2 WIDA Proficiency Level 1 Entering Assessment The above task accurately and appropriately assesses a third grade ELL at the WIDA English Language Proficiency Level 1 Entering for the lesson s stated objective of being able to identify and compare the characteristic life cycle stages of a butterfly. This objective correlates to the New Jersey Science Standard SCI D.I., which states the same as the lesson s objective. It also correlates to the New Jersey Model Curriculum for Language Arts Common Core grade level and anchor standards, RL.3.1, RL.3.4, and RL 3.6, which indicate that an ELL at Level 1 is able to answer questions about grade level informational text with single words or phrases, determine the meaning of subject area specific words, and accurately use domain specific words in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This assessment also correlates to the WIDA Can Do Descriptors for this grade level and proficiency level 1 in the reading and writing domains, which states that an ELL at this stage can label objects, pictures, or diagrams from word/phrase banks.

4 WIDA Proficiency Level 3 Developing Assessment The above task accurately and appropriately assesses a third grade ELL at the WIDA English Language Proficiency Level 3 Developing for the lesson s stated objective of being able to identify and compare the characteristic life cycle stages of a butterfly. This objective correlates to the New Jersey Science Standard SCI D.I., which states the same as the lesson s objective. It also correlates to the New Jersey Model Curriculum for Language Arts Common Core grade level and anchor standards, RL.3.1, RL.3.4, and RL 3.6, which indicate that an ELL at Level 3 is able to answer questions about grade level informational text with simple sentences containing content based vocabulary, determine the meaning of subject area specific words, and accurately use domain specific words in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This assessment also correlates to the WIDA Can Do Descriptors for this grade level and proficiency level 3 in the reading and writing domains, which states that an ELL at this stage can produce simple expository text, string related sentences together describe events, people, processes, and procedures.

This assessment also correlates to the WIDA Can Do Descriptors for this grade level and proficiency level 5 which indicates that related to specialized or technical language in a content are, an ELL can produce oral or written language approaching comparability to that of English-proficient peers when presented with grade-level material.
