1 Year 1 - Parents' Briefing September 2016

2 Aims: To let you know what targets your child will be working on this year in the core subjects of Maths and English (Writing, Reading + SPAG). To give you ideas and support on how to help your child with these at home. To give you an insight to how challenging the new National Curriculum are now!

3 We will be doing phonics daily with all the children - What they are - How they are broken down - Screening test - Assessment - Spellings

4 English = 44 different sounds (this does not include same sounds, different spellings Most other countries = max 23

5 - How to pronounce sounds online support - Screening test examples online

6 Spellings Weekly spellings - I will give 10 a week but children only tested on 5 - Tested in any order - First 3 weeks of spellings are only for practice and wont be recorded - this is so children and parents can get used to it.

7 Firstly I am going to show you all the age related objectives for this year group. These are the National Curriculum expectations for children of this age.

8 We have selected 7 Maths targets for your child this year. We have picked very important ones for your child, but also ones that we feel you can support your child with at home.

9 We will breifly go through each one. Give out handouts if necessary for parents.

10 The target walls will be highlighted at the end of each half term to let you know how your child has done. We will also be discussing them at Parents' Evenings in the Spring and Summer. They will be stuck in either their Homework Book or Reading Record for the year so you have access to them.

11 Mastery Maths A description of what it is... The Government has introduced a new approach to teaching called the 'Mastery Approach.' Watch this short video: page/issues landing page/using mastery in maths 2 The National Curriculum now places far more emphasis on children being able to apply their understanding in Maths across areas of learning rather than on pushing children to understand mathematical learning above their age related expectation. Assessment in Maths now focuses on depth of learning and ability to apply learning in a range of contexts. End of Key Stage Assessments now focus on children working at Age Related Expectation (ARE) with more able children working at 'Greater Depth' rather than a higher level. (Levels have gone!) A Maths lesson will now be characterised by the majority of children all starting on the same Maths objectives at Age Related Expectation. Children who are struggling will have more time and support to achieve while confident children will be challenged to apply what they have learnt to solve more complex problems and problems in a related area of Maths as opposed to moving on to the next higher level of Maths from the subsequent years' learning objectives. Children are being encouraged to learn far more independently. They choose what Maths to apply to solve problems and learn as much from mistakes as they do from successes. They learn at their own pace be that having time to repeat and embed learning or moving through increasingly complex problems to take on what we call 'stinker' questions which require application and reasoning at Greater Depth. Our more able and confident mathematicians are encouraged to take these questions on and prove through reasoning how they can solve them. There is always a stinker question to have a go at, there is always the next level of challenge. Assessment and teaching in Maths focuses more on children's ability to reason about and explain their Maths rather than simply answering questions. This 'reasoning' is the focus of two thirds of the end of key stage assessments (SATs). Children in Key Stage 1 will sit 1 reasoning and 1 arithmetic test. Key Stage 2 will sit 2 reasoning tests and one arithmetic.

13 Now I am going to show you all the age related objectives for this year group. These are the National Curriculum expectations for children of this age.

14 KS1 - Reading Incentive How high can you go? This year we are challenging children in KS1 to read 'higher' than anyone else! Each time they read a book, it will get added to their own personal tower of books. For every 5 books they read, they will get a Golden Ticket, and then, at the end of the half term, will be rewarded further if they have met the 10, 15 or 20 marker. They can then take their towers home to display proudly and start the challenge again.

16 KS1 - Lotto Boards KS1 Lotto Boards are continuing but we are changing the words we focus on to be in line with the new, more challenging National Curriculum Expectations. There will be 22 boards instead of 82. They are focused on the Common Exception Words for KS1. (These are words that often cannot be sounded out phonetically.) In Year 1 and 2 all children will start on a lotto board at their level. In order to move up they need to read AND spell the words on there. We would like to try reading and spelling alongside each other as we feel this will have an impact on both their reading and writing simultaneously. (Reception will start in the Spring.) The new system will start this week. Thank you for all your continued support with Lotto Boards, they really do help!
