2 Flow regulation Overloading in sewerage works and drainage systems can be avoided by using an attenuation reservoir, or by directing flow to a less sensitive area. Automatic flow control in gravity fed drainage systems to minimise the risk of overloading. Autonomous - flow is regulated by the dimensioned capacity of the outlet. Minimal risk of obstructions - in normal situations the pipe is completely open for free flow. WaReg requires only minimal level differences, making the system easy to install, even in existing pipes. Uncomplicated and easily maintained construction which requires only a minimum level of maintenance. Precise flow through gravity fed systems regardless of retained water levels. Flow regulation in sewage and storm water systems An even flow is achieved by regulating the flow through the use of an attenuation reservoir. Flow regulating is used to delay inflow of surface water to minimize the risk of temporary overloading. This can be achieved by regulating surface/storm water inflow by using an attenuation reservoir, or a natural reservoir such as open land, ditches or even streets. Flow regulation in open water courses Pollution released in lakes and water courses can be minimised by regulating the removal of water through swamps, irrigation fields, irrigation dams and other natural filters. Flow can be easily and precisely regulated irrespective of upstream retained water levels using the WaReg flow regulating technique. Flooding in sensitive areas can be avoided by directing potential flood waters to less sensitive areas.

3 Flow regulation from an attenuation reservoir WaReg flow regulator optimises the use of an attenuation reservoir. This allows the minimum reservoir volume and promotes effective usage of the reservoir. Run-off outflow is not determined by the height of delivery (head). This means that during periods of low or normal levels of flow, retained water levels are maintained. The reservoir empties when there is adequate capacity in the outlet water pipe, allowing maximum usage of the system without increased risk of overloading the downstream pipes. Less input from other sources into the main system means faster emptying. Outflow is reduced in cases of large inputs from other sources. Flow through the well is not affected by upstream head pressure. This allows the reservoir to be placed in areas that were previously undesirable. The WaReg can be designed according to requirements. Directing surface water away from new industrial areas Newly built industrial areas surrounded by hard surfaces create higher flow rates during heavy rain. The existing storm water systems to which the new area to is be connected, often will not be able to cope with the peak flow rates without regulation. To even out the flow an open dam can be created to receive storm water from the area. Outflow can then be regulated with WaReg to help the existing storm water system cope with the additional water. Directing surface water away from new industrial areas Existing waste water systems with large amount of extraneous surface water tend to overload during periods of high rainfall. To prevent basement flooding a WaReg can be installed in the waste water pipes allowing excess waste water to be directed to a new reservoir during heavy rain periods. When the flow reduces the reservoir empties into the waste water pipes at a rate suitable to the existing pipes.

4 WaReg Function Using Wapro s flow regulating system, flow is controlled with the assistance of the current retained water levels in the pipe system. The principle is that the throughput area in the pipe is regulated by the water level in the chamber. In normal use the entire pipe is open, allowing the well to act as a normal manhole. In cases of increased flow the inlet is gradually closed to decrease the inflow into the well. The flotation pipe and sliding valves construction and action allows the flow to continue controlled through the WaReg. The well is constructed to minimise the risk for pollution, sludge and other matter from interrupting the flow Water flows through the chamber, without hindrance, when the WaReg is running under normal operating conditions. The downstream pipes have capacity for the current flow without risk for back-pressure. The whole area of the control pipe is open for flow. WaReg Standard Range 2 When back pressure increases the chamber fills with water causing the flotation regulation pipe to rise thereby reducing flow. When backpressure eases the water level decreases opening the outlet gradually until the entire pipe is once again open for flow. If the conditions change the flow can be adjusted within bounds after installation. Larger flow regulation wells can be manufacturer according to demand.

5 Installation Examples Attenuation Tank 1 Treatment Plant 2 Industrial Area Attenuation Tank Lake WaReg controls the flow into a purifying plant. During periods of heavy rain excess water is directed to an attenuation reservoir. When flow returns to normal levels the reservoir is emptied. 2 WaReg is placed in a storm water pipe to protect downstream properties from basement flooding during heavy rain periods. A by-pass pipe can be installed to direct the water past the risk areas into a reservoir. 3 WaReg can regulate water exiting an open dam and can even function as a compensation tank during heavy rain. During these periods water is collected in the basin to then be released when there is available capacity. Water can be delayed when the flow is slower to allow nitrogen dioxide assimilation. 4 Large quantities of water flowing during heavy rain from an industrial area can be collected in a closed reservoir. WaReg controls the flow into the reservoir to avoid backpressure in the downstream pipes. This effectively stops basement flooding in lower level properties.
