1 The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 set out first-aid provision in the work place and require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and qualified first-aid personnel. Governors and Headteachers should ensure that school staff are appropriately trained and that there is adequate first aid provision. Staff should have relevant training and ensure that it is kept up to date. Most schools will have first-aid arrangements in place but it is strongly recommended that all schools should develop their own first-aid policies and procedures based on as assessment of local need. Schools will need to assess numbers first-aid personnel, equipment, accommodation, recording and reporting arrangements. All staff must be informed of the first-aid arrangements the location of equipment, facilities; first aid personnel and the procedures for monitoring and reviewing the school s first aid needs. West Berkshire do not provide first aid training for schools. Schools have to contact the training providers for booking information and availability. See Intranet link for detail: This assessment form has been designed to assess first aid needs for the whole school and all activities. The Responsible Person must ensure that they (or the person they delegate to) have received training and guidance before completing this assessment. Where large and/or complex sites are involved, or personnel are working away from their school base, further more detailed risk assessment will be required. 2 Assessment of school: The following list identifies areas in school that are considered higher risk. Delete those areas that are not relevant to this school. Further assessment of higher risk areas may be necessary to ensure adequate first aid cover. For example, hazardous substances, dangerous tools and machinery. Temporary hazards, such as building or maintenance work, should also be considered and suitable short-term measures put in place.

3 Assessment of First Aid Personnel required: When considering how many first-aid personnel are required the governing body or headteacher should also consider: Adequate provision for lunch times and breaks. It is good practice to encourage lunchtime supervisors to undergo first-aid training. Adequate provision for leave and in case of absences. First-aid provision for off-site activities, e.g. educational visits. Adequate provision for practical areas such as science, technology, food technology and physical-education departments. Provision for out-of-school-hours activities, e.g. sports and clubs. Agreements with contractors (e.g. school meals providers) on joint first-aid provision for their employees. Provision for trainees working on-site. They have the same status as staff for health and safety purposes Agreed procedures for emergencies in isolated areas, e.g. on the playing field. Are buildings on the site spread out or is it a multi-floor building? No except for Mezzanine level Consider provision in each building or on several floors.

Has someone been appointed to ensure that first aid kits are adequately stocked and expired items removed? State Ensure the container is identified by a white cross on a green background. Remove items or items with broken seals as they may no longer be sterile or otherwise safe to use. Personal Protective Equipment and Disposal of Clinical Waste such as Bodily Fluids: Aspect Requiring Consideration State Is appropriate personal protective equipment available for employees who may be exposed to biological hazards e.g. disposable gloves and aprons? Both first-aiders and injured persons may be at risk from infection from each other. Clean-up kits should be provided for the safe removal and disposal of blood, vomit and other bodily waste.
