2 STANDARD DIESEL ENGINE + DUAL FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM = INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR GENERATING 125 KW OF CLEAN ELECTRICITY FROM SYNGAS AND BIOGAS GAS MOTORS Gas Motors with spark ignition can operate solely on biogas and syngas. In practice, a small amount of petrol (gasoline) is often used to start the engine. What is not so good about them: It is common understanding that spark ignited gas engines don t have the same power density. It makes sense then that they will have a larger price tag for the equal power (bigger engine for the same rating). Spark ignited engines have a different cam timing than diesels so generally they will have higher exhaust gas temperatures. Combined high temperatures with the dry gas fuel causes significantly higher valve seat wear rates. Spark systems have come a long way in durability but they are far from maintenance free. Many engines have fairly short plug life and while there are plugs special built to last longer they are expensive. Spark ignited engines have limits to fuel content, temperatures and power capacity. 3 In order to generate electricity, biomass shall be converted to biogas or syngas by either gasification or biological digestion/fermentation, or converted to liquid fuels propelling a generator. Several research institutions and international agencies rate biomass as one of the cheapest available renewable energy sources for power generation. In most cases, biogas and syngas are used as fuel for combustion engines, which convert it to mechanical energy, powering an electric generator to produce electricity. Appropriate electric generators are available in virtually all countries and in all sizes. The technology is well known and maintenance is simple. Technologically far more challenging is the first stage of the generator set: the combustion engine using the biogas as fuel. Gas turbines are rarely used for small-scale applications in developing countries as they are expensive. Furthermore, due to their spinning at very high speeds and the high operating temperatures, the design and manufacturing of gas turbines is challenging and maintenance requires specific skills. External combustion engines have the advantage of being tolerant of fuel composition and quality. They are, however, relatively expensive and characterised by low efficiency. Their use is therefore limited to a number of very specific applications. Therefore Internal Combustion Motors are becoming the standard technology to produce electricity from biogas and syngas. BIOMASS AS ELECTRICITY SOURCE Energy is essential for human development. Without an adequate basic energy supply people cannot cook their food, light their homes or keep essential medication chilled. The provision of electricity from renewable energy sources can provide basic energy services for lighting and communication and promote local economic growth. Renewable energy from photovoltaics, wind turbines and small hydro plants is highly suitable for off-grid electricity supply and has been successfully introduced in countless cases in developing countries. Low cost compare to Gas Engine. Fuel flexibility, if syngas/biogas is interrupted full diesel (light oil, BTL, BDF) operation is available instantly while generating off-grid power. Full original power capacity. Diesel cam timing keeps exhaust cooler and provides better scavenging, contributes to higher power density and longer valve life. Higher compression ratio, better efficiency than spark ignition gas engines. Diesel ignition, this is a huge one. You will have very long service intervals with the ignition system (same as normal diesel injector service). Lean burn combustion capacity, far beyond any spark ignition system, contributes to reduced misfire, better efficiency, higher power density, reduced Nox emissions. Maintenance service intervals are longer than strait diesel not shorter like spark gas. Exhaust emissions are significantly reduced. Fail safe operation, if a problem exists with the gas system full diesel backup is instantly provided.
