1 creating change that works the center for employment opportunities
2 Men and women with criminal records want to turn their lives around. CEO began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following their release. In 1996, CEO became an independent, nonprofit organization and continues to focus exclusively on addressing employment needs of individuals recently released from incarceration. The CEO model has been proven, through a rigorous, random evaluation, to reduce recidivism, improve public safety and save money, allowing dollars to be reinvested back into communities. CEO currently has 10 offices nationally and has helped placed over 17,000 formerly incarcerated individuals into full-time employment. An independent evaluation of CEO found that the program generated up to $3.85 in taxpayer savings for every $1 spent. CEO 2 CEO 3

6 JOB READINESS TRAINING transitional job training The class prepares individuals, many of whom have never held a full-time job or have been disconnected from the job market for an extended period of time, to enter the workforce. In interactive sessions, participants learn best practices in filling out job applications, building a resume and answering questions about their convictions with potential employers. In addition, the class helps the participants obtain all necessary work identification documents. All Job Readiness Training graduates are eligible to be employed on CEO s Transitional Work Sites. CEO participants are under the direction of our own site supervisors, and are evaluated daily in a Passport to Success booklet on the behaviors that employers say they value most: showing up on time, taking direction from a supervisor, working hard, being good co-workers and showing good communication skills. At the end of each full-day shift, CEO puts a paycheck in the hand of each participant. CEO 10 CEO 11
