2 OERVIEW OF URBAN WATER SUPPLY & SEWERAGE IN VIETNAM Urban Areas in Vietnam: By the end of 2013: Vietnam has 765 urban areas Special urban areas including Hanoi & HCMC - - Central cities are categories I: Provincial cities are categories II: Urban areas catagories III: Urban areas catagories IV : Urban areas catagories V : 627 2

3 Population Forecast: By 2020, the urban population will reach 44 million people (45% of the total population nationwide) By 2025 the urban population will reach 52 million people (50% of the total population nationwide Urban water supply systems: Currently, Vietnam has 400 centralized water supply systems with the total capacity : 6,5.106 m3/day. The coverage has increased from 60% (in the early 90s of the 20th century) to nearly 80%. In Ho Chi Minh City, the total capacity of water supply currently is 1, m3/day with the percentage of clean water access is 89%. By the end of 2014, the total design capacity of water supply : 1, m3 /day By the end of 2015: 2, m3 /day. 3

4 Urban Drainage Systems: - By the end of 2013, Vietnam has 20 centralized wastewater treatment plants operating regularly and more than 40 plants under construction or in process for transfer. - Urban wastewater is treated approximately 10% of the wastewater estimated 650,000 m3/day - Sewerage and wastewater treatment services for urban residents, has been improved considerably: 90% of households use septic tanks as wastewater treatment works in place, 60% of households have used urban drainage system. - Wastewater treatment plants with large capacity was built in special urban areas catagories I and catagories II 4

5 Progress of Technology: - Water supply companies have approached and applied the advanced scientific technologies. Typically, water supply companies such as: Hai Phong, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Vinh Long, Da Nang, Sawaco, Hai Duong, Hue use new flocculation, two layer filter tank, filtration, biological filter tank for water pretreatment of organic contamination. - Wastewater treatment: Applying the activated sludge technology SBR, A20 technology to remove N, P, mương oxy hóa OD, waste water treatment technology with low-cost such as chain of biological lakes 5

6 - Application of information technology in management: The partitioning solution is widely applied, separating the management of water distribution, installing cubic metric system and modern measuring equipment, using information technology and the geographic information systems GIS and SCADA within the management network - controlling water losses, and actually reducing water loss from 30% to 26.5%. - Application of construction techniques and advanced equipments: New measures in construction and installation, the replacement of pipes (drilled the underground pipe), maintenance, clearing pipelines to improve water quality and move towards a safe water supply - Reusing water and sludge after urban wastewater treatment: Wastewater treated by the factory has been used to irrigate the plants, sludge from wastewater treatment plants has been processed into organic fertilisers... 6

7 In small provinces and urbans, especially in highly populated urban areas, many biogas trenchs have been built, combined disposal, garbage created gas to serve for daily life and livestock Developing technology, producing specialized materials : Vietnam has produced a range of products which meet the quality standard and similar to those from the developed countries. Currently, capacity of production meet about 80% of the domestic demands. Some major and leading enterprises in this field like: Tien Phong Plastic, Binh Minh, Dat Hoa, Minh Hoa 7

8 DEVELOPMENT ORIENTATION OF DRAINAGE SYSTEMS IN URBAN AREAS & INDUSTRIAL ZONES IN VIETNAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES BY 2020 Rainwater drainage: -Remove the flooding in the urban areas catagories IV or more. - Expanding the serving scope of the drainage system up to 80 % Wastewater drainage: - Urban areas catagories III or more will have network of collection and wastewater treatment plants, upgrading the ratio of wastewater treated as standard by 60 %. - Urban areas catagories IV, V and craft villages : 40 % of wastewater treated which reach the standard. - The constructions of surface wastewater, culverts, trenchs in the crowded residents are is regulated not to pollute the environment. 8

9 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES BY 2025 Rainwater drainage : - Remove the flooding in the urban areas - Expanding the serving scope of the drainage system from 90-95%, and the urban areas catagories reach 100% Wastewater drainage : - Urban areas catagories IV or more will have network of collection and wastewater treatment plants, the ratio of wastewater treated meet the standard from %. - Urban areas catagories V: 50 % of wastewater treated will reach the standard. - Reusing 20-30% wastewater for irrigation needs, street cleaning and other needs in urban and industrial zones.

10 CHALLENGES: - Although wastewater is connected to the drainage system, but only 10% of wastewater is treated - Many households use septic tanks, but the management of faecal sludge is still weak. - Pollution in the urban environment and water scarcity in the highlands worsened. - The challenge is increased due to urbanization and industrialization process, climate change, impacts and implications of the economic recessions in the country,... make growing pressure for supply sector drainage. 10

11 SOLUTIONS: - Continue to reduce the rate of water loss, improve service quality, water supply safety towards sustainability. - Overcoming backwardness, degradation of water works and drainage equipments. - Towards the guarantee cover investment costs and operation and maintenance, to minimize adverse impacts on the environment, create jobs and generate valuable industrial products, sync services which is capable of integration and competitiveness in the region and the world. 11

12 CONCLUSION: With the role as a bridge, bringing together members of the business and economic sectors operating in the water supply and sewerage in Vietnam. Over the past 25 years, VWSA has maintained and developed the strength of branches, co-operated effectively with experts, Universities, Institutes, Organization of science and technology or other associations from other countries to research and apply new technology to make water materials become more diversified and advanced and improving the quality of basic services to meet growth development of urban areas, industrial zones, contributing to the modernization of the country, creating confidence in the community and towards sustainable development. 12
