2 I. PRIZE CATEGORIES CATEGORY 1 FEMALE SINGER OF THE YEAR Award recipient: Awarded to a female classical music singer for outstanding achievement. CATEGORY 2 MALE SINGER OF THE YEAR Award recipient: Awarded to a male classical music singer for outstanding achievement. CATEGORY 3 INSTRUMENTALIST Award recipient: Awarded to outstanding classical instrumentalists. The jury may award this prize to a maximum of five instrumentalists, whereby only one prize can be awarded for each instrument category. CATEGORY 4 CONDUCTOR OF THE YEAR Award recipient: Awarded to an outstanding classical music conductor. CATEGORY 5 ENSEMBLE/ORCHESTRA Award recipient: Awarded to outstanding classical ensembles/orchestras. In this category, the jury may award the prize to a total of up to three ensembles of different size and composition in this category. CATEGORY 6 NEWCOMER Award recipient: Awarded to outstanding young artists. The jury may award this prize to a maximum of five newcomers, whereby only one prize can be awarded for each field or instrument category. Rules of submission: The album should be a recording that has attained a particularly high profile for the prospective prize-winner for the first time on Germany's classical record market. CATEGORY 7 THE KLASSIK OHNE GRENZEN PRIZE (CLASSICAL WITHOUT BORDERS) Award recipient: This award can be awarded to artists, ensembles and composers, operetta recordings, musicals or film soundtracks. The jury may award up to three prizes. Rules of submission: Accepted in this category are music productions that build a bridge either to or from the classical genre. This bridge can be established either by the music or by the artists themselves, i.e. on the one hand, classical compositions performed in another music style or popular compositions that contain stylistic features of classical music; on the other hand, productions by classical artists that have been adopted in another music genre or popular artists who have released classical music recordings. CATEGORY 8 SYMPHONIC RECORDING Award recipient: This prize is awarded to the conductors and orchestras of three outstanding recordings and interpretations of symphonic works. The jury may award one prize in each of the following fields: 8A) Music up to and including the 18th century 8B) 19th century music 8C) 20th/21st century music CATEGORY 9 CONCERT RECORDING Award recipient: The prize is awarded collectively to a soloist, conductor and orchestra for the outstanding recording of concertos and works for orchestra. The jury may award one prize each for three different solo instruments in the fields of 9A) Music up to and including the 18th century, 9B) 19th century music 9C) 20th/21st century music. 2

3 CATEGORY 10 CHORAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR Award recipient: The award goes collectively if applicable to a soloist, conductor, choir and/or orchestra for the outstanding recording of a choral work (acapella music or music of choir and/or ensembles with instruments). CATEGORY 11 OPERA RECORDING Award recipient: This award goes collectively to a soloist, conductor and/or orchestra for outstanding opera productions. The jury may award one prize in each of the following fields: 11A) Opera up to and including 17th/18th century 11B) 19th century opera 11C) 20th/21st century opera. CATEGORY 12 SOLO RECORDING Award recipient: The Award for an outstanding solo recording goes to a soloist, regardless of field and instrument. The jury may award one prize in each of the following fields: A) Music up to and including 17th/18th century B) 19th century music C) 20th/21st century music CATEGORY 13 SOLO RECORDING/VOICE Award recipient: Award for outstanding interpretive performance by a singer. The jury may award one prize in each of the following fields: A) Duets/opera arias, B) Arias/recitals, C) Songs. CATEGORY 14 CHAMBER MUSIC RECORDING Award recipient: Award for an outstanding chamber music recording by an artist or ensemble. The jury may award one prize respectively for strings, wind and mixed chamber ensemble in each of the following fields: A) Music up to and including 17th/18th century B) 19th century music C) 20th/21st century music CATEGORY 15 OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN EDITING Award recipient: The prize for an outstanding achievement in editing goes to a record company/label. Divergence from the regular Rules of Submission: In this case, samples do not have to be submitted. CATEGORY 16 WORLD PREMIERE RECORDING OF THE YEAR Award recipient: The prize goes collectively if applicable to a soloist, conductor, orchestra and composer for a first-ever recording of a composition (from any time period) that makes available a work of classical music i.e. one that uses the stylistic devices of classical music for the first time on a sound carrier. CATEGORY 17 THE CLASSICS FOR CHILDREN AWARD Award recipient: The award goes collectively to a record label and the artists for an outstanding recording of classical music aimed at children and containing a child-friendly presentation that makes it particularly suited to introducing children to classical music. Divergence from the regular Rules of Submission: In this case, no reviews have to be submitted. CATEGORY 18 AUDIOPHILE MULTI-TRACK RECORDING OF THE YEAR Award recipient: The prize goes collectively to a record label and the sound engineer for the outstanding production of a classical music recording with four or more audio tracks, released on DVD Audio, SACD or Blu-ray. 3

