1 BOOK OFF: GREENAWAY EDITION INSTRUCTIONS Aim: To fuel enthusiasm and engagement Duration: 10 sessions (completed weekly) As in the TV show The Great British Bake Off, the shadowers face-off in 3 challenges per meeting to be declared Star Reader. Session 1: We have created a quick presentation that explains how the game will work and sets the children off on their first challenge: taste-testing the books. The structure of sessions 2-9: Each time the children meet, the shadowers are given a recipe card that contains three challenges. Technical Challenge: To start the session, the group leader should read either the whole book, or an excerpt. The shadowers keep their recipe card that lists the ingredients of the book close by. The shadowers are then given 3 minutes to identify as many ingredients as possible within the first chapter. The shadower who finds the most ingredients wins this challenge. This activity is completed weekly. : This challenge helps the shadowers explore the book further. The shadowers are given 10 minutes to complete the challenge, which is listed on each recipe card. Challenge: Each week the shadowers log on to the shadowing website and post their very best review. They should take into consideration what they learned from the first two challenges. Finally, the group leader reads over all the reviews and considers the shadowers performance in all three challenges. The group leader then selects a Star Review of the week and highlights this on the shadowing website. Session 10: : During the final session have your shadowers vote for their favourite book and change your barometer on the shadowing site to reflect this. The group leader can also announce who has won Star Reader overall for the competition.

What are the most important things in it? Add colour to just those things. Sketches Watercolours used here and there Stories with unexpected endings Pick one of the characters whose story doesn t have an end and draw a picture of how it could end. For example, do they ever rebuild the bridge? Who helps? Draw a picture that shows what you think of this book. How many differences can you fi nd? Bonus question: what do you think happened at the end of the story? Are they in the same place as where they started? If so why does the house look different? Did they dig to the other side of the earth? To an alternate reality? Was it all a dream? Write a one sentence review. What are your favourite stories? Make a list of at least 3 books. Then draw a picture of the outside of your school and hide your favourite books in the picture. Write a two paragraph review. Start your first paragraph with: This book makes me think of the story. and explain why it makes you think of the story you chose. Can you think of a different way of getting him out of the chair? Write down your idea and give it to your teacher. Write a three paragraph review. Start one paragraph with: What s great about There s a Bear on my Chair is. start the second paragraph with, The ending of this book. Start the third paragraph that starts with, When I compare this book to the other books I have read so far, I would rate it and then explain why. Pick a different fairy tale character you would like to see in this story and draw a picture of how he/she might get into the castle. Does Rapunzel use her hair to climb over the wall? Does the Big Bad Wolf huff and puff and blow the roses and thorns away? Write your very best review.
