories, concepts and principles of self governance and state governance. Roles and relations between the two level of governances, problems faced and alternatives to overcome those problems. Appropriate model of self governance in Thai context will be analyzed

4 CD731 Administrative Development in Organization 3 credits Study concepts and strategies in organizational system improvement to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the development organization. Different types of development agencies will be explored and analyzed CD732 Advanced Training Organization and Management in Development 3 credits Study concepts and theories related to communication, adult learning, capacity building, trainer qualification, and effective training system. Training project proposal development, management and evaluation issues will be elaborated CD733 Techniques in working with the people 3 credits Study principles goals and methods to work with people, groups and community. This also includes empowerment process and other techniques that can be applied for achieving higher goals of development organizations CD734 Advanced Research for Development Administration 3 credits Study various statistics, research design and methods. Ways to utilize research result for making policy, programme planning and projects improvement will be discussed CD735 Conflict Resolution 3 credits Study philosophy and concepts related values, beliefs and human behaviors and conflict management. Causes and effects derived from conflicts will be further explored as well as the bottleneck. Possible solutions for those conflicts will be discussed CD736 Communication for Development 3 credits Study theories and principles on communication for development, evolution of media used in socio-economic and political development CD741 Natural Resources Management 3 credits Study theories, concepts and methods in managing natural resources in integrated manner, through people participation process. This includes local indigenous knowledge on sustainable natural resource management CD742 Environment Management 3 credits Study urbanization model and process, industrialization process and technological development which affect environmental degradation. Concepts and principles in preventing and solving those problems as well as roles of related agencies and community will be discussed CD743 Cultural Resource Management in Community Development 3 credits Study concepts, theories, values and models on cultural resource management at various levels. Researches, processes on conservation, rehabilitation and promotion of cultural resources will be examined, including business management over cultural resources. Field Practicum CD699 Competence Development for Community Work 3 credits Assess community development concepts and principles from real life situations in communities. Trying to adapt theories into practice through learning by doing principle. CD799 Community Development Field Practice 3 credits Enhance skills from being exposed to one development agency. (For those who have experiences can substitute this course by registering one from the given selective courses (CD721 or CD733 or CD734), with consent from head of the department. Thesis CD800 Thesis 12 credits Writing a dissertation as prescribed in the thesis making rule

5 Mini-thesis CD700 Selected Topics in Community Development 3 credits Study one community development topic in-depth and submit a report 8. EDUCATIONAL EVALUATION AND ACHIEVEMENT Educational Evaluation 1. Educational Evaluation is divided into 8 grades with the designations and grade points per one credit as follows : Level A A- B+ B B- C+ C D F 2. An evaluation of some credit courses (CD699, CD799), grades S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) may be assigned. 3. For Thesis, grades S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory); a Thesis with grade S shall be considered as passing with credits. 4. An evaluation of some credit courses without credits is divided into 2 levels namely the P level (passing) and the N level (not passing) without a grade, for example :English Examination and Comprehensive Examination 5. The counting of the credits earned shall be made only for those of the courses in which the students earned the D or F level, either required or elective courses, shall be calculated as grade as grade point average for that semester and a cumulative grade point average at all times.