4 CATEGORY 19 MUSIC DVD/BLU-RAY RECORDING Award recipient: The jury may honor up to three outstanding music DVD/Blu-ray productions in the field of classical music for different production types respectively (opera, concert, documentary, etc.). CATEGORY 20 FOSTERING YOUNG TALENT AWARD Award recipient: Award honoring the outstanding promotion of activities for children and teens in classical music or exceptional work introducing children to classical music. This prize is awarded to any natural or legal person or their proxies. Nominations may be submitted by any individual with knowledge of such a project. Thirteen copies of all press portfolios, videos and press articles must be sent to the BVMI by regular mail. Divergence from the regular Rules of Submission: In order to qualify, the submission must be accompanied by a written testimony justifying the candidate's suitability. There is no submission fee and no need to submit any reviews. CATEGORY 21 BESTSELLER OF THE YEAR Award recipient: The award goes to an artist or ensemble with the top-selling album of the year. Divergence from the regular Rules of Submission: This category does not accept submissions. The Bestseller of the Year is awarded solely on the full-price sales figures of a recording during the evaluation period, as measured by GfK Entertainment (including all retail partners covered in the rankings). Excluded from this category are classical crossover recordings and recordings of Christmas music (e.g. Christmas carols), which are only released for seasonal business and are hardly listened to or purchased outside of the Christmas season. This exclusion does not apply to works with a general repertory value, such as Bach s Christmas Oratorio, Handel s Messiah, Christmas cantatas, Christmas concerti grossi etc. CATEGORY 22 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Award recipient: The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the life's work of an artist whose oeuvre is of particular importance for the music scene. This award is not intended as a posthumous tribute. Divergence from the regular Rules of Submission: In order to qualify, the submission must be accompanied by a written testimony justifying the candidate's suitability. There is no submission fee, discs and reviews don t have to be submitted. II. RULES OF SUBMISSION AND EVALUATION Requirements for submission in the individual ECHO Klassik categories: submissions must be audio releases by one or several artists in the genre of classical music. Any doubts as to whether the recording fits the classical genre shall be settled based on its classification in the PHONONET database. In categories 1 to 5, works can also be submitted that were released exclusively as audiovisual media (DVD), provided the artist clearly played a leading role in the recording (no documentaries). All classical music artists who are actively involved in music and on the audio recording market on the date of submission regardless of their nationality are eligible to compete for the award. Eligibility to submit works: Any record company whose recordings are regularly distributed on the German market and who owns the distribution rights to the submitted artists recordings is eligible to submit them. Submitting an entry implies acknowledgement of the prize categories, rules of submission and award determination procedures. Submission period: February 22, March 11, 2016 (date as postmark). Any incomplete applications received within the submission period will not be considered. Submissions received after the closing date will also not be considered. No extensions will be granted. 4

5 Submission: Submissions for the ECHO Klassik must be made via the online submission system found at this link: Each submission consists of three parts: the completed online submission, two reviews and 13 CDs/DVDs. There is no limit to the number of submissions a company can make. In addition, each submission can be submitted to any number of categories. Evaluation period: Any new classical music release dated between January 1, 2015 and March 11, 2016 qualifies for the submission process (this rule does not apply to categories 20 and 22). The albums must contain recordings that were first released during the evaluation period. These recordings must account for at least 50% of the total playing time of the disc. Recordings submitted in the previous year may not be re-submitted. Reviews: In order to qualify for consideration, two outstanding, independent reviews by music journalists (this rule does not apply to categories 17, 20 and 22) must be submitted. These reviews must accompany each submitted recording and be made available on the online submission system. CD/DVDs: In order to qualify for consideration, 13 copies of the CD/DVD must be submitted regardless of how many categories it is entered in. This rule does not apply to categories 15, 20 and 22. The protective cover must have been removed and each of the CD/DVDs submitted must have a clearly visible label indicating the corresponding category/categories (including the field, if applicable) in which the product is being submitted for consideration. Any CD/DVDs that are unmarked or still encased in their protective cover will not be considered. Fees: A one-off fee of EUR (incl. VAT) will be charged for each product submitted. No additional costs are incurred if a recording is submitted for consideration in multiple categories. The fee must be paid to the BVMI s account at the latest by 30 days following receipt of the invoice. Submissions for which the fees are not paid on time will not be considered.
